Win7 / 8.1 / 10? Have you checked the Windows System Event Log?

Any specific apps or activities which trigger black screens or system hangs?

    Installed any new hardware recently?

The Quadro P4000 is doable only if your machine is equipped with the IPS screen (This is a very rare configuration)
Your best option is either a Quadro M5000M or Geforce GTX 980M and make sure to get the Dell or Alienware version with the X-Bracket installed.
If your machine has an AMD GPU installed, you will also need to purchase and install the Nvidia version of the heatsink.

The Quadro P4000 does not run well (no brightness control I suppose, like with the P5000) on the RGB lcd from factory, it work with the LVDS one (with optimus enabled) or with an eDP one (3D lcd or "custom" one).
The easier upgrade would be GTX965M, GTX970M, GTX980M, M4000M or M5000M, but all of these card need to replace the gpu cooling since you have an AMD gpu cooling

Honestly, easiest way to get the Nvidia X-Bracket for your laptop is to buy a cheap Dell Quadro card from eBay that has the bracket included.
Cheapest ones are usually the Quadro 1000m, and K1000M

Hi I got a 980m for a very good deal off eb and I have a few questions. I've searched through this and other threads online but it's pretty nebulous, bits and pieces of useful info, so bare with me if you've heard these questions before.

    -3940xm cpu
    -win7x64
-unlocked vbios from techinferno, sl7, for the k4000m, 980mhz core, 2128mhz mem
    -LVDS stock screen
-I have an oc'd k4000m in here atm and it is oc'd up 60% so 680m/870m performance according to firestrike grapics score 4500-4621(non-oc for me was 2820) and some game benchmarks I've seen in yt videos. Not sure how much more watts that is pumping out, rated at 100w max.
-using an xbracket off an old quadro 1000m I pulled off so no worries there.

    1. the 980m is the clevo edition, since I'm putting this in my m6700 will it need an inf mod and or a vbios flash? I'm using windows 7x64. I've heard that the nv drivers from 390xx-418xx won't need an inf mod? Anyone with info on this? I don't care if it doesn't recognize it's name etc as long as I get correct synthetic benchmark scores I'm fine. And normal temps like 80c or below. I'm fine turning it down to 900p or 768p in newer games.

2.According to the pics of the card on the way the vbios is 84.04.22.00.12 which comes up on the techpowerup vbios 980m listing as for clevo/nvidia/msi so I'm assuming it won't need a vbios flash?

    3. Will the stock heatsink I've got, which is a 3 pipe, work without modding it? The cpu has 2 heatpipes for the xm. All stock. I don't plan on oc for the 980m, stock would be just fine for my gaming needs. Will the heights be ok, adding thermal pads here and there as needed, have plenty from other cards not used.

    4. The 980m is rated in different places as 100w up to 125w to my k4000m stock 100w, would it be ok without custom fan profiles like using hwinfo? I've got some arctic silver 5 on order for this job.

    1. There was a range of NVIDIA drivers that did not need an INF mod. The newest ones do need an INF mod. I have directions for Quadro INF mod here. I've never done a mod for GeForce but the idea is similar. Basically you need to find another GeForce 980M entry in the INF file and change its hardware ID to match what shows up in your system. You might also be able to use a Quadro M5000M entry (as I have described) and have it work fine, since the cards are basically the same.

    2. No vBIOS swap should be needed, generally we only see that required for cards sourced from HP systems.

    3. AFAIK there are not really different GPU heatsinks available to worry about. There is a difference for AMD vs NVIDIA cards but it is simply in the part that touches the GPU die (AMD chips of the era were smaller than NVIDIA ones), they are all three pipes. If you are replacing K4000M with M5000M then you can use the same heatsink. You will just need to pay attention to the extra VRM on the Maxwell card and make sure that it is covered with a thermal pad.

    4. No need to mess with the fan profiles. I have not been able to get my M5000M to thermal throttle (it hits the power limit first) and I imagine that it will be the same for the 980M.

-Hey thanks for the reply, good I was most worried about the vbios flashing it was nerve wracking for me to do the k4000m, first time doing that. Well worth the huge increase though.

-I'm fine searching for the older drivers, found the 418.81 win7x64 already but also have the 391.35. I use the geforce drivers on my k4000m, currently at the latest 425.31 so I keep them on my external drive catalog. Thanks for the link to your .inf guide so if I have to seems doable, but will def just try older drivers first.

-Yeah idk I've read some people have to mod the stock k4000m m6700 heatsink when going to an m5000m but maybe they were mistaken. From what I see the m5000m is physically the same as the 980m I'm putting in, so have to double check it when I get it.[/QUOTE]

If your Clevo GTX 980M came with the X-Bracket installed, you will need to carefully remove that one from the card. The heatsink screws used in Clevo systems are not the same size as Dell.
You will need to either remove and use the bracket from your Quadro card, or buy a very cheap Dell Quadro 1000M that includes the bracket (So you don't risk damaging your old card)

All Dell Nvidia MXM cards use the same bracket.
