Dell Precision M3800 Owner's Review

You want a MacBook with a touchscreen? Alright, I'll take that "nobody" back: Only one person on this planet wants a touchscreen on a MacBook.

 

Oh of course. I have a touch screen (secondary monitor) and a tablet (wacom) for my desktop and hardly use them over the mouse/keyboard.

For your information, as of now, I too find touchscreens of little use while working on a notebook. However, things change when interacting with others while in front of the screen: when exchanging ideas or doing a presentation people tend to touch the screen, they try to interact with it (hit links, change pages, scroll etc). The mouse and/or touch pad become clumsy alternatives. There's an untapped potential here and other people's fingerprints on my matte screen are clear proof of that.

This weekend I watched a 2 year old being sat in front of an old laptop to watch some pictures: the kid had only interacted with a smartphone before, so he began to touch the screen but nothing happened. He became increasingly frustrated and was about to start crying until someone came and showed him how pressing keyboard buttons would show a new image on the screen. The kid reluctantly started using the keyboard, although every now and then he would still reach for the screen.

You should be more like that kid, Pirx. All he wanted was a touchscreen, but life only gave him a keyboard that afternoon.

I doubt its for that reason, probably because they'd rather you buy an iPad and a MB, whereas if it shipped with a touchscreen people would be less likely to buy a £400 ipad. For the £50-£100 it adds to the price its worth it for me at least for the rare occasions when it is slightly useful and its not like they're going to become less useful in the future.

 

By the way, that is another major reason why I don't want a touchscreen: I absolutely hate fingerprints on my screen. What's worse, with a touchscreen I can't even wipe the screen while the laptop is on, lest I wreak havoc on the software environment that happens to be up at that time...

 

Can you not disable a touch screen in the device manager?

 

Whelp, this one has a touch screen, so can we stop taking up space with this pointless debate?

You don't think it can possibly be useful (which is a fairly closed minded sentiment) and other people don't care. Awesome. Let's move on.

Hello everyone I have been following this thread for a while. I was about to pull the pin on getting a 15" rMBP however the Dell m3800 came to my attention. I am most likely going to go with another Dell (currently using the XPS M1530 & yes I have had a ton of problems, motherboard replaced 4-5 times etc...).
So I am finding it difficult to decide between the new XPS or the Precision m3800? Other than the GPU I can't really see the difference between the two. Which one would be better for gaming, watching HD movies etc?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you

 

Most likely the XPS 15 because of the more standard drivers.
