Here is the file. Any idea if this is newer or older. As an FYI, This M6700 Covet is a replacement to a defective M6500 Covet. It looks brand new to me, but maybe was sitting around somewhere so might be an older machine. I am curious if it is.

Edit: I chatted with Dell. They said it is a new build. As for the bios, they have no info on it. She said she would think the .33 is newer but was not sure. I would think .33 is newer than .5a too.

    Thanks,

    Mike

I've just begun investigating that myself. These newer solid state drives with full disc encryption coming to market. I'm clueless when it comes to data protection.

Incidentally Feb 11, is my new red letter date. I'll bet you can guess why.

Tonight I installed two 8 GB memory cards. This is in addition the the two 4GB I have under the keyboard that came with the machine (24GB total now).

    The new cards are the Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory (CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10).

The cards that came with the machine are Nanya Technology NT4GC64B8HG0NS-DI

The Corsair are CL10 and the Nanya are CL11.

Before installing the new cards, the windows assessment for memory was 7.8, after it is now 7.7. Just curious if this is normal.

Also, using CPU-Z, it shows the Nanya has JEDEC Timings Tables 1 to 7 and the Corsair has only 1 to 3. I have no idea what these are and just curious if that is normal to be different like that.

    thanks,

    Mike

Curious what speed your memory is actually running at now. In CPU-Z, on the "memory" tab, you should be able to get the DRAM frequency and CL.

(The JDECs on the "SPD" tab are just different configurations that your modules support. Since you have two different kinds of modules, they have different stuff here. My Corsair modules only have 1 to 3 like yours.)

    DRAM Frequency is 665
    CL is 9 Clocks

    Is this good or bad?

    Thanks,

    Mike

    CPU-Z Memory 2013-01-26.JPG

    Edit:

Not sure if this helps. I exported a CPU-Z to an html before the upgrade and under Chipset, it said the Memory Frequency is 798.1 MHz (1:6) and CL is 11.

The same print now after installing he new memory the Memory Frequency is 665.1 MHz (1:5)

    Is higher better or lower?

Yep, so your memory is now running at DDR-1333 instead of DDR-1600 because of the mismatched modules. It'll be a little slower than before. That probably explains the drop in WEI, Windows cares more about the speed of your memory than how much of it you have for that test.

If you want to get DDR-1600 back you can remove the two 4GB modules for 16GB, or buy two more 8GB modules for 32GB. If it doesn't bug you (I imagine there won't be much noticeable difference) than you can sit at 1333 until you feel like upgrading to 32GB.

I probably will get two more. I am hesitant at getting under the keyboard so that is why I have not. Since I am going to replace all 4, should I just go with 1866? They are not much more. Looking at one of your previous posts, these should do:

    CORSAIR Vengeance Performance 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1866 Laptop Memory Model CMSX16GX3M2A1866C10

Is getting under the keyboard easy? I read some say yes and others say no.

    thanks again.

I would recommend going with the same 1600 modules unless you're going to buy four of the 1866 modules. It's best to have them all match specs so that you don't get bumped to a lower speed.

The first thing I did when I got my M6700 was replace all of the memory and I didn't think getting under the keyboard was a big deal. The trickiest part is removing the keyboard trim --- just take it slow and carefully and you'll be fine. After that, remove a few screws and the keyboard comes out, and the memory slots are right there. (Careful when removing the keyboard as there is a cable attached to it, it's possible to do the memory swap without disconnecting it.) Instructions are in the manual available on the Dell support site.

Thanks again. So if I plan to change all four, then going with the corsair 1866 is probably best?
