I generally have mine in the backpack, together with a 1,5l bottle water and a thin stack of paper, thats ok to carry it to the office and back, but not the whole day as at Uni. For that, even my 2kg Toshiba is too heavy ;)

Hello -- Thank you for all your helpful information -- I am still trying to decide between 830 and T61.

My question is regarding display WUXGA

I have heard that it will look best in Native resolution, but what truly is the effect of bumping down the resolution, if I gamble on the WUXGA and want to change it down. Are you that bought WUXGA and are unhappy finding it easy to correct by changin resolution?

After all, I do it all the time on desktop LCD screens, without noticing dramatic change in the quality of the image.

    Thanks for any insight!

BTW, if the Latitude pre sales support in Switzerland is at all indicative for after sales support, there's practically nothing that could go wrong. This was by FAR the most helpful support I have come across.

If you dont notice it on your desktop screen, chances are you won't notice it on the notebook very much either. It DOES look different, but with ultra high resolution screens it generally works better than with less high resolution ones, simply because the individual pixels are in fact smaller.

Installed the 1GB Intel Turbo Memory yesterday. According to the 2nd Anandtech review (which I read later), it can add to battery life and increase performance in some situations. Overall the review was lukewarm at best however. I'll let you know how it does for me. Only issue I have seen so far is the Network controller dissapeared once after a sleep mode and Quickset could not report or correct it, only a manual re-enable via device manager worked.

Hello -- I now believe I want the Dell, and I plan to add a 6-cell in modular bay. But I am having a hard time deciding between 630 and 830, especially with all that added weight from the batteries. Could anyone with any thoughts answer these questions for me? Thanks!

    1. How is the keyboard?

    2. How is battery w/ 9-cell and 6-cell combined?

    3. Do you prefer it over the T61

    4. Will 830 it be too heavy with those two batteries to carry around school? (I am staying in one building, and driving to school, so not too much hiking, etc.) But do you find it easy to move around, etc. People have been warning me to get 14", but I think I want the extra stuff that 15" has to offer (graphics, screen, faster shipping)

    5. Is the 15" screen much bigger with WSXGA+ than the 14"

    Thank you very much!!

As for the weight, it mostly depends on what else you're carrying around at school. I find that 3-4kg in a backpack (I hate shoulder bags) are ok, but upwards of 4kg it gets kinda irritating quickly.

If you plan to put in your backpack, I'd definitely get a neopren sleeve for it, you might also want to consider taking the AC adapter with you instead of/additionally to the secondary battery?

    Can anyone comment whether
    KINGSTON ValueRam KVR667D2S5/1G, 1024MB, SO-DIMM PC2-667, CL5
will work with a D830 that already has 1GB stick in it?

    1. Keyboard is spiffy. Much better than the keyboard on my 500m, though it's "not a Lenovo keyboard".

    2. You mean life? I got about 5hrs with both, WUXGA half brightness, NVS 140.

    3. Seeing as I have not used a T61 I can't say for sure, but I did choose the Latitude over a Thinkpad on account of ports and weight.

    4. You're looking at about 7lbs. You can decide if that's heavy or not, it's subjective, imo. But seeing as you aren't doing anything TOO strenuous, it looks like it should be fine.

    5. About 10-20% more surface area.

Judging by the stats there doesn't seem to be any reason it shouldn't work, but you should crosscheck with someone else.
