I believe the extra price has to do with all the business/engineering applications that the Quadro cards have to be certified for.

Yeah, those certifications push the costs up. But to be honest, the real costs come from the ridiculous prices all companies charge for upgrades on business laptops. Going from 1GB to 4GB RAM is +$210 when you can buy 4GB RAM from newegg.com for $115 or less; hard drive upgrades are obscenely expensive and Dell isn't including things like the backlit keyboard, webcam, and fingerprint reader as standard on the M4400. Further, for their consumer lines, going from Vista Home Premium to Business is $130, and to Ultimate is $150. But going from Business to Ultimate on the business laptops is $50 - $30 more!

I think the HP might work out to be cheaper if they offer a discount like the $335 off on the higher spec M4400.

NP spajix....not all laptops are overpriced here....just precisions, but like the others have said, its because of the openGL certification costs.....very much worth it though if you run openGL software.

I WILL get one....its just a matter of swallowing the price for a lesser spec than I want, which I'm having a bit of trouble with:D

@Weegie: I'm having the same problem! I can compromise on RAM and the HDD since I can get them online for a lot less than Dell's asking price but the other useful upgrades add up to a lot more than I would like.

I know what you mean Electric.....what upgrades are you needing/requiring or just wanting?

Like yourself,I will get the hard drive locally since dell is being so pig headed with their upgrade prices, but don't know if the ram will be freely available here for a little while......oh well, such is life.

Suppose I can always get a dock and 2nd hard drive later.....

very easy just to go stuff it and max the CC out with money I haven't really got for all the upgrades.....but boy, would I be in the poop:D and dell, knowing my luck, will drop the prices the week after I get it.

Its going to be interesting to see what a fully spec'd out M6400 will be worth:eek:

I'd like the LED display, backlit keyboard, fingerprint reader, DVD burner, Intel WiFi, and webcam, all of which quickly inflate the cost. I can't believe Dell is actually charging for some of these upgrades. I'm also get tempted to upgrade to the 250GB drive since it's "only" $55 more and the 9-cell battery for enhanced battery life. :p

EDIT: Also, as the price goes up, the tax gets increasingly worse.
