PING? Wow. I will give it shot.
For like 3 hours today I turned off iCloud and location services, and again my push mail is off. Didn't do help. Checked my usage and it's at 20 minutes and my battery is getting killed and it's like.... WHAT. ARE. YOU. DOING. IPHONE?
    I can't wait till 5.1....

are u canceling out all of your unused apps? everytime i check out someone else' phone, i double click the home button to see how many apps are running in the background and there's usually like 50 things that weren't completely closed out. u can either end the apps yourself, or get an app that helps do that kind of stuff for u.

the next big battery drainer, that i can think of, is the screen brightness. i use my phone at about 40%-45% brightness. the factory setting is around 50%. other than those 2 things, i can't really think of any other things that would really drain your battery. i have a 4S as well. matter of fact, i didn't even charge my phone yesterday and my phone still has 64% battery life right now.

Hey houstoned, while you're here. I told a colleague of mine my dilemma with having to restore my iPhone to factory and then re-jailbreaking; he said I didn't have to do that I could've just restored to the jailbreak ipsw.

Is this so? Is one available for the absinthe jailbreak?

BTW, pertaining to the battery thing. I don't see any battery drain issues with my 4S and my brightness for the most part is always set to 75%.

I did read somewhere else about disabling PING as well and so I have had that disabled from the get go.

I read that disabling the Setting Time Zone increases battery life. Apparently it pings GPS to check your location for time zone.

    It's located in: Settings-Location Services-System Services.

one thing i don't mess with is custom basebands and firmwares, so i couldn't tell u about the ipsw thing. u might be able to do it that way, but the new jailbreaks are so simple that it's just better to go with the safe route. that's just me though. i'm really paranoid about messing up my devices.

    Yeah... I guess I'm a "casual" jailbreaker.

I think I only have 2 tweaks and 3 Cydia apps installed on my iPhone.

I'm still on an iOS 4 JB... going to do the iOS 5 JB some day.

You can create a custom Jailbroken ipsw with Sn0wbreeze. I don't think it works with the iPhone 4s or the iPad 2, but I could be wrong. Or it might work with the 4s, but it's a tethered Jailbreak(not much fun).

Thanks for the responses guys. My colleague has the 4 and not the 4S so after some googling didn't render much info I kinda figured it was something that was probably done in previous jailbreaks.

I don't have any apps installed actually. Even though I still close all the stock apps right away. A habit I picked up having a 3G with multitasking enabled.

I have the time-zone setting off actually.

Are you guys using iCloud? What about find my iPhone? And location services? Is location services always running or does it only run on-demand?

    Thanks.

    Check out MonoPrice.

TPU (the flexible plastic... not the silicone) cases are only $1 or some low price like that.

Edit: I said TPC originally. And it looks and feels better than its price... very slim, low profile an fits well.

Or the Incipio Silicrylic for iPhone 4. I LOVE the Silicrylic cases. They have a silicone skin that wraps around the device then a hard plastic piece fits over it and holds it in place.

Amazon.com: Incipio SILICRYLIC with Kickstand for iPhone 4: Cell Phones & Accessories

I've just not been very happy with OtterBox after the last few cases I've bought from them. They've been crappy quality and loose. My Captivate case was so loose it would come off if I dropped it, not protecting the phone at all. Plus it was huge. The Silicrylic cases fit very tight around the device... no wiggle room at all.

i hate those cheap gel/plastic cases.

i prefer the minimalist/slim-style case. i used to have the Incase Snap Case. i liked that case so much i upgraded to the Incase Snap Stand Case.

it's the most form fitting case i've ever owned. it almost adds no weight and bulk to the actual phone, but protects the phone VERY well. i've dropped my phone countless times, and the case has held up like a champ for such a minimalist case.

iOS app purchases are tied to your Apple ID... not necessarily just to your phone.

As long as you use the same Apple ID you originally purchased the apps with, you can re-download them.

Actually, I'm more impressed with the iPad 2 at this point: priced at $399, it'll be more competitive with lower-end tablets. Add in any additional discounts, and it's feasible that we may even see some stores selling it for as little as $350.

My $350 guess is purely hypothetical. I haven't seen any stores announce new pricing/sales yet, so we'll see. But stores like Best Buy do routinely offer gift cards on top of the same pricing. But I was referring to contract-less iPads.

I saw the Ipad 2 will now be selling at $399, but is it only to clear all their "old" Ipad 2 or will this be a permanent pricing?
I would love to see it become a permanent thing, since the Ipad 2's performances are still great, it would be a good thing to let the customers choose between the retina display and the standard one.

Like the last few iPhone versions... I think they will continue to sell the previous one at a discount for as long as the sales numbers support it.

But I imagine once the next iPad comes out (the new new iPad!), the iPad 2 will cease to exist.

Well, you say that but they now sell three generations of iPhone simultaneously...

Though with the iPads not normally being sold subsidised on a contract of some sort, I guess there isn't the scope to lower the price and still make a profit.

IDK. That IPS screen gives me the tinglies. I'm just saying.

The only things that REALLY truly set this tablet apart from any other is that monstrous GPU, and that amazing panel. Other than that, it's the same iPad 2. IMHO, I would have rather it kept HSPA+/1xEV, then just keep the stellar battery life.

And even they aren't likely to set it apart for long.
New CPUs/GPUs are reaching the market all the time and there's been rumours about Samsung producing a tablet with a ridiculous display resolution for almost as long as there have about the iPad.

From what I've been reading, it seems this pricing will be permanent, with iPad 2 production continuing at least into the near future. It's Apple's attempt to crack the budget tablet market that Amazon's Fire seems to be doing well in.

Hey i got a problem with my iPhone 4. Recently when i go into the "Messages" setting and toggle the "iMessage" switch, my iPhone will then proceed to freeze. and i then have to force quit the iPhone by holding the sleep and home button. I don't remember this happening before and i can't remember if there was something i did or installed to cause this little glitch.

I haven't tried restoring my iPhone that is more of a plan b or panic button scenario, mainly because i really can't be bothered because i am Jailbroken and i add my music manually.

    Any suggestions would be excellent.

Yes, there are various apps that can play .MKV format. But out of the box, no the iPad can't play .MKV.

At a minimum, VLC player can play .MKV

The new iPad should be able to play high bitrate 1080P MKV files. But for sure it will play 720P MKVs with the appropriate apps.

Take a look at AirVideo if you don't need this for when you're on the road. It's a clever solution that lets you stream movies on-the-fly from another computer on your network allowing for a much, much larger movie library.

Yeah, converting MKV to MP4 format can take a fair bit of time. Requires additional software to convert. Itunes can't convert MKV. Even if it could, it might sound convenient, but it can be a hassle given the time it takes to convert to MP4. It's generally better to get an app that can natively play MKV files. Especially if you have a lot of MKV files or have access to a library.

    It can't handle MKVs.

Here's a somewhat popular way to do it, but it requires conversion software; http://www.bigasoft.com/articles/convert-and-play-mkv-in-itunes.html

Lots of guides on the Web about how to do this with iTunes 10.xx

With with right app, yes. It will support the subtitle track embedded in MKV. VLC can do it as well as a few others.
