I agree with John on this on his points. I owned an XPS 15 UHD for a while, and now have a Precision 5510 FHD (specs in sig). The panel feels much more balanced in terms of weight, and although the resolution was nice to look at in UHD for images, I feel its a pretty redundant feature for a 15" panel as FHD is a perfectly high resolution for even photo editing work. Where the XPS may be better is indeed in the gaming department, which may be another case for going FHD. You want to game on native resolution ideally, but 4K is likely a struggle with any decent quality level for the games of right now, let alone future ones. I would say I've been an early adopter of high res when seeking out the 1680x1050 panel on my first XPS from 2007, but that kind of dpi is the sweet spot, the FHD panel looks great.
The quadro has its purpose rooted in workstation use, as does xeon, but they're both very capable bits of hardware that share fundamental architecture with their geforce/i7 counterparts, just with additional features.
I have no idea if its down to the combination of different configuration, but I sent my XPS 15 back because it simply crashed so much it was unusable, whereas the Precision has hugely impressed me with its stability, and had I known it even existed at the time of purchase, it would have been my first choice.

Has anyone heard anything about updated version of TB15 docking station? (just got 5510s for my team, but had to take WD15 as a temporary solution. Can not wait for TB15 due to amount of 1 UHD and 2 FHD external screens)

As I understand, originally updated version should have been released in August, than it slipped to October, then it slipped further...

I checked with my Dell rep recently. I got some WD15 as replacement for the TB15 but miss the dual 4K capability.
So I asked for the status for the TB15, when they should be fixed. They will probably never... there is a new dock coming in January instead...

Not yet. I'm waiting for the pricing to get sensible. I'm currently using a 1TB Sandisk X400. When the time comes, I would probaly get the EVO (which should be the cheapest) as the nominal TBW ceiling is still well above whatever I am likely to achieve. IIRC, my 840 EVO mSATA was less than 20TBW after 2 years of quite heavy usage (by my standards).

Driver updates for the USB 3.0 controller and the Ethernet controller came out yesterday and the enhancements are " Added the support for Dell TB16 Dock.". Haven't seen anything about it other than some chatter about it being mentioned in these driver updates. I imagine this is the new hardware that dell support had mentioned to a few people here.

    Install them.

Firmware first. I get the impression that Thunderbolt isn't as mature as it should have been before incorporation in this notebook and any updates which fix a few more bugs should be installed.

    Hi!

I'm here on behalf of my dad, who has had a precision 5510 for ~6 months and has been experiencing some pretty serious performance problems. He has the xeon CPU, 16gb RAM, quadro GPU, and 512 m2 drive. This computer should be a powerhouse, but can't even handle basic UI navigation without lag. I ran Geekbench 4 and got around 2000 single core and 7000 multicore, which I figure is about half of what it should have scored. My first thought was thermal throttling. I downloaded intel extreme tuning utitity, and it seems like the cpu is adjusting clock speed normally--I was regularly seeing >3 ghz. The utility also indicated no thermal throttling. Has anyone else experienced these issues with the precision 5510? If so, did you find a solution? Thanks in advance.

First run a thorough virus scan and check for other lurking nasties using Spybot S&D and Malwarebytes. Second, look in Task Manager to see whether system and resource utilisation look sensible under normal usage. If any process is hogging a big chunk of CPU then that could be the cause. Software / drivers which get stuck in loops are less common these days but cannot be discounted. Something may be corrupted and can often be fixed by reinstallation.

Third, make sure that the BIOS and drivers are all up to date. Put the service tag (it's under the flap on the bottom of the computer) into the Dell support website to get a list of these. Start with the BIOS, then the Thunderbolt firmware, then the chipset and Thunderbolt drivers, then the other drivers. Reboot the computer at each step so. Then check that Windows (10?) is up to date.

If those steps don't clear the problem then we need to figure out which part of the hardware isn't performing properly. Download and install SiSoftware Sandra. Then run the various benchmarks and compare the results with mine.

Let us know how you get on.

    John
