You had a similar issue? I bought a used one from ebay so hope it fixes the problem (and that it's in better condition than mine). I'll try to swap it in a few days.

So I received the GTX 980m, installed it with no problems, just had to remove the x bracket and fine but... Drivers refuse to install... Device manager shows it as GTX 980M but trying to install it just give me an error that drivers are not compatible with the OS? Windows keeps popping up a force installation stuff and GTX 980M was installed correctly reboot and stuff but of I reboot appears the image I attached...

Weird stuff that in BIOS setup is showing up as unknown video card 8192mb contrary the k4100m which was not displayed, just the Intel HD 4000.

Did you do an INF mod? It is necessary to install drivers for any NVIDIA cards in this system, other than the Kepler Quadros that initially shipped with it. (There was a period of time earlier this year when NVIDIA had the INF file set up to take any GeForce 980M card without a mod needed, but they have since "fixed" that.)

    I recommend:
    * Find your card's hardware ID in device manager. It is on the details tab. It should look like this. PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13F8&SUBSYS_153F1028
    * Download the drive package from NVIDIA's web site and extract it.
    * Find the file nvdmwi.inf, open it in your favorite text editor.
    * Find the value VEN_10DE&DEV_13F8&SUBSYS_06DA1028 and replace it with your card's hardware ID in the same format. In my case with Quadro M5000M, I replace it with VEN_10DE&DEV_13F8&SUBSYS_153F1028, which is the value that I see for my card in Device Manager. (Note, there will be multiple occurrences in the file. Do all of them.) This is replacing the stock hardware ID for the Quadro M5000M in the Precision 7710, which is similar enough to the GeForce 980M that it should be fine.
** This is if you are running with Optimus ON. If you have Optimus OFF, you want to find VEN_10DE&DEV_13F8&SUBSYS_16DA1028 and replace it with your card's hardware ID.
    * Now you need to install the driver. However, because a modification is made, the signature is broken and Windows will not accept it. You need to boot Windows with Disable driver signature enforcement or with test mode enabled to install the driver. (Google directions if you need them.) You can boot normally after the driver is installed.
Alternatively, you can sign the driver yourself.

You can turn Optimus on or off in the BIOS. Select which ID to replace based on what you have set in the BIOS. And yes, it will be necessary to do this for each driver release. On my part I have created a script that I run after extracting the driver file that automatically handles everything.
