I am one of the older 5510 users. I have never seen this. My first instinct would would be to check for a physical issue with the battery connector. Does the machine reboot itself - as in you see it shutting down - or does it blink to off?

I would prefer the 5510 over the XPS 13. The extra screen size helps with editing in photoshop and lightroom.

To echo some other users, I have set up a number of 5510's here at the office and we have never seen this issue. I suggest that you put in a service call, Dell will probably replace the mainboard and possibly battery as well.

thank you all for the fast replies.

    The problem is as follows:

Laptop works flawlessly when connected to the AC sord-no problems whatsoever.

When i shut it down and let's say i want to turn it on after 5 hours or in the morning-doesn't start unless the AC is connected.
The funny thing is it starts properly without the AC adapter if i try turning it on after 30 min.or something after the last shut down.As soon as it's been out of the power grid for a night-doesn't start unless plugged.

It does have charge in the battery, though.
Also when no AC attached when i turn it off,it restarts automatically after a few minutes. What is annoying is that for example if i am outside and want to use it without the power cord-i can't start it.

Been through all the official Dell tests from their website-all seems fine.Ran some other programsstress testing the laptop-all appear normal.I bought it from Germany and currently in Brussels-not sure how the whole on site Dell thing works. It costed me 2800 eu and having all these problems really makes me rethink if it worths it.It's 2016,one pays for premium quality and still suffers problems.I will see if i have the latest thunderbolt drivers or the proper ones-need further research and after that i just give up.Can't sacrifice hours a day for 2 months now just to solve this issue.

    thank you once again,

    bests,
    Ronnie

interesting stuff-decided to completely drawn the battery. After it turned off,tge laptop tried a few times to switch itself on-i captured it on my iphone before it dies completely and here is the video.

what does this self triggering point to?Quite a curious thing.

ps:this clicking noise is not from the laptop. It does make noise from the fans as it tries to start which you can hear while the power button lits.

very strange behaviour, hopefully by purchasing the precision (which afaik can only be got through dell business?) you should have full European continental cover for on-site repair, because as far as I can tell, Dell Europe operate across the entire continent as one, so they would just send you whatever subcontracting engineer they would use in any situation for on-site customers in Belgium, whether you bought it in Germany or elsewhere in the EU.

Got a motherboard and battery replacement-amazing service by the Dell guys.Called them and the guy arrived in my studio the next day.Replaced the motherboard and the battery, ran full diagnostics and all done within hour and a half.No more problems with self restarting or not being able to launch when on battery only.Very satisfied with this service

Run the regular diagnostic tests from the dell page, make sure drivers are updated. If you don't experience any more overheating as you said,go get a beer or orange juice and enjoy your precision :)

Also make sure that the BIOS and Thunderbolt firmware are up-to-date as well as the chipset and Thunderbolt software.
