    thanks Bokeh!

In the power management settings the option to allow the computer to switch the port off when not in use to save power is enabled.
However it is disabled in the settings of the connected camera.

Should I try to untick the first option? Wouldn't that eat quite some battery life?

The cables are clean for sure.. (must have unplugged/plugged it about a hundred times today...)

The K1100M should be good for SolidWorks (definitely better than the integrated gpu). I am having no issues with the K2100M in my M4800.

Currently I'm waiting on a offer from a sales agent from Holland.

I asked him for a configuration like this:
    8GB Ram ( 1 module ), 128GB Msata SSD, 500 GB HDD and a 3200x1800 touch panel.

I think I get the offer tomorrow and I will share the results with you.

    What an excellent discussion.
Based on what I've read here and the Black Friday 10% discount I have decided to buy my self the top of the range and XPS 15. I did consider getting a Mac Book Pro but the possibilities presented by the high resolution touch screen the high likely hood of being able to run linux on it as primary OS seemed to push me back toward M3800 or XPS 15.
In the end I decided that the key selling point of the M3800 is the graphics which I do not really need. So I figured I'd spend the money on the larger battery.

    Hi,
Mine M3800 arrived to me in Denmark today, ordered 16/11, shipped 21/11, delivered today. So far it is very nice, I have not found any of the things mentioned in this forum yet, fingers crossed.

I'm also a photographer with a D800E awaiting my M3800... have you tried the Nikon supplied cable? It's very short of course, but it should be the gold standard of compatibility. If that works ok, I would then make sure you're using high quality USB 3 cables.

Also: What OS is on your M3800 and what was your Thinkpad? And finally, what program are you using to tether? I use Capture One which occasionally has tethering issues on new OS versions. You might try running it in a compatability mode for a previous version of Windows. This solved a tethering problem for me when Win7 SP1 came out.

Edit: A quick search on usb 3 cable lengths recommends a maximum of 3 meters. I know the D800 stays in contact continuously and needs a solid stable signal so this could be it.

Would love to know in short....buy or dont buy? whats the worst problem your having if any. Really looking to honest thoughtful answers from the community of owners rather than external reviews (which only use the product for a very short period).

    Thanks in advance,

    Andy
