I had to get mine replaced twice, but now I have a working one. They must have had a bad batch.

I've never done a BIOS update before and it's my first UEFI Pc so I'm completly in the dark. I've noticed that the shop where i bought the laptop has uploaded new bios version, but i may break the warranty if i fail at the update

Who did you buy it from? If you don't mind me asking... Did they allow you to install the new keyboard yourself or did you have to send it in?

I hate asking newb questions but a quick search left me with no solid answer. Also, my head is about to explode from trying to get linux dual-booted and configured like i want. But does anyone know if this drive will fit in the M.2 slot of the NP867*?

No, that's a msata drive, not a m.2 (sata or pcie) drive.

I am thinking of buying the P670 soon over the P177. Does anyone know where you can download drivers for the P670?

Just a heads up, Don't upgrade you graphics drivers from the little nvidia app they have installed on here. I deleted all the drivers i had and downloaded the one from sagers site because it was made perfectly for this laptop. I didn't delete the old ones before i downloaded the ones from the app so i screwed myself there.

Kind of ironic how they give us CDs for drivers and windows 8 when theres no disc drive on this thing el o el. Impressed by this laptop otherwise, 30 - 40fps off the charger on maxx settings, that's redonk

If it is a Sager branded computer they will allow a cross ship for user installation. Other Clevo sellers may have different policies, best to check with your seller directly.

    Hey guys,

l was wondering if you could help me with some info on the
    Sager NP8672?
Background: I will be doing a lot of stats on large databases, coding and document revising having two-three documents on the screen. So i thought 17" is better than 14" 1366 x 768 company laptop abomination I have right now. RAM is important too, so 32 gb would be the best. Wanted 980m for the sake of occasional gaming (dont have much time for that) and some mental satisfaction. Will be hauling back and to work every day. Will be taking it to coffee shops to work there, so weight is important. I have until April to buy it. Price below $1,800.

    - Will there be any new variation ofthis 970m/980m super slim 17" from now until April? Maybe a better screen or lighter?
    - Will there be other super slim laptops coming out before april with 970m/980m and the 17" screen?
    - How does Sager NP8672 compare against MSI stealth pro series in your opinion?
    - Is it heavy to bring it in the backpack?
    - Is it comfortable to work on in cramped conditions (e.g., coffe shops) or is it too bulky?

I went to bestbuy but they didn't have a lot of 17" in laptops there, they all seemed a bit bulky but it's because of their weight i think.

Would greatly appreciate any advice! :)

    Depending on your budget, you can look into the Gigabyte P37X (980m) $1900, Gigabyte P37W (970m) $1600, or Gigabyte P37K (965m) $1400
0.9" think on the Gigabyte compared to 1.2" thick on the P670SG.
Weight wise. 6.17lb with battery for Gigabyte and 6.83lb for P670SG. With the power brick, around 7-8lbs I think.

I was looking at the Gigabyte one before but opted for the P670SG mostly because of the cost and because it just came out recently.
The P670SG is decent size, maybe a little too think but overall for the price I'm happy with it. Weight is find as well, I put it in a backpack and I'm off.

    Hope that helps

I looked at the Gigabyte models and TBH i wasnt impressed with them. I Did like the Aorus x7 and i was literally gonna buy one until i found a thread on this site talking about the support and how bad it was. and likely this is a one of coming from alienware, ive seen some reports of terrible service and i havehad A+ service from them since i Bought my 1st m17, however my job limits the time i have to Bs about with warranty and all, i nixed it and came bcak to clevo.

From looking at the Eurocom site, you can Config a Decent P670SG for your Budget., ill have mine monday ill report back as to size etc etc, since travel is a concern with me as well. Id recommend getting a base model from a reseller, and adding your own RAM & SSDs, you can save quite a bit doing that.

I don't have the answers to all your questions but i can say this... i've owned my fair share of higher end laptops in the past and my NP8671 is definitely one of the best quality builds i've ever owned. There's quite a few screws to remove to get the bottom plate off but once it's off, you have access to nearly everything.

As for your particular situation, if you're only occasionally gaming, spending $2-300+ more on the 980M seems like quite a premium for 20-30% performance over the 970M. The 970M is quite sufficient for all current games. Now, if you're wanting to get the most life out of it or don't care about budget, definitely get the 980M. ;)

I'm not sure what Sager or other vendors have down the pipeline but the NP867* series is quite new so i highly doubt that you would see any new revision from Sager any time soon.

As for the stock screen, for me, it's perfectly fine in games (higher color gamut wouldn't hurt) but i find when switching from a game back to the desktop the screen just seems too vivid/bright and not in a good way. I did have the same issue with my previous XPS M1530. It took me quite a while to get the settings perfect. I have weird eyes.

If you do get a 17" laptop from any vendor, make sure whatever backpack you have or purchase can fit the laptop inside.

I am looking to buy and will buy the system with 8GB and add ram to it.

Anyone know where I can buy the exact ram that comes stock in it? Want to add another stick of 8Gb. Unless it's not cost effective to get the exact same one.

The exact type is not guaranteed, however any CL11 1600mhz 1.35V ram will pair well with the standard sticks.

Thank you for the info! Would be interested in hearing your experiences traveling with it. I was thinking to do a base config as well, and with time upgrade RAM and drives.

Liked Aorus X7 pro for its low weight but the price is too high.

Thank you for the advice. The screen is enough to do some superficial graphical work too, right? Say Illustrator and what not?
Will look into 970m based models.

I just ordered a 16gb kit (will be in next week) and would be willing to part with the stock 8gb chip that came in my NP8671 for a decent price. It's the Samsung module. Have plenty references if you're interested.

Not sure if this is allowed or not. I'll remove if so.

