I'm not having a problem with sleep, but with hibernate.

I'm currently making sure all drivers are updated. I won't be able to contact Dell until this evening.

Control Panel, Power Options, Setup "Choose what the power buttons do"

    Edit:

This probably won't help much but all the other setting are there too. Be sure to check advanced settings as well to make sure something isn't set to wake it up.

Things like the lid popping open could bring it out of hibernation easily.

Ok, the power button control panel setting, as far as I can see, controls whether the power button shuts the machine down, hibernates it, sleeps it, or does nothing. There's nothing in there that I can find that controls whether the power button brings the machine back from hibernation.

For what it's worth, since I have to shut the lid on the laptop to move it at least once a week, but don't want it sleeping or hibernating when I do that, I have it set to hibernate when I press the power button, and to do nothing when I close the lid. This morning, I pressed the power button, then closed the lid when the screen went blank, but before complete hibernation. That's typically what I do. Maybe I need to wait until it's completely hibernated before sticking it in the bag, from now on, regardless of whether this problem is "fixed."

The latch on the lid was firmly latched, so I doubt that was what caused the wake-up. I'm guessing it has something to do with UltraVNC or GoodSync, but I don't know for sure.

It can be tricky all these power options settings in different places. I'm not certain that an opening lid would bring it out of hibernation but it will with sleep.
You could probably spend an hour trying to test the different combinations to find the exact one right for you then double check so that it won't happen again.

Just a reminder to go through the Advanced power options to make sure everything is ok.

Sorry that happened to you, a hot unventilated computer is scary.

Oh, so VERY scary. I hope that it didn't do permanent damage.

I will go through all of that this evening, and I will shut the machine down before I go home. I'm not going to reinstall the battery until I get home, either.

    Thanks,

    Tracy

I'm pretty sure thee is an open lid setting somewhere as well, I got an elitebook that won't resume from sleep unless I press the power button.

I had one time my 6600 didnt sleep properly and sit in my backpack for an hour, no biggie exempt the whole chassis is hotish warm. Though yea, it is not something worth trying :).

Probably check device manager and see if your mouse/wifi is allow to wake the computer. (not sure if that affect hib ~~)

That is another good place to check for settings related to waking.

I'd try my hibernate settings but with the SSD's I disabled it and only use shutdown and sleep these days.

Here is Updated ver. 3.1 with Windows x64 support.:
    Dell Inspiron Inspiron/Latitude/Precision fan control

But this soft wasn't developed for a long time. I really doubt that it works with M6700.
