Students seem to always grossly overestimate how much power they need in a laptop, so probably yes :)

This would be a really nice laptop for people who travel a lot. In my job, the most important aspects of a laptop are (ranked in order of importance) - SSD, RAM (12GB Minimum), CPU (Quad core is helpful), and Video card. I've got a W530 and dislike it (power brick is awful!) when I travel. This Dell would be fantastic for my work, although 1080P would be more practical to match the target systems I develop for.

At work I'm seeing an increasing number of MB Airs and Retina MBPro 13/15s because of how convenient they are for travel.

Awww come on. Let's be honest we all want more power, and really I am not sure any of us truly grows up. Just look at my thread about the new Quadro....

Today I was at a major shopping mall so I popped into Sony to see a laptop I had been reading about. The Sony Vaio Pro 11 (i7, matte screen, 256 SSD).. It weighs 087 kgs, and I am in love! I asked them to show me the power adapter and out came this thing a few sizes bigger than the lighter I used to use when I was still smoking. Wow. I went to look at the SVP 13 inch but it had touch screen and was too reflective. This is what I want for my travels. I could even travel with this and my M6600 and not even notice. Only strange thing is that the Sony guy said it was upgradeable to 16GB but I have not seen posts on that.

I hope Dell releases more info on the 38, 48, and especially the 68 soon,

Fact is, I could have just as well afford a MBP retina or otherwise. But its lightness, wasn't enough to make up for the other 90% of of the things I desired most in a laptop. Granted, the MBP has some conveniences and a group that loves their products. However, that's not me. No, I won't be getting a MBP nor anything that looks like it no matter who makes it.

I just wish this would come out sooner so that I could get it for my upcoming school year.

The new school year is the most popular time for new computer sales. Second only to the holiday sales.

I thought that M3800 was really good looking until I realized that while they put in a high-res display, they totally skimped on the GPU. K1100M? That's like a GT630M. Ridiculous. Let's hope they'll give some proper customization/upgrade options.

The K2100M is listed @ 10 watts more than the K1100M and there currently isn't a lower wattage Haswell available unless you change sockets and lower the core count from 4 to 2 = ouch.
Let's hope that Intel releases some lower wattage 4 core Haswell CPUs by the time the M3800 ships and Dell is smart enough to take advantage of them and upgrade to the K2100M for the high-res display option.

Interestingly some online spec's for the new Quadro M's differ somewhat from the NVidia page in memory type and interface:

MODEL GPU CORES MHZ GFLOPS TMU ROP SMX MEM GB bit MHZ GB/s WATTS
    K1100M GK107 384 716 550 32 16 2 DDR3 2 128 1400 45 45
    K2100M GK106 576 654 753 48 16 3 DDR3 2 128 1500 48 55
    K3100M GK106 768 683 1049 64 24 4 GDDR5 4 192 1063 102 75
    K4100M GK104 1152 694 1599 96 32 6 GDDR5 4 256 800 102 100
    K5100M GK104 1536 771 2369 128 32 8 GDDR5 8 256 902 115 100
A decent <50W GPU doesn't look feasible unless they can somehow perform the same magic they pulled going from the K4100M to the K5100M, improving performance nearly everywhere AND doubling the ram to 8GB ...then... somehow keeping the power the same @ 100W = pretty impressive.

The Dell M3800 needs half of a K5100M for that 3200x1800 screen = K2550M anyone?

Looking at the specs, K1100M is like a K2000M (best you can get in the 15" M4700), with the clock speed reduced slightly. Doubt you're going to be able to do much better in an "ultrabook"-style thin laptop.