I can post some links later when I have more time but from what I've read it's above average for a TN panel overall.

Only problem i have now that really isn't much of a problem, is the CPU area makes a noise as if it were a bicycle wheel with a card in it, making that flap noise not loudly but when you put your ear up to it, you can hear it. Don't know what that's about

    Everything else: Super pleased

You may want to remove the bottom cover and make sure nothing is interfering with the CPU cooler.

Today was a Good Day. ......

Revceieved a call from the Fed ex place @ 4 oclock that the package was ready to be picked up ( wasnt due until monday) i made it there just before they closed and Got it....

I opened it, installed my Ram & HDD, booted it up and......I got a 980???

Looks like i got some kind of free upgrade from Eurocom to the i7-4720 & GTX980 from the 4710 & 970m

I did get the 90% screen gloss screen ( i prefer over matte), i can tell the difference, but it doesn't Touch my 17x-R2 screen, although i haven't calibrated it yet. I doubt that it will make it worth the extra $130, but it is a nice screen, better than the pics of the Matte i have seen ...imo
today was a Good day... =)

on another note did anyone flash the prema mod? is it worth it at this point? looks like last update was in January.

Prema mod bios files are great for tweakers but it's not required. That is a large jump in specs, seems like they sent you the wrong system.

Wow! Congrats on the new system and for winning the free upgrades!!

If you go back and read this entire thread, this was discussed for quite a while...i believe it was determined that there was no IPS displays currently available. And i vaguely remember talk about some boards not having the correct connector to support an IPS display. Someone else that has more info may be able to fill you in more thoroughly or you can trudge through the entire thread ;)

Grab the service manual from Prema. It will show you which is the CPU cooler. You could just take a look with the system off and see if there is anything stuck in the fins of the fan or gently spin the fan with your finger, etc. But if you're not comfortable doing such a thing you may want to just contact your reseller. I would not brush the issue off as it could potentially be a major issue. If the fan happens to be defective, it could lock up and you'll lose all CPU cooling, etc. That's a worse case scenario but it's possible.

I mean i stripped a screw in the process, pretty pissed off. I spun the cooler gently and i couldn't see jack so i just emailed support. Doesn't seem like anything is wrong but that noise can't be ignored when talking about 1800$ heh. I'll see what they say. Passed all tests unless that test thing is a lie and they don't care about our pc's

I only recently purchased the laptop. (2 weeks now) so can't comment much on traveling with it. I previously had a P170HM and the power brick and laptop was a beast to carry around. The P670SG's power brick is smaller and lighter and the laptop is also more smaller and lighter so it should be much easier to lug around. I mostly use a Everki backpack (very light but not as much padding) to carry it around and it just fits. I also have a Slappa Matrix backpack that I use to use but it was a lot heavier (but more padding).

I almost added some more ram. There's 2 sticks spaces on the bottom and 2 sticks spaces under the keyboard.

The Aorus X7 is heavier than the Gigabyte P37X I believe. Another laptop that I was looking at was the Maingear Pulse 17 but the price was a little too hefty for me as well.

Edit: message @ elwood. I thought I knew how to quote, but it turns out I do not.

thank you very much! With the other companies putting out 17" IPS, I was hoping there might have been a change or some way to put one of those into a Sager. I really like everything about the sagers, but I wanted to experience an IPS screen. Having gone through the old posts, I got that feeling you mentioned - that perhaps the connections were different and so you couldn't put an IPS panel into a TN laptop. I wasn't sure if I was on the correct line of thought, so thank you very much.

kind of makes me sad, but it's not too bad I suppose. My last laptop didn't have IPS and was 15.6, so I imagine that any current display would be a general improvement.

I'm not even sure i want an IPS screen anymore. I wouldn't mind a better quality (90% NTSC) TN panel though.

Also, to quote a single post just hit "Reply" on the post in question. The "+Quote" button is to quote multiple, separate posts.

Nice, I will let you know when I get closer to buying. May be a little bit of time but if you still have it I'll be interested in it. Thanks

The xotic pc guy said to clean it with Compressed air even though it's brand new and said to re seat the cooler fan. Yeah ok I bet I do more harm than good trying that myself there's a ton of **** connected to the fan. Not sure how to look at their customer service right now not much help haha

You could give compressed air a shot. If you're not comfortable removing and reseating the CPU cooler you should let XPC know that. Do you know anyone that is familiar and comfortable with removing and reseating the CPU and would be willing to give you a hand? For the best results, once the cooler is removed, the existing thermal paste should be completely removed from the cooler and CPU and the proper amount (very little) of quality thermal paste should be reapplied before reinstalling it.

Like i said, if you don't feel comfortable or you don't have anyone that could give you a hand, i would call XPC and tell them so. You'll have to send the laptop in for warranty repair. Also, Sager laptops come with a 30-day money back guarantee (less shipping & handling). For warranty work or refund you'll have to pay shipping to get it to XPC/Sager, they pay shipping back to you i believe.

I recommend trying to get it fixed by warranty or a local knowledgeable person. The laptop is definitely worth it if you can get this issue resolved. Good luck.

As elwood suggested if you are not comfortable doing any of this let us know and we'll get it sent back to Sager. They will pay for shipping cost round trip and even do 3day guaranteed shipping instead of standard ground.

It does sound like something hardware related, or possibly something getting hit by the fan, like maybe a stray wire. There's not much we can do to fix that over the phone without you physically opening it up, or sending it back so Sager can. Since these are shipped to customers, it is possible something came loose during shipping.

I'd actually rather just try doing it myself since I don't feel like re shipping it. I work for UPS and I barely escaped them completely destroying this laptop. So, thanks for the help though everyone. Worse comes to worse I will call them up and have them talk me through it
