Yes you are correct... 8672 is the 17" model.. IPS displays should be available soon hopefully so if you want 17", you might have to wait..

It really is just the size difference. If you won't be mobile with it much and rather have the larger screen then the NP8672 is a good option.

Sorry for the late response...i've been enjoying my new baby. I love simple beauty and this is hands down the best looking laptop, IMHO, that i've ever owned. Not to mention, definitely the fastest. ;)

I was impatient and before any responses i talked with Josh at XPC and he stated that it was for mounting M.2 drives. I dug a little further and the service manual points out that the purple pad is indeed a thermal pad for an M.2 drive, the smaller foam piece is for support, and the black piece is a sheet of mylar which i assume is for shielding purposes.

On a side note, does anyone know if i can purchase an extended warranty through Sager/XPC. And if so, how much time do i have?

Glad Josh was able to take care of you. Yes you can add a warranty later, up to 90 days of its original ship date. Contact us, Josh could help with this, and we can get it added for you.

I just received this laptop yesterday. Definitely is a great build.

The only issue I am trying to solve right now is with the speakers. Only the sub woofer is putting out sound. The two speakers are not producing any sound at all. I am altering different settings to try and get it to come through but nothing yet. I opened it up as well and everything is where it is suppose to be.

    Any thoughts?

Did you install the OS yourself or was it preinstalled. You may want to go through and make sure all drivers and utilities are installed.

If all else fails you could check to make sure that the internal speaker ribbon is plugged in tight. It involves removing your keyboard but i don't think it should void your warranty (you have to remove the keyboard to access 2 of the 4 ram slots). I'm sure Hutsady could comment on that...

If it's a go, grab the service manual here and follow the steps to remove the keyboard. From the looks of the schematics, the speaker plug seems to be the one that's to the bottom right of the ram slots. If it's not noticeably loose and you decide to unplug/plug it for good measure, use the blue? pull tab and pull parallel to your laptop towards your screen then reinsert it. Reassemble and see if that solves the issue.

Question about screens, I've found an older screen that was introduced back in 2011 around the same time as the Chimei screen on the 8671/72, the
    AUO B173HW01 V.5 and AUO B173HW01 V.4 (Matte 72% gamut & Glossy 90%, respectably)
They have a 40pin LVDS connection and are well known replacement screens for ASUS G73 gaming notebooks.

I myself won't be getting an 8672 for another year or so, but was lurking around this post and realized the screens posted above might be relevant.

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/6343/avadirect-clevo-p170em-amds-hd-7970m-got-game/7
The AVADirect Clevo P170M matte screen is the Chi Mei N173HGE-L11 shipped with the Sager 8672 currently.
The AVADirect Clevo P170M Glossy screen is the AUO B173HW01 V.4
The Razer Blade 17.3" is a matte screen - AUO B173HW01 V.5 (confirmed in this link http://www.anandtech.com/show/5606/razer-blade-review/9)

Not too big of a difference, but something and a choice to add glossy screens perhaps?

This notebook sounds like a solid contender for my money. :) However, I can't find details about the RAID feature. It is a hardware based solution or is it just a software solution?

    Hi,

    I have a Clevo p670sg.

I just flashed to EC 1.03.04. It solved the stuttering issue I had with EC 1.03.03

However, I notice the CPU is running at 2.88 ghz instead of 3.4 when turbo boosted.

Is there a way to get it to run atleast 3.0 ghz and above ?

Just read through all 14 pages of posts. You have all sold me on the Sager NP8672
Thank you all for your interesting posts and information. My two questions are:
how warm does the bottom get when gaming? I wont be just using it on my lap but was just curious.
And how is the air exhuasted. Such as through the rear or through the sides.
    Thank you

Air is drawn in from the 3 fans under the laptop and exhausted out the two vents on each side of the laptop and one in the back. It's probably not a good idea to do any intensive usage with it directly on your lap. At a minimum, you should consider one of these.

I only use my laptop on the couch, on my lap so i ended up buying this. It definitely cools but the fan is quite noisy and you have to constantly unplug/plug the fan into the USB and deal with the dangling wire when it's not in use.

Edit: Check out HTWingNut's review of the NP8651 (the 15" version of the 8671) he includes surface temps under a load which should be similar to the NP8671.

    Hi,
Can you give some info on where you found new BIOS for it? was it officially announced? Or you used Prema Modded one?

I'm looking to upgrade ram from 8gb to 16gb. The amount of (mis)information in regards to the impact that ram clock speed & CAS latency has on a system is just insane. From what i gather, in terms of gaming, no matter the ram speed/latency, you will almost certainly never gain anymore than +1-2FPS in any game. Feel free to enlighten me if my few hours of research is incorrect.

That being said, when i do add another stick, i don't want to lose any FPS if the new stick forces lower clock speeds. The single 8gb chip that came stock with my 8671 is a samsung 1600 CL11. Big question is if i add another 8gb 1600 CL9, will the BIOS automatically lower both of the sticks frequency and run at CL9? Or will it run the new chip at 1600/CL11? Is there control over these settings in the BIOS to force the configuration either way?

