I just took delivery of a D830 last week with the following config:

    Intel Core 2 Duo T7700, 2.40GHz, 800Mhz 4M L2 Cache, Dual Core
    WUXGA LCD
    4.0GB, DDR2-667 SDRAM
    256MB NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M
    160GB Hard Drive 9.5MM 7200RPM
    Vista Ultimate
    Dell Wireless 360 VSTA Bluetooth
    Intel 4965 WLAN (802.11a/g/n)
    9-Cell/85 WHr Primary Battery
    6-Cell/48-WHr Modular Battery

Overall, I’m very pleased with the machine. Like others, I was a little surprised to see the low 3.2 Windows Experience Index, but I’m not losing any sleep over it. I do have two questions though, one regarding the hard drive and the other, the video card.

The hard drive periodically clicks, sounding just like the “start navigation” sound event that Windows comes configured with by default. That particular sound event makes me a little crazy, so setting it to “none” is one of the very first changes I make to a new system. The D830’s hard drive sounds just like that event. It’s very quiet otherwise, save for the periodic clicking. I’ve got the BIOS acoustic management set to quiet. Has anyone else noticed this behavior?

Commander Wolf mentioned the ForceWare drivers for these video cards earlier in this thread. Like someone else who tried to upgrade, the Vista 32bit driver I downloaded from Nvidia also didn’t find a compatible card. Do I need to alter the install files before upgrading or am I simply not downloading the correct driver?

    Thanks in advance.

I purchased a Latitude D830 over the phone today as a replacement for the one I got last week. I asked the about getting the 8600 gt card. The salesperson asked around and told me I could upgrade, so I did. I am confused though because they gave me the integrated intel card and a separate upgrade car to go into the pc slot. This doesn't sound right. This is from the order:
    Quantity Item Number Description
    1 A1199484 NVIDIA 8600 512MB

Does this sound right? An 8600M GT PC card???

Does anyone know what the weight difference between the 6 and the 9 cell battery is?

Interesting. For those who've been following the NVS140M discussions, I spoke to a Dell rep yesterday regarding the drivers and the errors I've been getting. He said Dell would never release drivers without ensuring they are error-free. Okay. So I followed the steps he outlined to uninstall the driver and then to run the exe file downloadable from the support page.

Surprisingly, the WEI and the PC and 3DMark results are identical to the results I got from the Forceware on LaptopVideo2Go.com.

    Just thought I'd share.

For those wondering about the poor screens some have experience, I contacted dell customer support. A DHL truck is on the way so they can replace the lcd. The rep was very easygoing and quick to suggest this which would lead me to believe theyve been getting a lot of these reports?

Oh so the difference is quite small.

I'm 99% sure of getting the following
    D830 with WUXGA
    C2D T7100
    GMA X3100
    1GB RAM (1 stick)
    120 GB HD
    DVDRW
    IPW3945
    9 cell battery
    3 year international onsite warranty
    D-Dock
Vista Business (Dell can't get me students discount without it, sadly)

I had planned to buy it in the US, but Dell Switzerlands student discount gets me within 10% which I'm willing to pay to not having to deal with customs etc.

I'm happy with my 9 cell and weight. I carried it to the law library in a leather messenger bag, about 2 miles, with onloy mild shoulder discomfort
