Get the 1080p IPS + GSync.. It will be good enough.. Too many scaling issues with 4k at 15.6" IMO..

Is there a way to use a custom image for the boot logo?

I don't think there are any programs that easily make a custom boot logo.

I recently got my laptop back from service from my local re-seller. They cleaned out my fans and replaced thermal paste with IC Diamond (the same since i get the laptop), and i'm still getting the 100C on CPU and my GPU throttles down. They also replaced my keyboard due to key stiffness, but they messed up in putting the red color film under the keyboard, i can see some areas where the white LED shows through. My fans are always spinning up and down and even idle the fans are loud. They also scratched up the aluminium on palm rest area... After my school course ends I guess I'm going to make them change my chassis.

Can you post some screenshots of graphs of temperatures and usage during gaming? It would be odd but maybe both heatsinks have suffered a heatpipe failure?

Hi, I've owned a P670RG/8678-S since March. It's performed flawlessly until the last month or so, where I'm having some GPU fan issues. Normally the laptop runs everything I toss at it with no issues; I use HWMonitor and MSI Afterburner to check my fan temps out of/in-game, and normally it never went about 80C, and in fact it often stays in the lower/mid-70s or less depending on how new the game is. This appears to be within the normal range of temps for the 980m, based on everything I've read in these forums and elsewhere.
Lately though I've had a couple of instances where I've noticed the GPU fans making a different noise, and when I've ended a game it looks like my GPU temps have gone up to 94C. In one instance, I realized too late (was wearing headphones) that it was happening and the system actually shut itself down.
I've opened the laptop once since this happened just to clean things out and saw nothing out of place inside. When I did that, I actually also turned the PC on and played one of the games that was causing issues while I had the bottom case off (had someone help me hold it upright so nothing was touching the ground) and the fans appear to operate normally, nothing obstructing them, no weird noise, etc. I have no reason to believe this is a physical issue or defect with the hardware.
In Control Center, I have always left my fans on the "automatic" setting - I'm not doing any overclocking or running benchmarks or anything so I didn't want to mess it it. The weird thing is, after some experimenting, this overheating originally appeared to happen if I shut off/rebooted the laptop (not just set it to sleep), as if the computer is not remembering the fan cooling setting in CC - normally if I noticed the 94C thing happened, I would just hit FN+ESC to get to the Control Center, click on a different setting than automatic, then back to automatic, and then the GPU fans would resume normal operation for hours at a time, normal temps during gaming (ie max 80C), etc., at least until the next time I powered the system off or rebooted.
However, I just had an instance of the 94C temp high again during a game, and when I went into CC to check on the fan setting, NONE of the fan settings were selected (ie none of the radio buttons had a white block indicating selection), which I found kind of alarming.
I've seen at least one other post on these forums showing someone else had the same issue in CC with there not being a fan setting selected - should I be checking to see if there's a newer version of CC to use? I haven't updated any drivers since I got the laptop in March. Outside of receiving Windows 10 updates, I have not futzed with any other drivers or settings. -

I would definitely try re-installing it or trying a different version, see if it helps with the fan control and temps. Let us know how it goes, and maybe check in with your reseller where the system came from to see if they have any suggestions as well.

It may be worth a re-paste too.

From properties in my computer: ControlCenter, version 5.0.0.27, date modified 9/24/2015
Hovering over the opened Control Center icon in the lower right part of Windows notifications shows it's version "Control Center v5.0000.0.21"? So that's different than looking at the file in the Windows folder too? Weird.
Task Manger also shows it's the 32-bit version of Control Center but I'm running W10 64 bit.

The driver number is red, though, compared to white for most of the others - what does that mean? -
Wondering are the new keyboards on the pascal refresh P670 compatible on the P670RG?
-
-
It should be possible since the size is the same, but maybe not the plugs sigh. The keyboard on the P670RG is so horrible.

What's wrong with p670rg keyboard? I'm planning on buying a used one. Anything I should know about it before I buy? Thanks.

Wondering if anybody had a SM951 NVMe M2 installed on P670SE/NP8671. BIOS on mine doesn't "see" cards at all. Looked for update BIOS but found nothing Any ideas or suggestions are more than welcome

I would like to know if it is possible to completely suppress the Intel Integrated Graphics on my system, and use only the NVIDIA GPU. Here are the things I have tried so far:
- Disabling Intel GPU in Device Driver (the system reverts to Microsoft Basic Display Driver).
- Examining BIOS for GPU selection options (I am using the stock BIOS, and no selections are available)
- Set global and application settings to "High-Performance NVIDIA processor" in NVIDIA driver, and power settings to "maximum performance"
My goal is for Windows 10 itself to be using the NVIDIA processor, but I have so far been unable to figure out how. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
On your model it's not possible as the IGP is hardwired to all the outputs.
If you truly disabled the IGP the machine would not be able to output to any display.
The 6th generation core i7 machines have a hardware switch you can use in the BIOS. -
Thank you Meaker for your response! I will stop beating my head against the wall on this and use my current work-around (external graphics cards) until it is time to retire these machines in a year or so. Thanks again.

