It should work fine in all models, but it can only run on two slots with two sticks, not all 4 slots (or it'll downclock to 1333).

    From the manual:

Can CPU Z identify the stepping of the chipset? I am trying to figure out if my np8170 has the sandy bridge chipset flaw.

    Hello all,

I just received my P170HM and would like to know if it is possible to add a third harddrive ? Normally I think not by default , but I could remove the dvd-drive.

    Any suggestions ?

If you buy a bracket, you can indeed add a 3rd HDD into the optical bay.

Can I order just the HDD caddy for the ODD from you guys at Malibal, and if so, am I able to put the bezel from the CD on the caddy tomake it look stock. I just don't use the optical drive that much and would like to have a third hard drive.

Hey Wingnut. I have had some success with overclocking but I'm still worried about the whole warranty thing. Can I ask how you know if overcocking itself will not void the Sager warranty.

    Thanks.

Well! This is fun. I have removed both my 750gb HDDs and put in a spare120gb drive only. I have just loaded Linux Mint 11. Works perfectly. Recognized the wireless card and also the GTX485M with acceleration. I don't care for the Gnome interface so I am going to download the OpenSuse KDE version and try that out. The memory footprint for Linux is 800+MB vs. the 2.5gb for windows 7. However, Linux has a long way to go to run the software I use and it is just for fun that I load it. I am unable to run temps or benchmarks for this load. I believe that OpenSuse will have a good system info that will tell me the temps. My office in my home is at 78F

Update 1: Just loaded OpenSuse 11.4 KDE version. Works OK. Not as user friendly as Mint. Wireless was a pain to get going. Not sure if I can get GTX485 support. Will have to try Ubuntu. Temps are around 102F.

Update 2: Just loaded Ubuntu 11.4 and like it very much. They have a unique way of loading software and also the desktop is a new novel approach. It recognized the GTX485M and wireless was effortless.

@Malibal #2, thank you for the superfetch info. How do we stop superfetch or is it built in? I have 16gb so it's not really a problem, just would like to know what my actual memory footprint is. I had 8gb in the G73 and idled around 1.5gb used, now with 16gb, Idling around 3gb used. Is this due to superfetch technology?

Update 3: Ahhh, back to Win7, feels good. This was the first time I opened the laptop. I really like the quality and it seems to be better than the innards of the G73 which is a very well made laptop. Just "popped"my two 750s back in and off I go. Now I have a fun "toy" to play with in the Ubuntu Opsys.

One thing about Ubuntu, it will boot up from when the power button is pushed to when the hard drive activity light stops blinking at about a minute. With my Windows 7 and all the stuff I have loaded, its around 5 minutes to no drive activity light blinking. That is how I time my bootup times. And also 0% CPU usage.

Believe it or not, it's a good thing that Windows is using that much memory. It's due to Superfetch, where Windows tries to load your commonly used programs in to memory to save on access times. It's not using 2.5GB because it's needed- it's using it to save you time. If you disable superfetch, it should drop back down quite a bit.

Quick google for a bit of extra reading on the subject:

Behind the Windows 7 memory usage scaremongering

For some reason Microsoft never really made this common knowledge, so people still wonder why Vista/Win7 are "memory hogs".

Ask the hundreds of people here over the years if their warranty was ever rejected because of "overclocking" (software overclocking). It will be a resounding NO. Bottom line is Sager won't explicitly say "it's ok to overclock", but they don't say you can't either. It's impossible (well not impossible, just cost prohibitive) to prove a GPU failed from software overclocking. GPU's fail from overheating or pushing voltage too high, which so far I haven't seen a way to increase voltage, and GPU's can fail from overheating while running at normal clocks.

If there was clearly hardware tampering to overclock then they would probably not warrant the GPU, but the rest of the machine would be warranted still.

If you're still concerned, then don't overclock.

Ok, so my Sager NP8170-S1 arrived today. I am having a few issues.

#1 I cannot get the audio to sound decent. I read in the manual and in some posts here that FN+F5 should turn on enhanced mode. All FN+F5 does is make the audio go lower. I installed the Realtek app from the driver disk and installed it from a link posted here to filehippo. It's set to stereo in the application. But it still sounds like junk. I set it to 5.1 and did a test and nothing is playing when it does the sub test. Could it be disabled somehow?

#2 I installed the Creative EAX software but not really sure what to do with it. Is it related to the FN+F5 thing at all?

#3 I cannot update the video driver. I installed the ATI drivers from the disc it came with and that was fine. It's showing version 8.810.0.0 12/8/2010 ATI Technologies. However when I try to download the latest drivers from ATI's website, the program tells me "ati catalyst mobility cannot be downloaded due to incompatible hardware/software on your computer" I'd like to put the most recent drivers on the machine and not some from 2010.

#4 I was reading in this thread that FN+F1 should change the fan speed. It doesn't. For me it disables the touchpad. I'm wondering if I got a model different than what everyone else got??

    Here's the config I ordered:

Restart the computer, then do the Fn+5. You should then notice a large difference.

Also, you must leave Realtek on Stereo, for it to work properly.

Well i downloaded and installed the NVIDIA DRIVERS 275.33 WHQL, and it totally screwed up the rainy areas of crysis 2 just like the last beta update did. If you own crysis 2, play a raining level on the new drivers. The colors are completely screwed up due to the rain effects! For shame Nvidia!

I rolled back my drivers and await a fix.

