I used Crystal Disk Info and saw that the laptop with the stuttering problems shows different info than the laptop without stuttering issues.

    Suttering
    Samsung SSD PB22-JS3 TM 64GB
    VBM19D1Q
WinXP with all the mods I can find

    No stuttering
Samsung SSD Thin uSATA 64GB M
    VAM05D1Q
    Windows 7 x64 Ultimate

Wish I could find some updated firmware without having to call Dell to replace the drive.

I tried updating the firmware from that link on my VAM05D1Q 64gb SSD with no luck. I have another E4200 with the VBM19C1Q firmware on the drive and I'll try updating that one on Monday. Would love TRIM!

No dice. Looks like there is no firmware out there for the 1.8" drives. Lame. :)

Although I did get my replacement 64gb SSD from Dell today. My other one had "problems." Got VBM24D1Q. TRIM!

Could you elaborate a bit more on this? All E4200 SSD machines have an default Samsung drive right? Are you saying that never versions support TRIM?

I personally have an E4200 with 7x64 Ultimate. I got a while ago. When I ordered it the SSD was the regular old model, not the high speed one or whatever they get another $250 for at the time. It was a Samsung SSD Thin uSATA 64GB M firmware VAM05D1Q. It wasn't the fastest thing by any means, topping out at 87mb/sec read (8mb block) and 56mb/sec write (128k block).

Have a client with an E4200 on XP Pro with the same specs as mine, purchased about 6 months later with a 64gb SSD Samodel msung SSD PB22-JS3 TM 64GB with firmware VBM19D1Q. It would get 220mb/sec read and 100mb/sec write....but stuttered!

I know there is newer firmware out there, but seems to be branded for the 2.5" SSDs opposed to the 1.8" SSDs. I tried using all the firmware I could fine with no luck. Just would not update. So I called Dell, told them mine was slow and the other was stuttering. They replaced them both and both came with firmware VBM24D1Q which includes TRIM.

Now getting 220mb/sec read (4mb block) and 122mb/sec write (4mb block) and very happy. Mine is like a new laptop. Client is also happy since it's not stuttering.

Amazing what a newer firmware will do.

They no longer sell the 64gb SLC 'ultra performance' SSD, which read up to 110mbs.

Are the new 'encrypted' SSDs 128/256 as fast? faster?

Can Dell replace my current 64GB SSD, which I believe is ultra, even tho it doesn't say so, after a serial number check at Samsung shows this is an SLC.

    thx

I would guess if you got a replacement SSD it would be just like what I got with read speeds up to 220mb/sec.

anyone looking to get hdmi out on their e4200 can pick up the basic port replicator for $40 shipped from ascendtech. I was contemplating the new crop of SU7300 11.6" laptops and selling the e4200 to get hdmi, but I just couldn't justify paying more to get less overall just for hdmi. So picking up the dock for $40 and possibly the backlit keyboard will breath some new life into the 4200. Though that V13 has caught my eye. Might have to see what kind of pricing they put on it in the outlet and be on the lookout for a good coupon code.

just fyi...the dock has dvi so you just need a dvi to hdmi cable or adapter.
