It's looking like the M4800 will have the same high-res screen without the other compromises of the M3800.

A Mac was never on my list. Was it on yours?

Some of my most used programs for work do not have native Mac versions and I strongly prefer Quadro for certain apps so Apple isn't a viable option for me personally.
And I am not sure if the MBPro can take more that 16GB of ram? Our M4700s start to choke at less than 24GB and 32GB is much better.

I was referring to Apple's marketing line "MacBook Pro with Retina display The world's highest resolution notebook".
They will have to change it to something like "The world's highest resolution 16:10 notebook".

I spend a lot of time on the road and would love a more portable Precision M.
Funny thing about the rendering of the M3800...the very first thing I noticed was the rounded corners and said to myself 'finally'.
Would have been nice to not have to take a grinder to the standard M chassis corners...

Is this a potential play to engineering students?

If the Tweakers.net info is correct you are looking at budget model of $1700 for probably the standard 1920x1080 display, minimum ram and an HDD.
And the 37W mobile Core i7-4702MQ is the lowest spec / lowest wattage FCPGA946 processor currently available, so there is no way to lower cost there either.
As an engineering student I would have been looking for cheaper options.

It would be a nice tradeoff to have a 28W processor option to allow for the 55W K2100M versus the 45W K1100M Quadro for the 3200x1800 display, but that is probably wishful thinking if the GPU is soldered to the main board - I doubt Dell wants to qualify and support 2 different PCBs for such a new model.
And less than 30W currently means giving up 2 cores for mobile Haswell processors...unless Dell played games with programmable TDPs.
NVidia really needs to get their power usage down.

I remember on the M6700 thread a couple of people were saying the 17" chassis was too big for the classroom they were in. I disagreed about the size being too big. On the other hand, my backpack does not have any textbooks adding weight along with a notebook.

You can also add in animation, photography, videography, architecture, design, graphic design, and finance students. Any major using software where the Quadro will speed things up or you need a screen that can display a ton of information. There is a lot of software without a Mac version. Bootcamp running Windows 7 on a Mac is also an option, but you won't get the Quadro acceleration and there are lots of posts about "side effects" if the software runs.

With the Retina MBP currently running at $2599 with an educational discount, saving a Kilobuck might also be a part of the student's decision making process.

Looks like it will have some docking capabilities too. Doesn't look like a standard dock, could be USB3, hoping it isn't.