Edit: Also, could someone please upload and link the 8671 user manual? Sager has not added it to their site yet and i keep forgetting to upload it when i'm home. Thanks

The lowest denominator. CL9 + CL11 will run at CL11, Can't make CL11 run like CL9 because it's not CL9 RAM. Same with the speed.

Well with an unlocked bios or xtu you could set them both to cl9 but you would be overclocking the cl11 sticks so there would be no guarantee of stability. Sub timings are also likely going to be a bit looser with two different sets of ram.

    Upgrading question:

I have the P670SE. Clevo's website shows the Intel® Core™ i7-4870HQ processor as an option, however it was not an option when I bought, and I still don't see it listed by Sager. I am very interested in this processor. Should this become available, is it possible to upgrade? This thread suggests it is not possible, however the service manual (2-13 and 2-14) suggests otherwise.

I don't think if any of CPU/GPU is upgradeable as they both are soldered on motherboard PCB. The only option to upgrade it is to get a new MB I'm afraid.

It's a soldered option from clevo that they offer to builders like sager, they either solder one chip on the motherboard or another. It would require a BGA soldering rig and the complete write off of warranty to replace,

Well, that is disappointing. Aside from planned obsolescence (which would just make it more likely that I'd shop elsewhere next time), why would a builder choose that as an "option"?

So let me make sure I'm understanding this correctly:
    1. Clevo builds a notebook that is physically upgradable, and describes in detail (pictures and all) how to swap out the CPU in their service manual.
    2. Before it can make it to the consumer, either Sager or Intel or Santa Claus says "no, we don't want the consumers to be able to switch out the processors, solder them please"
    3. Clevo solders the chip in, eliminating the possibility of upgrading or extending the lifespan of the computer.
    Call me naive, but wow.

Look at the size, weight, and price difference between a user-upgradeable laptop and one with soldered components... For instance, the Sager NP8671 vs. it's upgradeable big brother the NP8278-S:

    Sager NP8671 (Clevo P670SE) - Soldered $1299
    16.42" (w) x 11.30" (d) x 1.18" (h)
    6.83 lbs

    Sager NP8278-S (Clevo P170SM-A) - Upgradeable $1499
    16.22" (w) x 10.87" (d) x 1.64-1.79" (h)
    8.60 lbs

The Clevo P650/P670 was never designed or planned to be built as an upgradeable system, it's physically impossible to fit the sockets within the thickness of these chassis. If you look in the service manual at the processor installation and removal procedure (pg. 37), compare the 3 pictures. Picture A is what my CPU heatsink looks like, B is completely different and you can also see the CPU socket (the white plastic piece sticking out from under the heatsink on the left) in pictures B & C. There is no conspiracy by anyone, it seems to simply be an error in Clevo's service manual.

Yup, in the 8671 the battery isn't even removable. They focused on a slim design and affordability. I've never upgraded a CPU on a laptop, nor wanted to. I got exactly what I expected from this model.

It seems you´re mixing models. The P6xxSx have soldered cpu and gpu straight from the factory, and the service manuals don´t even mention how to swap the cpu.

It's a hard drive cage/bracket and they are stacked on top of each other. It can accommodate 2 2.5" hard drives but only one 9.5mm one. The other has to be 7mm. 2 9.5mm hard drives would stick out of the bracket and would probably not line up with the mounting screws and/or plugs.

I currently have an SSD as my OS drive and the stock 1TB as my backup (7mm stacked on top of 9.5mm) and they fit fine.

I assume you're purchasing an OS through the vendor you're using since Sager doesn't include an OS by default? I would make a note in the order asking them to install the OS on the SSD just to be sure.

If you want the SSD/HDD combo on the model in the SATA connections just put the SSD in the secondary bay. There is nothing that makes it a secondary bay, just a name assigned to it so everyone can be sure to be talking about the same bay. Sager will automatically install the OS to the SSD when present in the configuration.

I just got this computer 2 days ago and love it! It is super powerful and great! The only thing is that my Space Bar on my keyboard is not working how I feel it should. When i press on it, I have to press very hard and right in the middle for it to work most of the time. It is very annoying for me since I am very used to only hitting space with my right thumb, and not in the very middle of the space bar. Is anyone else having any issues with this too? Should I send it back and get the keyboard replaced?

Contact the reseller you purchased it from. Hopefully they just send you a replacement keyboard since it's easy to replace it yourself.

Often times this fixes itself with a bit of use. Just a matter of "breaking it in". I'd still definitely contact your reseller so they know it's an issue you had initially but tell them you're wanting to try it out for as long as you can to see if it starts working as it should. They should be able to get you an RMA setup and issued for you to use when you see fit, typically within 15 days of being issued.

Hi guys, first time posting here :) I just bought a Clevo P670SG with m.2 sata 256gb ssd, 16gb of ram, i7 4720hq @2.60 ghz and gtx 980m with 4gb

The system runs fine but I see constant stuttering during games, be them intensive or not. Shadow of Mordor, Witcher 2, Heroes of the Storm and League of Legends all suffer from some form of 1-2 sec fps drop at random times, I have Windows 8.1 x64, latest nvidia drivers and everything pretty much from stock. Bios version is 1.03.03 and the power supply is 180w.

Any clues to what is causing the stuttering?
