Yes, it sounds like a fault with the power connection on the mainboard, or with the adapter itself. You could have your reseller try to send you a replacement power adapter before having to send the whole unit in, but obviously if that doesn't work, they'll have to swap out the guts of it.

Thanks. I don't always 100% believe manuals because a lot of times it's just the typical response or "safe" supported option. I'll have to take a peek and see if it may be possible. Obviously considering a 1TB HDD.

@Kevin_Jack2.0 sorry to hear about your problems. Hope it's an easy and quick fix.

I was able to "shove" a 12.5 mm HDD into an ASUS and would sure like to get dual 1tb 7200 drives. But I don't think they make them yet

Take your pick: Intel X25-M, Samsung 470 are my top choices (have an Intel right now), then there'd be Corsair and OCZ.

A couple of questions: Has anyone on here overclocked the Nvidia 470m GPU? If so what settings have you used? And the big question is: by doing this will I void my warranty?

Overclock and find out. Just take it one step at a time.

And no you won't void your warranty.

How easy is it to upgrade this system? Once I replace my G73 I'd like a system that allows easy access to all the components (CPU, GPU, WiFi, Ram, OD, HDD, etc...). Is the 8170 that machine?

Is there a take-apart or some pic of the bottom cover removed?

    Cheers,

Yes, very easy. You can open up and remove and replace all of your removable components (like in your list) in less than 30 minutes.

Yep, all components are simple to get to. Just remove a few screws to access nearly everything. No special tools needed other than a screwdriver. Replacing parts won't void your warranty (on the other parts) either- though obviously the new parts aren't covered by the machine warranty :)

There are pics and links to the relevant documentation on threads all over this forum for it as well. (search may not do you as much good as google and "" around search terms)

I replaced yesterday my DVD-RW with a Blu-Ray rewriter. DVD out, front panel (bezel) of the DVD, front panel off the Blu-Ray, front panel on the Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray in. Done in 20 mins. The DVD-RW has gone into an external DVD enclosure.

A while ago I replaced the screen. Taking it easy say 1H

And first thing I did, was adding the second Hard Drive. 1/2H.

    So yes, it is easy.

Thank you all for such prompt responses. I'm glad to hear it. After researching Alienware I came back very disappointed (and so over-priced on top of it) so I'm glad the Sager/Clevo is very easy to work on.

Now I just need to find someone who bought the 8170 with ATI 6970 but now needs some cash and wants to trade for my G73! :)

    Thanks again.

Nice choice ! That's exactly the one I have in my P170HM too ! I was tempted by the Vertex3 and Crucial new M4 but opted for this old 34nm technology instead, very satisfied so far !

Btw could some HD6970m owners tell me at what speed your GPU is running on idle with Win7 aero enabled ? Mine never goes lower than 250MHz/Core and 900MHz/mem and between 55°C-60°C on idle even after MX-4 reapplied ... before MX-4 I hitted 97°C while gaming SC2 and after I never go beyond 85°C but still my idle temp seems high ...

    thanks !

    Just got mine last night

    Specs:
    Default screen
    Default cpu (2630)
Default ram (4 gigs) - will upgrade this later if i ever need to
    Ati 6970
    Stock thermal paste
Primary HDD (crucial m4 64gig, got it for $87 with tax, i was not paying whatever xotic's ssd prices were)
Secondary HDD (the default 320gig@7200rpm hdd, it's a seagate)
    wifi intel 6230
3 year warranty (i've had to RMA my previous sager laptops)

    The flaws I've noticed
-The vertical viewing angles of this screen are pretty bad, as noted by other people. It's not bad when i'm sitting at a desk, but when i'm lying down in my bed I can see distortion in the corners of the screen. My previous Sager with 5 year old LCD technology didn't have this issue. I might get a new screen when the do it yourself screen swapping is more stream lined. Though I do believe some guy posted a thread about him installing his own screen?
-I was hoping this would be quieter than my previous sager (5760), but it's about the same noise level at idle. I know that the asus g73 is really quiet, but i didn't want to get an asus. I do have some AS5 paste I can use to see if that'll help.
-I have that max fan speed problem. When I toggle the max fan speed on, they run at full speed for 5 seconds, then for half a second they slow down, only to speed back up, and that cycle continues. This isn't that big of a problem as when I turn my fans on to full blast I'll have ear buds in.
-My space bar doesn't have as good of tactile feel as the other keys. My previous sager had the rubber membrane keyboard with the plastic x contraption and whenever something would get stuck under a key, the key press wouldn't feel right, and this is how my 8170's space bar key feels.

I forgot to bookmark useful threads, so do anyone have threads for optimizing and setting up this laptop?

    I did tweak my sdd
    I plan on using hwinfo

Are there threads on the BIOS versions and the AMD catalyst control center? Or any other useful programs?

Also what benchmark program should I d/l to see if my laptop works under stress?

