That is good news. I hadn't known of the TB16. It is a replacement to the TB15 I assume.

*the user guide seems very complete.

    http://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_electronics/esuprt_docking_stations/dell-thunderbolt-dock-tb16_user's guide_en-us.pdf

@rallydog, Is there a "Special Graphics Mode" for the 5510 in the BIOS as there is on the 7x10 precions? I wonder if you might need to enable "special graphics mode" to get 60Hz from your two 4k displays. As I understand it, "special graphics mode"on the 7710 enables the Intel gpu to offload higher bandwidth tasks through the dGPU instead of the Intel GPU. Or something like that.

Else, what do you get if you don't daisy chain them? Any change in refresh rate if connect each external display direct to the dock?

No change if i connect each directly to the dock. I'll try the BIOS updates you recommended and report back. I was just chatting with dell support and even they are stumped. They seem to think that the 5510 wont support dual 4K 60Hz monitors but I can't even get one 4K display at 60 Hz (except for the actual display on the laptop).

UPDATE: There doesn't seem to be anything in the BIOS related to the graphics.

In the TB16 user guide it mentions on page 10 and page 18 of the many various drivers and firmware updates. If hadn't already, try updating those in the order they are listed?

I'm anxious to try this new thunderbolt dock myself, although i only have 2k external displays

*Edit, also where were you able to find tb16 for sale? I can't find it online in store. I can only find knowledge base and manuals for it. I may order one.

Also what does the Intel graphics control panel show? Does it allow changing refresh rate there?

The drivers should all be up to date but I'll go through the user guide and re-install everything in order.

You can change the refresh rate in the Intel HD Graphics control panel. It shows both of my external displays but only allows either 29 Hz or 30 Hz at 4K. If I drop down to 2560 x 1440 I can get options up to 60 Hz. I attempted to add 3840 x 2160 at 60 Hz as a custom resolution and get a message that "The custom resolution exceeds the maximum bandwidth capacity".

Dell actually approached me about the TB16 Dock. I had a few support calls with them last year and had one that they thought was defective replaced. They contacted me in December and sent out the TB16 to replace the TB15 I had. Not sure when they will be available for sale but I'd say if you have a TB15 to contact Dell and see about having them swap it out for the new one.

(FWIW - My TB15 was working fine, though I couldn't get 4K at 60Hz on that either.)

    Hello,

I have ordered my 5510 from dell's outlet store just before Christmas. When I was placing my order I noticed "32 GB DDR4 Non- ECC 2133Mhz (16GBx2)" was mentioned twice in product description which I thought is a mistake. Now Dell has shipped my order and it will be delivered in next few days. When I checked on their website by putting in the service tag, its showing QTY 4 in front of memory information. This is really strange as we know 5510 can only have maximum of 2 RAM modules installed.[IMG]

I've seen this type of strange listing at the Dell UK Outlet. I think you will get only two RAM modules in the computer and none loose in the box. The E5570 which I bought from the UK Outlet last April had both these items in the list:
    • Dell Wireless 5811e LTE Mobile Broadband
    • No WWAN Card Included
It did include the WWAN card. Perhaps whoever typed up the list for the Outlet didn't know that LTE = WWAN.

Hi, I recently had an issue with my precision 5510 motherboard (installed BIOS 1.16), dell replaced the motherboard but strangely the technician loaded BIOS version 1.02 and since then I have tried number of time to update the BIOS to latest version. The issue happens once the BIOS is updated, but at boot up SSD is not recognized. I have send so many emails to dell technicians but no result, if any one can suggest on this, I will really appreciate.

Perhaps the board was new but quite old and will come with whatever BIOS was current when it was made.

Someone I came across advice on the Dell support site of not trying to update the BIOS by more than three versions at one time. There use to be a link to previous versions on the downloads page but I can't see it. However, a web search for Precision 5510 BIOS finds some previous versions such as this. However, before you go there, first hit F2 when the Dell logo shows on boot to enter the BIOS setup to check whether the defaults (storage drive type, RAID / AHCI selection and UEFI setting) match what you think you were using. I have know BIOS updates change/ reset the defaults.

Hi John, thanks for the advice, I checked indeed BIOS changed after the update. I drill to issue that earlier in Boot sequence option (1.02 version) I can see UEFI device mentioned as my SSD but after update that option is not coming. Should I know try using incremental update as you suggested or is there any solution which can again list Boot device. Thanks again for your quick reply.

Yes, try the incremental BIOS update aproach. Maybe the locations some information is stored in the NVRAM has been changed. First get back to 1.02 if you haven't done so already.
