I have thought that it is mostly a SLI + 3D problem rather than a 120Hz 3D screen problem.

Kudos to Sager/Clevo for the delay. I wish they had shown this much due diligence 7+ years ago when I was an early adopter of their 9860 model...which just after the one year warranty period became a very stylish $3600 paperweight. Purchased HP's and a Dell's after my Sager experience, which never gave my a hint of trouble, but I've always missed that desktop cpu performance. I'm toying with the idea of returning to the Sager fold.

If I do get a P270WM, (1) I'll be watching this thread very carefully first, monitoring the trials and tribulations of the early adopting "guinea pigs"...no offense meant by that, but once bitten, twice shy on my part; and (2) Ill definitely be getting the 3 year warranty...and crossing my fingers.

Despite SLI and 3D issues almost all OEM's do the same releasing the normal screen and then the 3D versions. I do not so much care about 3D but would love the 120Hz screen as it is easier on my eyes. On my one 3D app, RealFlight, it actually makes for more fluid and realistic movement.

For that reason too I have no issue if the delay gets me a Kepler GPU as well. While I would most likely never SLI the system there is no reason for not having the best and latest equipment. I doubt IB's will be out by then but a 3820 place holder is fine by me.................

It looks like I will be spending $2000+ every two years on a Clevo. I sure hope I can sell the old x7200 with i7 950 and dual 460m close to $1500.

You should be able to get that much for it. Did you have an extended warranty?

The x7200-NP7280 are selling well on Ebay....

The main thing that will help you sell it is to sell to other countries too. Not just to the CONUS. :)

Too bad, because an extended warranty would have added significantly to its resale value. :(

couldnt agree more. its nice to know how to fix things yourself to save money, but the only reason why gaming laptop has such a small market is because 99.99% of the people dont know much about laptops or the specs of it. pretty sad yo.

also, the old NP7280 has issue with its cooling problem, BIG TIME. compare it to alienware m18x. that hexa core 990x isnt a very good idea in the first place, but i guess sagers/clevo really worked on this issue and they decided to put a 4th fan for cooling, and that got me really interested =/

i too will be waiting for people to test things out before getting one myself, and hopefully wait for faster memory/ SSDs/ graphics card to come out by june/july. or else i'd be just getting an ivy bridge laptop from m18x R2

I think opinions may vary on this one.

Here are some quotes from others, including two M18x Alienware users, in regards to the x7200:

well with both skyrim and bf3 going over 75c and even to 80c, thats definitly not better than AW. my m18x only goes as high as 68c with skyrim settings maxed so yea.

    hmm......what if x7200 fan speed 50% and m18x 60% at 60~80c?
so dont compare gaming temp with auto fan speed, if u wanna compare, both turn on max fan speed and use same burn in software :)

in addition to same ambient conditions. Too many factors. But just looking at the GPU heatsinks of the 2 systems, I'd say the X7200 is about 20% more robust.

so why would they add additoinal fan in this 9270?
even though 990x makes more heat than 3960x obviously they knew it had heating problem thus drop in cpu speed.

Please note that the Clevo x7200 / Sager NP7280 SLI model has/had 4 fans. This 4 fans is not new.

For example you can see it in a YouTube video I did as well as others... :)

4 fans, so if I add a few a radio and a servo's can I fly it? :) I guess though there has to be some way to remove all that heat. I can only imagine what all those desktop components generate in such a small space.............

I'm scratching my head over the decision to move the windows key to the right side of the keyboard....... very strange.

Maybe the final product moves it back to the left??? Not that it really matters that much. I use the key occasionally, but I guess I can get used to it being in a different place.

I tend to accidentally hit that key when I'm playing a FPS, MMO you know and even when I'm working in Milky, it's something that gets on my nerves :p

A question would be when the NP9270 was offered it was being advised to use 2x power addapter and a addapter with 2x sli gtx 580m's. Could this be one of the stablilty issues Clevo is trying to fix? Maybe under the same configuration the battery can not handle the drain?

Unless the BIOS is ACPI compliant, I don't think there is anything you can do with that.

However, if anyone is feeling adventuresome, they can try what this user tried when they get their P270WM:

    From user arg8:

    arg8 takes his cooling serious!

No doubt! That's a bit overkill for modifying a laptop to reduce noise. But I guess some folks are a bit more picky than others. I've been to enough metal concerts to ruin my hearing to where fan noise doesn't bother me I guess.

I don't believe either of them do. It's a feature that is typically only seen in business class laptops and is tied to the motherboard. If you're looking to do Bitlocker, you'll have to use an external USB to authenticate.

Yes, the later rev's of the X7200 had a TPM, and the P270 should also have a TPM built in.

Is TPM encryption then done on the hardware side or is it software emulated using up CPU cycles? Appologize I am not to familiar with the chip etc........

Edit; from the link below it looks like it i supposed to be true hardware but we have all seen devices that through a bus actually use the CPU independent of the OS....................

Slightly off topic while on topic :)

Hi guys, I'm mostly a reader here ( a lot, lol) but could really use some advice here as I just can't make up my mind there is just too many options and I am having a really hard time narrowing it down. You guys seem to ether own the system I am considering or be interesting in the other (that has not shipped yet :( )

First a little back ground that I think might help.
I am a graphic artist I use CS5 master collection a LOT. I MIGHT get into some 3D rendering work as well. I am not a massive gamer but I will be getting Diablio 3 when ever the heck Blizard gets their &&%^^# together and releases it. I keep my systems till they pretty much die, I have an M1710 that's a bit over 6 years old and on its last leg at the moment.

