Dell Precision M4800 - Can GPU be upgraded?

I ordered the Nvidia Quadro M2200 today. my amd and nvidia heatsink might not work as the chip they are made to cover are not as rectangular as the M2200.
My M2000M and AMD 5100 are more square.

does anyone know which heatsink will work with the Dell Precision M4800 and the M2200?

I have tried the HP card, to no avail on QHD m4800

following was tested

WX HP 4150

DP out X no signal
DP out (internal display power off + cable Off) X no signal
VGA out X no signal
Secure boot off X no signal

card is warm so it works but V bios needed, ill upload images o the card I used against original, but at this stage my thinking is to just return it and get green card.

so all in all HP marked Blue card is a no go on QHD machine.

you can use any heat-sink that covers DIE and adequately covers VRAM+ dont remember name chips that get hot.


main thing is to make sure DIE has levelled contact with sink this would be priority. _+__+__+__+__+_+_

when DIE area is lower (top toward bottom) than expected it makes it: vram is easy to compensate with thermal pads

when DIE area on sink is higher however it would require a shim around 1mm usually (just bead both sides slap it on die and lower sink on it make sure VRAM pads are just a bit higher than contact point between card and sink. thats it.

 

Glad to hear that someone are trying HP Blue card. I have suggestions:
1) There is a good GUIDE How to flash vBIOS, but i suggest to use AsProgrammer instead of CH341A Programmer (LINK TO GUIDE).
2) Yes, card is working, but for better cooling it needs a copper shim (0.8mm will be best). With copper shim temps on card will be at lower 60's.
3) Thanks for trying. At least we have some information. I will provide full DELL vBIOS (512kb), not standard 256kb which you can find on internet.

What about K2200M? this card is a cut ver of m2200?, I've just had contact with ALI EXPRESS store where they said this is best compatible card for M4800 QHD, from the specs found online it has 2 GB VRAM and pushing about 80GB bandwidth which happens to be on par with others, yet pixel rate theoretically is lower.

I was asking about compatibility of WX4150 or4130, and this was their answer.

also I have ordered WX4150 online (HP ver.) and box it came in states 2GB instead of 4GB? (image attached)

sadly HP failed to boot remained warm and seemingly powered but without any signal out (I am thinking its absence of VBIOS) also had back-thought maybe I should have downgraded my BIOS to something lesser than A26 , maybe A10?

 

M2200 > M2000M > K2200M

M2000M is faster than K2200M and has twice the VRAM as well. M2200 is faster than M2000M.

 

UPDATE: I finally accepted the 1909 feature update recently and found the same problem - Microsoft Basic Adapter video driver had reasserted itself. I tried modifying various recent NVidia drivers and the latest Dell package to no avail in safe mode, DDU uninstalled drivers, test mode etc. Eventually succeeded with installing Nvidia 397.64 driver (2 years old). I don't know why I can't install more recent drivers.

 

OK I have to quick report that Green PCB WX 4150 from bay with DELL vbios works perfectly.
the only issue is that BIOS 25 says "unknown video card with 0MB memory" so all driver updates are manual direct from AMD

reading this I would like to upgrade my M4800 with currently M5100 GPU to a WX 4150.
But I am not sure which card I would need.
The laptop has FHD as internal resolution
The screen is a B156HAN B156HW01 V1 and should be LVDS

Could you please tell me if this card would work for me?
What else would I need? Do I need a spacer for the heatsink or a flasher?

 

So, you don't have any problems with upgrade, but:
1) You should run Display in Enduro mode (When integrated GPU output image to laptop's display, and WX4150 just making calculations), otherwise laptops internal display wouldn't work.
2) No one know's is HP cards working in M4800, all what we know for now is: With stock HP vBIOS they doesn't work. I'm in conversation with a guy, who probably can flash Dell vBIOS to HP card and check if it works.
For anyone else, who dont want do flash and want Plug&Play solution - Just buy Dell WX4150 (Green PCB) from ebay or Aliexpress (Cheaper).

P.S. You also need a copper shiom 0.8 thickness for better contact of GPU die and Heatsink.

 

do you have any issues with cooling? did you need to run software to cool the gpu down?
