That Thule case looks very good as well, albeit it seems a bit thick. More protection, I guess. On the other hand, you need which use are you going to make of it. If you are going to have inside a backpack, suitcase or similar, you may prefer a thinner one. On the other hand, if you are going to hold it by itself, you might prefer one with belt/handles and/or pockets.

Are there any fine-tipped styluses that will work with the FHD touchscreen? I'd like to be able to jot down notes with more accuracy than using my finger, but can't seem to find any compatible pen-style styluses.

Yeah, the Dell technician is actually right. They made a few changes to the M3800 and released an updated version in early 2015. Reading this forum, it seems that none of the people who bought the updated version experienced the coil whine issue.

Judging by the picture you posted, it seems that you are the owner of the first version M3800. Other people here with the same issue have stated that changing the motherboard did indeed fix their coil whine issue. Even though in some cases it caused some other problems for some of them which were fixed down the road with another Dell Technician visit.

Anyhow, in short, have Dell replace your motherboard and that should fix it up for you.

    Cheers.

The Thule case looks fancy and sturdy to be sure. Depending on the types of places you are planning to take your M3800, it sure looks like the better option even given the higher cost.

    But,

I feel like I have to clarify a few pointers here.

    1. The thread you referred to is talking about the 15 Inch version of the Thule case, but your link goes to the 13 inch version.

    2. The Amazon pictures and the thread on notebook review both suggest you can use the laptop while inside the case. That might be the case for the Mac Book Pros with their vent right underneath the screen, but the M3800's ventilations are on the back of the machine. This way the inside padding of the Thule case would block the ventilation of the M3800 which can result in overheating.

Sadly the case is too small!! I'd really have to squeeze and force the corners in for it to fit. To be honest, I'm worried I'll scratch the edge of the Laptop over a short period of time doing this. With much regret, I'll be returning this case and trying another - so anyone with suggestions, please recommend some to me.

No idea how it fit for the other guy on the thread I posted earlier, but its just too much of a squeeze for me.

For what it's worth, the case is very solid and feels like it would do a fantastic job protecting the machine within. It's got just enough flex but also has a high quality feel to it. Good points about the overheating. Personally I didn't plan to use it within the case itself.
Surprisingly it's not actually thick. I thought it would be thicker but its has a very slim profile. Feels amazing, but shame about the fit!

Just reinstalled win 8.1 Pro on the M3800 due to unrepairable crash of win 10. I don't know the reason. Fortunately i had a mirror of win 8.1 from before upgrading to win 10.

I don't know if bios update A10 has to do with win10 errors.

    Anybody else having similar problems?

Dell has replaced 3 motherboard, 4 fans, 1 daughterboard to try to fix the problem. Then they decided to replace brand new machine. Currently, this is my 4th brand new M3800 from Dell. And the motherboard REV is what I see in all the Dell machine. Can you confirm your Motherboard REV and manufacturing month and year? So I have proof to them that my motherboard is old version. Thanks.

Unfortunately, I can neither confirm nor deny the motherboard revision since I am currently in the research stage of buying this laptop and don’t actually own it yet. But as I mentioned earlier, I have indeed read the entire forum so far and among the people who bought the updated version, the one that hit the market in early 2015, nobody reported the issue anymore.

Hopefully, they read your post and can have a look inside their laptop and help us out with regard to what it is it actually says on their motherboard to help you out.

Out of curiosity, when you say “this is my 4th brand new M3800 from Dell” are you counting the number of times they changed the boards as you mentioned earlier or did they, in fact, change the entire machine 4 times over trying to fix the coil whine issue?

You need to reinstall the original dell driver that came with the laptop. For me, I found it in:
    C:\Drivers\audio\R0R12\Vista64
