my laptop seems like it's only using 1 core. Is there some way that the dual core functionality can be disable? If so, how can I check that it is indeed working.

the reason I suspect this, is because my CPU is pegged a lot, and when I view in Task Manager the CPU usage, it doesn't display 2 CPUs like I thought it should...

I'm running XP SP2 as well, FYI

thanks in advance for your help!!!

Task Manager doesn't show individual cores - just CPU.

In the Performance tab, you can go to View > CPU History > One Graph per CPU.

However, in the Processes tab, there's no way I know of to view CPU usage for each CPU individually.

There is a Windows XP hotfix available that resolves the issue where XP only uses one core. If you are using XP, do a google search for the hotfix. At work we encountered the same problem with the D820's.

This is exactly what I'm talking about...

When I check that setting, it is set to "One Graph per CPU", however, it only shows 1 CPU graph... which makes me think that XP is only "seeing" one core. I DEFINITELY have a Core 2 Duo in this thing, a T7100.

Anyone else familiar with this XP hotfix that dbam987 referred to?

I think this update will do the trick. Try it out.

    Crap...

I just checked my machine, and apparently I have that hotfix applied already... At least, it's listed in Add or Remove Programs when you check the "Show Updates" flag.

So, I guess that's not it.

The hotfix thing is to make multi-core systems perform more efficiently...not quite what you are looking for I think.

I had the same thing happen to my Vostro. I am running Vista Business 32.

I fixed it by going into msconfig> Boot> Advanced Options> uncheck number of processors and then check HAL> reboot

It started to read both processors then. It also worked when you check the number of processors and indicate 2 processors.

I have also had an intermittent problem with the Intel Speedset not increasing the processor speed. I have to then go into the Bios and disable the Speedstep and save and then go back in and enable the Speedstep. I have not experienced this problem in a while.

I still have not been able to determine what exactly is causing the problem.

I'm no expert, but there's an option in the BIOS for "multi core support".

    Would enabling that fix it?
