    Hey guys,

My D630 is really a wonderful machine and I would like to treat it to a CPU upgrade. I am currently running a T7300 @ 2.00GHz.

    I have already added 4GB of DDR2 800 and a 500GB 7,200RPM HD.

So, what's a good upgrade from the T7300?

    Thanks!

Even if you upgraded to a T9600, I doubt the difference will be significant unless you do a lot of CPU-intensive work. Have you considered an SSD? That will make the biggest difference.

Yeah, I plan on getting an SSD.

See the problem is that I have a stack of various Dell laptops from clients. So I have been trying them all out, reading up on them and so on. You might (I do) consider it a quest for my perfect laptop.

For the last 2 weeks I have been using the D630 as my primary computer and I really, really, really love this computer. So I wanted to show the 'ol gal some love. If there was one thing missing from this machine it would be a built in SD reader. I have a PCMCIA card reader so it's no big deal unless I want to read files off of my 16GB compact flash card (also mounted in a PCMCIA card), so hence my conundrum. That being said I rarely use the CF card (maybe once every 2 weeks to back up critical files to). I have looked at other machines like the E6400 and E6510 as I have basically determined that after almost 20 years in IT, I no longer need the biggest baddest laptop and would much rather have something that is comfortable to use. This D630 is extremely comfortable for me to type on and not having seen the E series 14 machines in person, I don't really want to buy one only to learn that I hate the keyboard.

Yes for most things the CPU in this machine is fine, but occasionally some flash content will struggle. Other than that it's damned near perfect for me. Built like a tank, Intel GPU is plenty fast for forum browsing, reading in my Nook app, and doing general network IT junk. Plus it's relatively light and IMO looks great.

I mentioned the stack of laptops. So for months I have been switching machines back and forth, trying things out and whatnot. For me, I think, this is the machine. The one. Sounds geeky I know, but at my age (38 yes I feel old) I just want something reliable, quiet, good build quality, and a great keyboard. That would be this machine. Everyday that I use it, is everyday that I find myself enjoying basic computing again.

So help me out here. It's a socket P CPU. I was thinking of the T9300. Would that one work?

    Thanks in advance.

That'll work fine. However, if Flash content is struggling, it's a graphics issue.

Sweet. I also plan on adding the Broadcom HD decoder card if I can.

    I just repasted my CPU.

What a pain in the . I had to almost take apart the entire machine, but it's running much cooler now. The service manual was a big help. I have to say I am quite impressed with the build quality of this computer. The cables were routed nicely, there is plenty of room around all the components for air to flow evenly. They did a great job on it's design.

Now that is done, I noticed my empty slot is labeled FCM which I know is the flash cache module, but can I put a Broadcom card in there?

What kind of Broadcom card? I've used WLAN cards in the WWAN slot without issue.