-New status: Phase 3 (Sent for Additional Customization / Custom Painting / Skinning Department)
Wonder how long sager to xotic shipment, then how long for them to upgrade 4gb ram to 8gb :)
Anyone know how long expedited shipping is from Xotivc to Canada ?

-My crucial ssd came in :)
I picked up the box and had an hmmmmm moment, never had ssd before and the package was so light I thought that I could've been riped off by post office or something, as I thought by the weigth nothing was in it.
Grabbed an Iphone and started filming opening the box, so I can have evidence if something :)
Damn ssd's are too light :)

I used the laptop in the backyard to watch a movie while we worked. It was heard even from the garage in the front. I use the VLC media player and set it to 2+2 speakers and FN+5, way loud. I thought it was turned up too much and might damage the speakers.

Sorry I'm new here, but why isn't the 8170-S1 offered anymore? I know it's just a discounted upgrade configuration of the standard 8170, but none of the resellers seem to stock them anymore. If the 8150-S1 is any indication, then an 8170-S1 could save me money on my desired configuration.

The P170HM / 8170 base configuration was basically turned into the same starting configuration that the P170HM-S1 / 8170-S1 had. That's why the S1 on this model was discontinued at this time.

The S-1 series on any Sager or Clevo system is a special package deal that could be only for a short time or in some cases like the x7200-NP7280-NP7280 it can last a long time.
It is best to send your configuraton to a reseller and see what they can do for you... :)

Sorry guys but im still getting horrible freezes, i have no idea whats causing it :s, normally when the laptop freezes it unfreezes again after a min or so, sometimes i get a blue screen and have to hard reboot the notebook.

When it is freezing the hard drive led button (above keyboard) keeps flashing constantly so i think its doing something its not suppose to be doing :s.

Any idea what is causing this? The laptop came pre-installed with everything (windows 7, graphic card drivers, etc etc).

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Try uninstalling the Intel RST drivers, if you've installed them. They were causing hard-drive-based hangs for me.

I'm planning on re-paste my Sager as soon as it get to my hands.

For what i could find, IC Diamond Compound is the best option nowadays, right?
How much I need to get the job done, 1.5gr enough or 4.8gr tube?

Hello all.. I am considering this Model laptop.. I previously had an alienware and had a lot of problems with it. So the reason I am hear is to find out reliability regarding this brand. I will be honest and a while ago I have heard that Sager/Clevo had some reliability issues how ever I figured I would ask here.

Also to MALIBAL & babyhemi I would be curious to hear from you about how warranties work any anything else I should know if I bought from one of you.

Thanks in advance to anyone that replies to my post. I am really scarred from my experience with Dellienware and hope to purchase a system with minimal problems.

    Regards

Hi, under our standard 3 year Labor 1 Year Parts Warranty, everything is covered for the first year, including all shipping costs (both ways). After the first year on the standard warranty, you will also receive 2 additional years of free labor on any service work that you might need.

If you select the 2 year or 3 year Parts and Labor Warranty that we offer, you will receive full parts and labor coverage (including all shipping) for 2 or 3 years - except for the ac adapter and the battery. Those are only covered for a max of 1 year. Note: Sager has the same policy.

One last thing. Our warranty is backed by us and also a major Clevo importer, so you can be certain that your investment is fully protected.

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact us via phone, email, chat or PM and we'll be glad to provide additional information! :)

    1. Why the price for upgrading to 6970m and gtx 485m increased from 560m it should be reduced right?

    2. For the Free ram Upgrades to 6gb/8gb how long will u resellers add to build time may i know? Are u giving 6 gb or 8 gb?

GTX 560 is much worse when compared to either GTX 485 or HD 6970, as it is only a minor upgrade from GTX 460.

What he means is that upgrade from 560gtx to 6970 is $345 and to 485 is $595, which is a lot more that what the upgrade cost was few days ago.

Prices haven't increased, it's that the GTX 560M is $100 cheaper than the 460M was.

The savings just aren't being passed on to the buyer.

Yes it is. Just expect it to run at USB 2.0 speeds.

Yep, they're totally backwards compatible. As Mr Mysterious pointed out though, you won't get any speed benefit from it. You'll still be limited to 480Mbps USB 2.0 speeds due to the device itself. If you went with a USB 3.0 device, the transfer speeds bump up to around 5Gbps.

Just putting my feelers out there. Anyone interested in buying my NP8170 as configured shown below for $2000US (no trades) shipped to CONUS:

    i7-2720QM
    GTX 485m
IC Diamond thermal paste (seems to be stock now)
Stock 17" 1920x1080 screen with matte protector
    8GB DDR3 1333MHz
    Seagate Momentus 750GB 7200RPM
Blu-Ray reader / DVDRW combo drive
    Intel 6300 Wi-Fi (no bluetooth)
2 year Sager Warranty (effective starting June 2011 i.e. now)
    No Operating System

This machine has been lightly used. It is out for the motherboard swap for the Intel SATA controller recall, due back hopefully end of this week. Sager is resetting the full warranty to the date of the motherboard swap, which is why the warranty starts now, even though I received the laptop in February.

I am interested in selling since my needs have changed a bit, but doesn't make much sense personally for me to sell for much less than $2000. This same config costs over $2300 if configured at a Sager reseller. I know it might be a stretch, but someone looking to save $300-$350 that wants the nVidia GPU over the AMD, it could be a bargain. Comes with all factory stuff, case (not used at all), AC adapter, manual, DVD's, and full two year warranty.

    PM me if interested. Thanks.

No you shouldn't have these problems and your seller should have it RMA'd back to him. I would insist on that.
