I've not heard it but it's possible that my hearing is no longer sensitive to this noise. Age sometimes brings benefits.

Did you hear it on any of the XPS?

 

I've not been near an XPS so I can't make that comparison.

So after a year of full use on this machine, I must say that this is probably my most favorite laptop ever. It took some time to get things right with Windows 10 and drivers for the Samsung 950, but since the Anniversary Update this machine has been rock solid. I used to experience BSOD's several times a week, but that I'm sure was attributed to the Dell TB15 docking station. I replaced it with the WD15 a few months back, and no more BSOD's. My only minor complaint is the space bar on the keyboard - it squeaks from time to time, and sometimes doesnt register my clicks. I thought I'd be rid of this machine by now and back on a ThinkPad, but I think this Dell is going to stick around for a while longer

Fixes & Enhancements

Fixes:
- Update QoS logic for connected Thunderbolt devices to prevent potential false postive warning.
- Thunderbolt driver installation Error Code 1639 in specific corner case.

Enhancements:
- Change in Installer to set AutoConnect mode by default for Thunderbolt Networking connections.
- Thunderbolt permission granted for general user to managing connection setting.
- Enhancement to Thunderbolt device connection stability for cold boot.

There's also a new Intel Graphics Driver (29th December) following closely behind the Nvidia driver released on 22nd December which was close behind the 1.2.18 A16 BIOS on 19th December.

Edit: Also a new WiFi driver 22 released on December.

Perhaps Dell have been trying to tidy up the bug list before the 5520 arrives and creates a new list.

PS: I've applied all these updates. My 5510 still works and there's no change to what I consider to be a Thunderbolt bug: Plug in the network dongle (not connected to any LAN) and the power drain increases by about 2.5W and the fans come on (triggered by a sensor? not monitored by HWiNFO). Fan noise when the rest of the system is cool is undesirable and this power drain isn't wanted when running on battery.

PPS: I tried putting 4mm of thermal pad on what I think is the Thunderbolt chip (next to the display connector socket) in the hope that it will convey the heat to the computer base. It took about 4 minutes before the fan came on but I'm not sure whether the pad is actually touching the base. If it is the temperature of this chip which is triggering the fans then the silly thing is that the fan operation will have negligible cooling effect on that component.

 

This new Thunderbolt driver is listed as A01, shouldn't it be A03?
The A02 dell release date nov30-16, states june 29 during install.
The latest A03?, dell release date Jan 03-17 states nov 21-16 during install...

Not sure why but I've seen them reset the "A" counter for a particular download or driver several times in the past. Pay more attention to the version number.

 

So is there a definitive screen flicker solution from Dell for 4K screens? I have tried BIOS version 1.2.18 and mine still flickers, had to revert to 1.2.0. I am using the latest available Intel HD drivers 15.4531.

A beautiful laptop, but this issue is really annoying me.

 

I had got the impression from the XPS15 9550 screen flicker thread that the problem was substantially fixed by the latest BIOS. You might want to compare notes with the people there.

Got a TB16 dock today, no issues with it so far. My TB15 was actually running pretty well and swapping in the new dock went smooth. I've got 2 4K monitors attached running at 30Hz, they are daisy chained off of the mini display port on the dock. That was the only way I could get both to work with the TB15. I'll play around with the wiring and see if I can get both running at 60 Hz.