Intel will support 3 displays in either all clone mode or all extended mode. But it seems to be unable to clone 2 and extend 1, which is what I need. I thought that the NVIDIA might provide more flexibility.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You could get a splitter for the displays you want to duplicate.
-
Yep, I have splitters and access to all of the high-end switching equipment one can imagine, as well as the techs who run it. I need to send out 2 separate signals to a switcher, as well as maintain my laptop display. So far I have been unable to "duplicate desktop on 1 and 2" while keeping the 3rd in extended. It just keeps popping out to extending the desktop across 3 displays. There is one other solution I haven't tried, which is to use an active MDP adapter. It is not really mission-critical at this point, since I have another solution in place. I was just curious if I could streamline things more. I like to use as few components as possible to minimize the potential points of failure. Thanks again for your input Meaker!
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Yes, you can't have the Intel drivers do both a duplicate and extend, this is a limit of the intel driver. So the duplicate has to be hardware based so an active duplicator should do it.
Also the latest machines in the series had a hardware mux switch built in for the internal display with the outputs routed to the dedicated GPU to help avoid this issue after users raised it. -
Hello everyone,
Just an update, I have had the Sager NP8672/Clevo p670 SG, for 2 years now. Bought from xoticpc.....running flawlessly....no over-heating issues. The CPU hits 98-99 degC, under benchmark like loads, but the laptop remains stable, some throttling. Never had it cut off on me..! Love it.
Question, how can I support NVMe drives on this laptop? Maybe a BIOS update?
I would love to get my hands on the Samsung 960 evo drives. What do you guys think? Recommendations?
Thanks...!!! -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Some people were managing to get them running plug and play if I remember. It's not officially supported of course.
-
BTW, you really need to repaste with ICD and fix those temps... They're too high and will harm your laptop in the long term..

Depends on the benchmark they are talking about, but a re-paste after a couple of years is not a bad idea.
-
Support.1@XOTIC PC Company Representative
Benchmarks could be higher. What are your temps in more real world uses? If they are still high, it might be worth looking at re-pasting (though it might still be within somewhat of the normal operating temperatures).

Hey guys so I have the clevo p670sg (980m). I want to do some upgrades and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Ok
1) so firstly I bought the laptop with Toshiba 1TB hybrid drive(9.5mm). I feel like the drive is wearing out. while I'm not seeing any in your face problems with the drive ( except maybe a slightly slower startup - could be due to applications) I used the seagate tools diagnostic on it and it passed the S.M.A.R.T check , and short generic check but failed the long generic check. So what would your suggestions be? I either want to completely replace it or maybe use it in combination with an ssd(if possible). Should I replace the Toshiba with a 7mm ssd + 7mm HDD? Or should I just get an M.2 ssd (SATA or PCIE NVMe ?) and possibly use it with my existing Toshiba drive? Also how would I go about re-configuring as obviously my windows(windows 7 OEM version) is already installed on the toshiba ( I would really prefer to keep my files, games, etc as well).
2) Is it possible to get a bigger battery in this laptop somehow ?Last edited: Dec 29, 2016 -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
1) A real SSD would help performance a lot so is certainly worth it over even the hybrid drive. I would get it to try and retire any bad sectors (fix them) and re-run the test, if it passes then grab an M.2 SSD (they are lighter and pretty similar in price) and clone your OS over to it (Macrium reflect is pretty decent) then use your SSHD as a data drive.
If it fails I would suggest looking into replacing it and reporting it to your reseller if under warranty.
2) There are no larger internal battery options and no official external battery options. -
It's not running out of the box for me. Intel 600p drive. Can't boot from it (Even updated BIOS from PremaBIOS), though running fine as a data drive after booting OS. -
Has anyone done a Liquid Metal repaste on these machines? Liquid Ultra for example? Ar the processor and GPU "delidded"?
edit: Just cleaned out my system. There was a lot of accumulated dust. Temps for CPU dropped to 88 degC, stable under load. Intel XTU, stress test loads at 94degC. Will update, if I re-paste.Last edited: Mar 1, 2017 -
I am considering a re-pasting job. Would you know if the CPU and GPU on this board are delidded? I'd imagine them to be so, since they are integrated with the MOBO. I realize using Liquid Ultra is risky, but I think I might give it a try.
Thanks -
-
It should work real well, as long as you stay clear of the non copper surfaces. I haven't tried it because I'm upgrading to a P775. Maybe I should practice on my old P670? Hehe..
-
Did a successful repaste with Liquid Metal TIM (Thermal Grizzly conductonaut) on my P670SG. The results are amazing.
Before (IC Diamond, 2 year old) -
Prime95 small batch test (Max heat generation) max temp hit 99degC within a few seconds, had to shut it off.
GPU Stress test (Aida64) max temp 88degC
After liquid metal -
Prime95 small batch test (Max heat generation) max temp hit 81degC, stable 10 minute run.
GPU Stress test (Aida64) max temp 71degC.
Guide by @iunlock was incredibly detailed.

That is a really good drop in temperatures after re-pasting. Glad to see that it took care of the heating issues.

Indeed, very nice. Paste can dry after a time, especially if it's thermally cycled hard.

What is your idle temps for CPU? I also repasted mine with arctic silver 5 and I'm getting 45C idle and 95C with Prime95 small batch test (Max heat generation) -

Hey there. Proud owner of this Sager laptop here.
Wondering if anyone has a link or pdf of the manual to this laptop. (Not a manual for replacing parts) I swore I saw some link that had a perfect manual, but I can't find it again. (That's how i learned about the Fn+1 for max fans)
Thank you,

Have you checked what's available in our download section?

Hi there Meaker. If you're talking about the official Sager website, then yes, I have checked. Only driver downloads. No manual for the controls of the laptop.
Thank you!

I was wondering, how OCable is the 670SE / 650SE? I mean there is no VBIOS for the GPU so it should be limited or what are the options here?
