OK, i am getting mad, yesterday i came late from work and followed steps, my hardware id is PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_053F1028, replaced the 4 lines with this but everything installs but can not get it working. I was tired and i can't remember what i did i get an old version and rebooted and was working, but brilliant myself wanted the newer one and i ended removing what was working...

Today i tried every steps but it ends in the same stuff can't get working properly, on many of the trials i have been doing suddenly the GTX 980M, changed to M5000M, but still not working. I have downloaded even some drivers that are with mod but still no luck

Keep in mind self modded drivers must be installed in Windows 10 while booted in driver signature check disabled mode!

It's possible that my mod won't work (but I'm pretty sure I've had other people have their 980M show up as M5000M and work properly with a mod like this). You'll have to find a GeForce 980M entry in an INF file somewhere and swap the hardware ID for it to match yours. Since I've only done this with Quadro, I cannot point to a specific one for you to use.

Alternatively, pull some older drivers from NVIDIA's web site. Drivers in the 390.xx-417.xx range should install without any mod needed.

When i did the one who worked i installed a 418.81 who was the first on the drivers page in this year but now if i install this again with or without mod it won't work as soon it reboots.
Tried even with olders 353 modded and no luck too, i remember before reinstalling Windows, on updates it tried to install but gave me errors like force installation and so, but now it doesn't do that.

I have tried disconecting wifi, running as admin and all possible ways are mentioned on forums express and custom too and no luck.

I wonder if in some way i have broken it

Did you try to completely get rid of former driver installations using DDU in Windows Protected mode? Version 418.81 is working absolutely fine for my 980M in the M6700 even after some test installations of newer versions.

Man this sucks 2 days trying to install drivers and no luck, i am giving up worst i can't return this gpu as seller doesn't accept returns, incredible it worked once i can't remember what i did and ended screwed it up very bad, is not defective it is being detected by BIOS and from device manager, but is like it somehow locked. Tried all methods even the ones from device manager, it install drivers but doesn't bring anything.

Wondering if this card could be fake... as i have read seems modding gpu codes is easy, this id doesn't bring up anything on google, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_053F1028&REV_A1

Okay, so first you need to extract the driver and find a file named "nvdmi.inf" in the Display.driver folder, then you need to find an entry for your GPU, here the GTX980M is "named" 13D7, so at first you will find something like that :
You need to modificate either "05AB" or "0685" or "0688" or "0708" or "0709" line, for example I modded the "05AB" line, you only need to modificate the end of the line with the "053F" (053F mean the "optimus enabled" Dell M6700 and 153F mean the "optimus disabled" or vice versa for what I understand), like shown below :
In your case you will also find another "group" of 13D7 line and you need to modify only the "same" line as before and that's it, the drivers should work.

Also1 you should disable optimus because it's a pain in the ass to make it work fine in my experience
Also2 if it doesn't work by modifying the "05AB" line you can try the other
Also3 if your id doesn't match on google it's because of the "053F" part which is specific for the Dell M6700 and since very few people got this combo you find nothing

Ah, well that's just bad luck. So, shorter screws would have been preferred.

I got a spare mainboard off ebay (I guess used ones) and replaced it and the laptop display turned on finally. Not sure what dies exactly on the mainboard, I've read some mention of a disk controller?

It was actually much less hassle than I expected. It's only a few more easy steps after taking off the heatsinks and the GPU which I already did before many times.
