I don't remove the battery. I carefully unplug the lead from the battery to the circuit board using needle nose pliers and refit the lead with the pliers after a few seconds.

All you need to do is disconnect the small cable going from the battery to the system board. You can use needle-nose pliers as mentioned. When I had to do this I took the tip of a pocketknife and used that to gently fiddle the connector loose.

I understand. I have literally been pulling at the thing for an hour with pliers, but I just can remove it. It is too stuck.

With my old computer I could press F2 to enter the bios, and then another key to reset it. Is there any such shortcut to load the defaults here? Otherwise how often would I have to hit tab to select that option?

I would love to make a PayPal donation to the person who could help me do this trough software. The only problem, I can't see how often to press which button, because obviously, I can't see the display...

Never mind I removed it with the small nail scissors... I will keep updating here, and if it is technically allowed, make a donation... I mean you're helping me here, so you guys deserve a reward...

Unfortunately, the M6700 has a GUI BIOS. There is a button to reset it but you have to hit it with the mouse. :p
Later on I can reboot my machine and see if there is a sequence of keyboard buttons you can press to activate the button.

Well that's a stupid design choice. Never mind though, I at least got the bios to work.

Now let's see how windows will like it...

Hooray. My computer is back online. Thank you all for your help! I massively appreciate it. The Dell Tech support was clueless, and the only solution they could come up with was a motherboard replacement.

I would like to offer Aaron44126 a small PayPal donation, either to himself, or to a charity he might like. You helped me beyond words, as I am sure you have helped many others. While it obviously won’t be enough to support you – although it might buy you and your friends a beer –, and it must not be seen as a bribe, I would like to give you a token of my appreciation. Just contact me through PM and we can figure something out.

Anyways, I have some tips for people who will also suffer this problem, and are as technologically challenged as I am – maybe you will be struggling with the same issues:

    - When removing the CMOS battery, it is important to push away both of the tabs at once, rather than just wiggling on one side. Indeed you might need a two sided tool, like a pair of tweezers, or a small scissor. I pulled for about an hour, alternating from left to right, but the tab was going nowhere. After a short, even, push however it was disconnected. Connecting it again was also easy. I just had the exposed metal pins facing up, and sled it back in.
    - When booting it is important to switch to whatever drive mode you were on before everything went wrong. Before the crash mine was on AHCI so I needed to switch that back. Otherwise you will probably experience a BSOD.
    - If you are using bitlocker, it’ll ask you a recovery key. These are drive specific. I made the mistake of not noticing the drive letter below the input box, where it actually says for which partition it is asking the recovery key.
    -
I still however have the problem which led me to changing the optimus settings in the first place. I have, connected to my laptop to external monitors which I am using in addition to the built-in display: a Dell u2713hm connected via displayport, and a cheap Samsung connected through HDMI.

This setup has served me well. It is great having so much screen real-estate, and apparently it can even drive one more high resolution monitor by daisy chaining the displayports.

I wanted to try multi-screen gaming though. This led me to discover that the display built-in to the notebook is driven by the Intel i-gpu. Is there any way to also drive this panel with the nvidia card?
