Dell Feature Enhancement Pack maybe, HWiNFO might work too, but for laptops, controlling the fans is almost always impossible.

Choose a different power plan. There's one called "Quiet" which will minimize the fans. It will also probably reduce performance...

Ok cool Bokeh, thanks very much for taking the time to reply to me. My old Dell Studio 1535 Core2 Duo laptop can drive my HD650's very nicely, I'm suprised that the brand new M6700 isn't on par with that. Ah well my search goes on for a really quiet powerhouse laptop with a nice headphone amp lol. I might have to go with an M18x but those noise levels are crazy I heard. I wonder what the noise would be like just running Cubase, hmmm. Anyway thanks again for your reply Bokeh.

If you have the Dell feature enhancement pack installed, these options show up in the Windows power settings:

I have it set to be "Quiet" on the "Balanced" mode and "Standard" on the "High performance" mode. It's possible to switch quickly:

For normal work, "Balanced" is fine, but I kick it up to "High performance" if I'm doing a major CPU job or gaming.

It does make a difference. Often when I switch from "High performance" back to "Balanced" the fan slows down immediately. But it doesn't completely eliminate the use of the fan.

The sound is very good, but there is a limit on absolute volume. My guess is that they will do the equivalent of 90db of in-room speaker sound. Your definition of loud may not be the same as mine.

The other thing you mention is that you want a quiet laptop. If your room is reasonably quiet then you may not have any issues at all with volume.

Isn't it most likely that an audio editor would connect his own sound card/device? I'm in the beginning phase of studying Avid's Pro Tool and that is the configuration they suggest. There's just too many levels of use to do otherwise.

In any event, there are also external headphones amplifiers you can attach to give you that added sound/bass boost you so desperately desire. Fiio is a popular place to start.
Sadly, a setting my machine will never see. :( Nevertheless, if you can't control the settings directly, you may have some luck if you try the indirect route.

I've found that different surfaces can absorber and reflect varying degrees of heat. So just altering the surface (if possible, of course) can sometimes have a dramatic effect on how ofter your machine's fan cycles off and on.

If that's not possible, you can go the old tried and true cooler route. But in most cases, just raising your laptop off the surface, can trigger the same positive (to a lesser degree) result.

My assumption was that when change profile(where the fact is you changing dell setting) is that the fan look up table reset so the fan go down. The fan table is similar in all those quiet/high performance/etc irrc.
    Spin up @ 60s
    Spin down @ 40s
For example, you hit 60s ->the fan spin up and drop it to say 55.
If you switch profile @ 55, the previous history is gone -> fan is over spin-> go back down.

    Just my guess though.

    I am still debating on running 32GB of the Corsair Vengeance 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR3 1866 MHz (PC3 15000) Laptop Memory CMSX16GX3M2A1866C10.

I read a few on the forum here that have it working fine.

Anyone know if there is any long term issues that can arise running this oppose to 1600? Does the machine run hotter and is there more of a battery drain?

    thanks,

    Mike

I haven't noticed any sort of heat or power issue when upgrading RAM from 1600 to 1866 or even from 1333 to 1866. If it really comes down to high RAM usage, you might see a small increase in RAM heat but probably nothing even remotely significant.

Went back and listed again today. The volume goes up to what I would call medium loud. Zero distortion. The bass is really good for the HD600s. Much better than an iPod/iPhone. Not floppy overly warm bass, but fast full punchy bass.

The resolution outperforms anything on Youtube. CDs sound very good.
