Going thin and light is good and all but doing so by ejecting drives is not my idea of progress. Furthermore, the UHD display is great too but to get any real use from it you'd need an UHD source.

Has it occurred to anyone that if/when 4k comes to fruition its most likely to make its first appearance via some incarnation of blu-ray? The very thing none of these new higher resolution laptops have. Despite the opinion of the folks at Apple (yes, we know you have itunes), the OD is not dead.

100% sRGB is nothing ground breaking though, that amounts to what? Close to 75% aRGB if I remember my stuff right. It is good for a laptop display, but you are still far from the 100% aRGB that some people require.

I think it is something like 66%-67% argb.

Wide gamut adaption is real slow (all the people on mac screen are not on wide gamut per say) and add extra manf cost. At least they need a new panel, and then per unit calibration.

Remember, this is a workstation, not an entertainment laptop: the higher resolution is primarily for work, not for watching movies. And just because the OD drive is not built-in doesn't mean you can't have an external one if you really need it. Why carry something that you don't use daily? I don't remember when I used the OD in my current laptop last time. And with the WiGig docking station, no wires would be even required: the OD drive can be sitting on your desk, while you and your laptop are on the couch. This could be better than spinning the disk inside the laptop. :)

As for Ultra HD/4K, the first delivery mechanism will be download. If a new Ultra HD Blu-ray format ever emerges, it will likely require a new drive anyway: just one more argument for an external drive.

The CAD/CAE packages that I use are definitely UHD compatible (more resolution the better if the GPU can cope) and a good UHD source that gets plenty of real use.

Oh I understand that. But as someone involved in media creation, the whole point is to make sure you begin with the best you can get.
I under stand that as well. My point though is, we don't develope the idea that the OD has become dead weight. Its still needed, especially in media creation.

I don't think so. Especially when you consider we are still struggling with true 1080p. For the foreseeable future, blu-ray is still king, and nobody's download can match it.

How long will it take for h.265 to become prevalent for streaming / download?

I personally haven't traveled with OD in a Precision M for almost 10 years with different needs
I can't remember the model #'s but used to use one of the bay batteries for long haul flights before power outlets in economy (hated the extra weight), then a 256GB thin 2.5" Toshiba HDD in the bay (pre-SSD days) and now just a blanking plate to keep the weight as low as possible.

    What about in the factories?
As a rule we avoid WiFi on-site if at all possible and I know of other companies which mandate a hardline "for security" (I am told), or they just tether and avoid local networks all together.
I always feel sorry for the guys carrying those hard coded VPN dongles.

While I am admittedly not the target market, I do wish for a more portable M4800 replacement.
We tried using the M2400 for travel in its day but, at the time, it just wasn't strong enough.
And it will be interesting to see how many M3800's I see while traveling in Asia versus at Starbucks.

I am excited Dell has a relatively thin and light 82 watt (CPU + GPU) workstation class laptop.
How loud will it be at load if they went carbon fiber for the lower case, as I believe someone stated?

Looks like 3 of the 4 ports have SuperSpeed USB icons and the 4th maybe a custom Dell USB PD icon?

    Maybe it's a USB3 dock?
