I haven't seen any dynamic contrast on the 5510 but I have on the 7510, so I would like to check on this. I don't see it on the 5510 drivers page. Where did you see it exactly?
    Thanks.

I can't find the windows registry editor on Ubuntu? /sarcasm ;)

Another issue I have is the display every few seconds dimming a little bit for a very short period of time; resulting in a very subtle single 'flicker'. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Has anyone had experience with the Xeon E3-1505L (as compared to the M). Clocked lower (2.0ghz/2.8ghz burst vs 2.8ghz/3.6ghz), but also uses less power (25W vs 45W). Dell seems to have several of these available. Increased battery life worth the performance trade-off?

My experience with the 6820HQ suggests that the power management under light usage means that a quad core 45W CPU can be quite frugal. Also, the simple expedient of disabling Turbo Mode when running on battery (set the maximum processor state to 99% in the advanced power options) will prevent the CPU running in the less power efficient operating range (where the voltage is increased to ensure stability). Unless the 25W Xeon is significantly less expensive and you are happy with the lower performance then the 45W CPU provides you with greater flexibility.

Great insight - thanks! Will go with the 6820HQ (since there don't seem to be any 1505M's around)

    Hi all,

I am considering a DELL M5510 or HP G3 Studio lately. I like to do photography editing and 10+ tabs in Chrome + some office work. Currently own a HP X360 (i7-5600U, 8G Ram, SSD, 2k Mon). Would anyone can advise is M5510 a better choice? Alternatively, how about the New XPS13?

Any known issue with M5510? My HP 360 has throttling when it gets overheat. A bit annoying some times

    hi everyone,

i have the 5510 xeon processor for over 2 months now-all in all amazing laptop.Use it for vfx tasks and performs as expected. The quadro is a beast when it comes to rendering.Processor performs quite good and the display is sweet.

What really annoys me to the point of now ghinking of returning it is that there seems to be some problem with the battery-laptop randomly starts itself when no ac attached.Other times it just doesn't want to boot when there is no ac.

I've tried everything-updating the latest drivers, trying all the BIOS drivers and so on-nothing helps. If anyone had a simular problem,i would be more than happy to hear a solution.

    bests,
    Ronnie

The cooling system of the 5510 is designed to handle full CPU + GPU load so it has some headroom under most operating conditions. You can also check the XPS15 9550 discussion for thermal issues but note that some of the users tend to push their systems to the limit, and beyond.
I've not encountered this problem nor read of other people experiencing it. Did all your updates include the Thunderbolt driver and firmware? Thunderbolt has caused a few headaches. Also recheck that the BIOS is 1.2.14.

If these are all OK then it's time to contact Dell support and discuss the problem but first check the log on the BIOS for any clues. I would expect the outcome of the discussion to be replacement of mainboard and battery but they may also offer to change the PSU as well. Precisions usually come with on-site service in which case you don't lose the use of the computer for several days.
