    MaxGeek,

Thx for the info about the hard drive removal, I got it out OK. One question leading on from this is, will all 2.5 inch hard drives have the connectivity for the small piece of Dell casing that attaches to the existing hard drive?

For example, will the grey plastic outer laptop case fix OK to a new drive to keep the outline of the laptop?

    Thx

Yes, the cover uses the standard HDD holes so there won't be a problem.

    Robin,

Thx for the confirmation about the casing clip.

One final question, my D630 Hard Drive is a 9.5mm thick drive, are all 2.5 inch laptop drives this thickness or do they vary? If there is a variance in thickness then obviously I need to make sure that the drive I buy is a 2.5inch with 9.5mm thickness.

I had not actually considered this up to now when I have removed the drive for inspection

Thx for all the help so far.

    Rgds

95% of the 2.5" drives you find will be 9.5mm as its the standard size for laptops. There are a few 12.5mm drives, but they are usually for very large capacities and are usually marketed for external drives and not for laptops.

I nearly pulled the trigger on a Seagate 500gb/16mb/7200rpm when I read about some reported noise and vibration issues from users.

Has anyone replaced their D630 HDD with one of these and if so is there a noise/vibration issue. I can get the equivalent 500gb/16mb with 5400rpm spin speed which is supposed to be quieter due to the slower spin speed.

Would I be better off sticking with a 5400rpm drive no matter what manufacturer, ie, is the speed gain offset by increased vibration and noise when moving to a 7200rpm drive in a laptop?

    Thx for any advice

I had the 500GB 5K drive that you mentioned there, there were no problems with it at all. I don't see much reason to go with 7K, they use more power and performance benefit is minimal. Also important to keep in mind is that the HDD would be right under the left palmrest, so you definately don't want too much heat.

Although I do have a SSD in there now, so the left palmrest is nice and cool. :D

If noise is a concern then stick with 5,400 rpms. If not then I'd get the new Seagate hybrid drive ssd drive. It may not be perfect, but it doesn't really cost that much more than a standard 7,200 rpm drive of that size.

The text looks pretty clear to me...

You'll want to download the driver from Nvidia or Intel, whichever graphics card you have.

I had not really considered an SSD, however, they are becoming available with decent storage capacities so it may be an option. I could possibly keep the old 160gb drive in a caddy for the module bay.

Are SSD drives available in a standard 2.5 inch by 9.5mm size with the connectivity to directly replace the factory fitted HDD under the left palm rest and does the plastic casing attach in the same manner?