    With that said.
    I am looking a the NP9270 and the M18x R1 / R2
I KNOW I am going with Nvidia Cards Starting with the GTX 580M , I have heard the the m18x r2 will have the GTX 675M in them BUT that they are really nothing more then re-badged current generation GPU sets.

The CPU is a point of contention for me. I have heard the CS5 does not like hex cores but can not find anything to really back this up one way or the other, while at the same time I know having more threads and a larger cache sounds like it would only help with the processing power. :/ I like the upgrade ability on both systems as at the point of order I would ether be going with the i7-3930K in the NP9270 or the i7 2860QM in the M18x ether way down the road would upgrade it too the maxed out core at some point.

Ram wise I intend to order what ever system with as little as I can. I can get ram cheaper online then from most all companies I have seen with the systems. I will be maxing out ether one to the full 32 gigs.

Nether system offers the display I would really like to have , 1920 X1200 so there is no deal breaker there. Most all other specs are comparable nothing really wining one over the other for me..

Any help would be great, also open to any other ideas on systems if I have over looked something that would work well for me.

Where did you hear CS5 does not like hex core? Do you have a link?

"CPU: Intel Core i7/Xeon or AMD Phenom II/Opteron with 4 cores. More than 4 cores gives diminishing returns." Key words "Diminishing returns" I have seen it slighting noted in other places as well.. But then I have seen it listed as MORE is better ...
Source > Building a Photoshop (CS5) Computer | NYC Graphic Designer Roberto Blake

and I believe that the question was if anyone would tell me what would be best as I am at a dead tie..

"Diminishing returns" does not mean that it does not like hex core processors, it just means you don't get "as much" extra performance over a quad core.

The hex core will give you more performance in CS5 than a quad core (not less), it just won't be a 150% increase in performance.

We sell both Sager and Alienware, but for your purposes I would recommend the Sager hands down. It will give you more performance, will support 3 hard drives plus your optical drive and is smaller and lighter (even though you say size doesn't matter...I get that...but still :))

The Alienware fans are going to kick me in the nuts for saying this but........

Why spend 2k to 3k more for an Alienware when you can get a better spec'd NP9270 for around 2.5k? No offense to Alienware/Dell, as they make a solid machine, but the basic config on an NP9270 is still better than a pimped out M18x that will cost you over 4k.

Thats probably true, but not all of us qualify for the military discount. I did back in the mid 1980's, but not any longer.

I like Alienware and would probably have one if could only get it for what I am paying for the NP9270, and with a similar hardware config. I can't, so I am going with the NP9270 instead. I think it is worth the wait.

In general, that would depend on the software which runs on the CPU. In regards to Adobe CS5, that would be a better question of Adobe software engineers, and not of Paladin44.

I can tell you one thing from personal experience, with multi-core processors becoming more and more common, software developers are re-examining code trying to determine how multi-threaded apps can improve performance. However, well written, bug-free, multi-threaded architecture can be really, really hard. It is taking longer to get the software up to speed for newer CPU architecture. Over time, this will improve.

I thought we already covered this back here - http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...clevo-p270wm-owners-lounge-4.html#post8273467. Add about $250 - $300 to the x7200 price ( or you can also configure your own ).

Summary - If you do any custom hardware tweaks (memory, drives, network cards, etc.), with non-sale items AW can end up more expensive or just about the same as the P270WM. However, you're also comparing the P270WM which has not even been released against the M18x R3 which by P270WM release will be 12 months into production. (Not that necessarily means anything.) Also if you do not have any kind of large discount, the price gap can be significant.

Based on your requirements I'd go with the M18xR1. It's already available and is pretty much a perfect system in every aspect. We have no idea how the 270 will perform in CS5 compared to the AW but my guess is, there will be very little difference if any. I'd consider the Clevo for professional video encoding or overclocking and benching (provided it can be OC'ed). Other than that the M18x has quite a few extras like 5hr battery life, macro keys, WirelessHD, etc.

No kicking but that's wrong. You can always get a price much lower than the advertised (especially if you live in the US) and if you upgrade RAM/HDD yourself, you can save even more. To me the 270 looks far more expensive as of right now. For example, Dell charges 500$ for dual 580Ms while Sager would cost you an extra 1000+. Even without his military discount the odds are in favor of the AW, IMHO. With Clevo's the prices are fine but non-negotiable, at least not by much.

And you are still debating? With your discount, you can get a M18x with a 29x0XM and OC' it to 4.5ghz on all cores. That would give you an edge in most cases. IMHO, there's no question :)

With any thing out there, AW or otherwise, you are comparing apples to a fruit that you have never tasted!

Not exactly. Both the 3930k and 3960x are tested thoroughly by now and you have all the numbers you need to compare them to the mobile sandy. All the rest is same as the x7200. ;)

Yes but you are talking about OC with the AW where you can not compare OC on a non existent system. Also where are performance numbers any where on a X79 and 580m etc. You can make general accusations but not a scientific fact...........

Edit; X79 may also in the future alow IB CPU's where the x7200, or other HM67's, may limit upgradability. Also there are pre-order configs with a 3820, this may alow for high overclocks as well and with any HM67 where is there even an option for 6 cores?