I think my wifi shuts off after every restart. And to turn it on i have to use fn+ f11, is there a way to have it always on?

Is there a thread on screen calibration?

Fan : I have it too and Clevo don't let the user play with fan settings neither trought BIOS or program as far as I know

    to update Catalyst to 11.5 : http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...fficial-whql-drivers-11-5-11-5a-released.html
and read it until the end before doing it

Programs : any benchmark : Prime95, Furmark, PCmark Vantage and the other %mark which I don't remember at this moment

Wifi on startup : maybe in the BIOS as I know Bluetooth can be set there

    Calibration :

    1. Reducing blue-tine on LCD panels (coldness) in windows 7

    a. Right click on an open desktop area then select screen resolution by left clicking
    b. Left click on Advanced Settings
    c. Left click the Color Management tab
    d. Left click the color management button
    e. Left click the advanced tab
    f. Left click on calibration display
    g. Left click next on the Welcome to Display Color Calibration screen
    h. Left click next on the set basic color settings screen
    i. Left click next on the hot to adjust gamma screen
    j. You may adjust or leave it as default (recommended) then click next on the adjust gamma screen
    k. Left click skip brightness and contrast adjustment
    l. Left click next on how to adjust color balance
    m. Select the blue slider bar with the mouse, sliding it all the way to the right then use the keyboard left arrow key to move the slider right to left till the blue tint is lowered to your liking.

This will reduce the blue tint and give you a warmer color temperature
    -----------------------------------

and since you have the same specs than my P170HM could you check your HD6970m temps and clock with HWiNFO32 for me ? (see the post just before yours)

and btw it's been a long time since I saw that Magic The Gathering card ! what was it ? Force of Nature ? if I remember it was like 7/7 or 8/8 with trempling ... nice memories !

You should take a look at prime95 for the CPU and Furmark for the GPU. Download HWmonitor or Everest to watch your temperatures while running either program, that'll give you an idea of how hot your computer gets. :)

Also, for the wifi, I believe there is an option in the BIOS to turn it on automatically.

    xotic pc

i was burned by pctorque in 03-05 with the ATS warranty (not going to use them)
powernotebooks is run by a guy who it pretty judgmental (he would have probably been my best choice since they are based in nevada and it would take less time to ship it to me since i didn't want to pay CA tax, xotic is based in nebraska)
all the others mythlogic/lpc/malibal are clevo resellers I believe? i got burned again by a clevo reseller, flawlessnotebooks, so i'm not doing that again, even if those others i listed have a much much much more established reputation

so that narrowed my list down to xotic pc or sager, and xotic had better prices so it was an obvious choice from there

i paid by check and mailed it to them, and i had to have them ship it from ca to nebraska back to ca to avoid sales tax (i live about 45 miles from sager hq)

it took 4 business days to build it

i placed my order on May 4th, i received it may 26th

Wifi stays on after a reset. I guess it's because i just recently installed the drivers and didn't restart this laptop that much.

Is this what you wanted? I'm not too familiar with this program. I just have firefox open with a few tabs.

Our warranty is backed by us and also a Clevo importer who has been in business for 20+ years, so our customers have just as much warranty protection as someone who purchases a Sager branded Clevo laptop.

Also, you said you got burned by a Sager reseller and also a Clevo reseller, so please don't try to stigmatize all Clevo resellers, based on your one experience with a Clevo reseller who never had a long established reputation.

OK. I went and tried my hand at overclocking my 470m. Downloaded MSI Afterburner. Seems pretty easy to use. So far I have been able to max out my core and shader clock speed. 695 MHz on core and 1390 MHz on shader. Everything is stable with no artifacts. Temperature when gaming has not gone up much at all. Maxing out at 63 C on my GPU. Gained about 7 FPS when playing Rift on Ultra. I have not messed around with the memory speed yet. Going to leave the setting here for now and see how it goes.

Still curious: Anyone have a solution for when I plug my laptop into my TV via HDMI, it's a bit zoomed in on my TV, but not my laptop. How about WiDi? Will it work on my laptop? Anyone think it's worth it? I heard copyrighted stuff won't work on it. Lastly, what's the word on those new 3D capable screens?

Sounds like your ATi card is overscanning. Go to Catalyst Control Center, search for "overscan" (I think it is in My Digital Flat-Panels). Adjust the overscan to 0. Make sure you TV is also set to its pixel for pixel mode (no overscan). This has always solved the problem for me with all of my ATi cards.

Hey guys, just got my clevo and its a beast! Even the screen is amazing ;) but i seem to have a problem. It freezes for like a min or so after windows 7 started.

I have the drivers that came on the cd, any idea if they are the latest? Or do you guys have a program for me so i can check if there are updates to my drivers?

Not only that but RAM is so inexpensive these days, what's another $70 on top of a $2000+ machine?

I now see that 1600mhx memory is available for our laptop. Is this also available to run in my (mar 2011) laptop or was there a motherboard update?
