nyuck, nyuck, nyuck. my wife wants to know if we actually have anything better to do ... anyway, my room is at 72F and THE LAPTOP is idling at 115F when in Firefox 7. Do any of you know why the new Firefox is making the GPU run a bit hotter than before. it used to not make any difference at all.

I just learned why Firefox 7 is heating up my laptop. There is an option to use the hardware acceleration, if available. I unchecked that box and now it runs much cooler! I have not noticed any speed difference in Firefox. I used this for reference:

Things move along fast in this forum.... but some of you might still remember the display issue that I was having with my laptop a few weeks back. After going back and fourth with sager they finally said the issue was LCD banding which (they say) cannot be fixed unless I upgrade to a higher color gamut LCD.

My question is, can this really make that big of a difference? Is it worth upgrading or is the display faulty and should I push for a free replacement? As it is this banding problem bugs the hell out of me and sagers unwillingness to help isn't making things better, but if I have to live with it I guess I will...

Still I don't see how a few-month-old laptop can be sold with such a inferior screen and no one notices!

hei as you said, it is free, so why not :D

for me, most of the time my 8170 is using external screen.

it is hard to go back to stock sreen after you are being pampered with 2560x1600 matte ips lcd screen with 117% gamut screen :D

hehe i dont see a reason to use a external screen for a laptop computer, that pretty much just breaks the benifits of having it transportable :) and its possible to get a pretty good panel for it :D but okay if you really use the resolution 2560x1600, then i might understand :) but a 100%+ gamut is only truly usefull for photographers and people doing photo and video work! for gaming and everyday use its not needed :)

for ajbutch: I would suggest that you push for a replacement panel, actually the stock Hannstar panel is a very good quality panel! if it works ;) it wouldnt be a significant cost for Sager to give you one that works well!
The fact is that you have a panel that doesnt work 100% like it should out of the box, and that is what you have paid for... so the "law" is on your side here... cause there is a thing called warranty!

    Delpan...

Here is how I use 2 external monitors plus my laptop screen. When I need to hit the road I just grab my laptop and off I go, but in the office using multiple monitors is way more productive.

This is an old picture, can anyone identify the laptop?

Too new, and not the correct ODM. I hate to admit, but I don't remember what the blue button did right now, but it may come to me.

Hint: You can't see the magnesium alloy LCD Cover

@donald - how i wish i coudl do the same for my 8170. the lack of the express card only allow me to use either the dvi port or the hdmi port only :(

btw, is it possible to multiple use the dvi and the hdmi port at the same time??

that way i could have 2 screen side by side on at the same time, 3 if you included the laptop screen too.

Pro-star would still be a Clevo shell.

It is one of our old PowerPro models, so it is a different ODM.

Please check with your reseller to make sure you have the latest bios-EC on your system. The latest EC does address the fans, as to when they go on and such. :)

Awesome cause I have the 6970m with silver 5 but as the fans don't kick in till it's really hot im getting a bit worried and the only way for now is to use the fn + 1 option. I brought it through a bto in Japan so not quite sure if they would have a bios for it other than the original.... However I do know that it uses the clevo bios. Can you point me to the right direction??

AIDA64, CPu-Z, Sandra are wrong! There are no such DDR3 SDRAM frequencies like 851MHz, 765MHz, etc. These are not JEDEC frequencies, just a blsht thing or something like that.

If you receive a new item that is unsatisfactory/faulty out of the box, there should be absolutely no question in your mind that the company is responsible for this and should replace the part at no charge. They should do the same as well during the entire warranty period.

However, depending on the warranty, you may be responsible for the charges to ship the defective machine back to the manufacturer, in this case Sager. The stock Hannistar (came with mine) is just fine btw.

If you receive a new item that is unsatisfactory/faulty out of the box, there should be absolutely no question in your mind that the company is responsible for this problem and should replace the part at no charge. They should do the same as well during the entire warranty period. As I've said before, a company is not supposed to sell an item or a combination/configuration of items that cannot work together correctly. They are supposed to test all the configurations they offer PRIOR to sale to ensure it all works together correctly.

However, depending on the warranty, you may be responsible for the charges to ship the defective machine back to the manufacturer, in this case Sager. TO THAT, my expectation IN THIS CASE would be that they pay ALL the shipping, since a company that puts together computer elements is expected to know what they are doing - certainly one of Sager/Clevo's reputation should. Putting components together that don't work should be considered a separate issue and different from receiving a product with components that go bad when they arrive with the end user (DOA). Putting together componens that can't function correctly shows that they did not perform due diligence in testing each combination they proposed to retail. If they had, they would have seen the banding produced with this combination of screen and other components. Nobody would buy a computer in person with banding on the screen! You as a customer are expecting the retailer to provide you with a quality product, to have your best interests in mind, and therefore to test your product prior to sending it out to you.

Having said all of this, can you remind me which screen and configuration you got? Maybe you could place it in your siggy for future reference? :)

If more than 2 months for sure you need this... :)

I have all the latest bios package (I think) and when I use the FN + 1 key the fans are at 100% but every few seconds the fan dips in speed, but only for a split second. Why is that? Anybody else have that problem? It would be nice if the fans stayed at 100% and didn't lose any rpm's. It's almost like a surge. It's annoying ;(

That split second is the EC doing its job, which is basically it checks to see if it needs to do any fan speed changes, it detects that it does, and then goes "ohh i'm in override mode" and keeps them spun up. Yea its annoying but thats the way its programmed if they changed how it was done then the fan wouldn't react quite as fast to temp changes.

If yours is from March 2011, an update would be good. These updates should be given out by your reseller, or they may tell you to go to the Clevo bios thread here on the forum.

They would have your serial number and what you would need in your case. Sager for one does not like to post these for a public download.

In some cases they do so, for example the 7280, 7282 models. :)

I guess I will weigh in on the BIOS issue:

Would our resellers kindly post the recommended BIOS revision number (for your models). I cannot understand the reason that we cannot see clearly on this forum what is recommended at this time.

I checked the Clevo BIOS updater thread on this board, and the terse notes accompanying each item did not give me a warm fuzzy, (ie. "However, this EC/KBC suffers from some serious bugs so it is not recommended to install.") YIKES!

Given that doing this wrong could "brick" the machine, I want to tread real lightly on this turf.
