For those interested the 6970 will be +245 from the 460M

Hey what sleeve are you guys using? I'm looking to buy one that goes well with the rubber finish =]
-
i wonder if customer able to buy the card + heatsink alone for NP8150 and install for themselves? -
interesting to see how the thermals of the 6790/heatsink perform especially on a 15inch...

Well Xoticpc told me they could look into the possibility of getting me the individual cards. But it would have to be later because now Sager would most understandably be focusing on the full machines.
However the prices could vary due to availability and stuff. Hope Justin can clarifyAnyway guys, how much do mobile gpu's actually cost? I hear the go up to 1500$, which is as good as a new laptop!

-
hey does anyone know of any new BIOS releases?
-
-
Can I clarify whether the 6970M has been officially released by Sager?
I know the US resellers has open up orders for it.
But the Sager website has not reflected this option. -
Just curious: Is it possible to attach the Intel SSD 310 80Gb with PCIe/mSata at the empty slot of the 3G/HSPDA modem of a Clevo P150HM ??

EDIT: The 3G slot is connected via USB2 as stated on the system block diagram of the P150HM service manual and therefore not suited for the SSD. -
I ordered my 8150 on 3/23; will it come with the latest drivers pre-installed or will I have to do that myself?
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
^^ Sager will usually install the latest certified drivers from their website.
-
-
So I not sure whether they will allow me to place an order for 8150 w/6970M if Sager website itself does not reflect this option at all. -
Norwegian Clevo-dealer Multicom just sent my order, which is containing the 6970M. I can't stop shaking!
-
Is it worth buying NP8150 with AMD 6970m(100euro over 460m), I play games just occasionally(SC II, NFS Shift, Dirt2), most of the time surfing web and working with MS office. And if I choose the 6970m, I will have to take almost the cheapest configuration (2630qm, 6970m, just 2gb ram!, 320gb HD) because it's over my budget.
I wonder how much noise does 6970m make when idling and how the battery life is compared with the 460m. -
-
Compromise on everything else, because that stuff you can upgrade later for very little money. -

I'll wait for like 6 months - 1 year until the price for the 6970M comes down before I'll buy it separately, ship it to my reseller, and buy the PSU to have him install it in my 8130.
Mr. Mysterious -
I received my P150HM from Mythlogic on Monday. Since the machine has been well reviewed at this point, I'll just share a few things that stand out to me. In short, I am extremely pleased and happy with my purchase. I have owned two Alienware machines prior to my last Clevo and it's good to be back.
1. Mythlogic. The computer was packaged very well. It was in a box, inside of a box, inside of another box with packing material. The computer booted fine on first try, all the windows updates were installed, a comprehensive set of benchmarks were pinned to the desktop, and the screen was color calibrated. The only minor hiccup was that my second HDD was not showing up, so I called Mythlogic and simply reseated it. It must have shifted loose during shipping, because it showed up after that and was already formatted and ready to go.
2. The Screen. The 95% color gamut matte screen is a real beauty. My last two laptops were 17 inch Alienware machines with CCFL LCDs. What a difference today. It was a bit of a leap of faith for me both to downsize to a 15.6 inch monitor and to switch to a matte screen from glossy. I was worried about losing some image sharpness and feeling cramped. I am so glad I did it! The screen is perfect for me. I feel much less eye strain after use, the image is clear and gorgeous, and I can use it in any room of the house at any time of day. I am extremely impressed with the brightness too. I use it on the second lowest setting while in in fully lit rooms. Cranking it up to full power is like looking at the sun, LOL.
3. Form factor and finish. The rubberized coating is a little stickier than I would prefer, although it has its advantages. It really does not show fingerprints or smudges at all, though it will catch dust easily. I simply keep a Swiffer dusting cloth in my bag and give it a gentle swipe and it picks it up well. The compact size and weight for this machine is great considering what is packed inside. I have no real complaints about the chicklet keyboard, its flex, or the touchpad. It all feels perfectly comfortable for me. I do miss the backlit keyboard on my Alienware M17, which even though was not spectacular, really helps to find keys when playing at night.
4. The Corsair C300 is really nice. Fast boot times!
5. Sound. Not something I would ordinarily care about since I usually play games with headphones, but this was a pleasant surprise. The sound is loud, and clear. This is nice because the fans do kick up to keep the thing cool.
6. Temperatures. Seriously? Only mid to high 70's on the GPU while heavy gaming? Wow. On my Alienware M17, I resorted to taking the screws out of the bottom plate and affixing velcro to it so that I could easily peel it off and then sit it on a cooler when gaming to keep the GPUs from hitting 90. Nicely done, Clevo.
7. Battery Life. Another pleasant surprise. I've never had a gaming laptop that got over two hours of battery while using productivity type software. A nice little bonus. While optimus would be great, this is still good.
8. External Bluray drive. Okay, this is my one area of disappointment. I opted for two hard drives, and therefore, I'm forced to use an external Bluray drive in a caddy. It is extremely fickle. I was trying to install games like The Witcher and Neverwinter Nights 2, and it would consistently complain that the autorun and/or setup files were incompatible with 64 bit. I know these games install fine on other Windows 7 and Vista 64 bit machines. This drive simply demands a very particular order, being connected prior to a fresh boot, and then it only sometimes decides to work. There are times when it won't even detect a disk in the drive, and would not even read the disks provided with the computer without a fresh boot. I don't know if it is a poor LG driver issue or what. I do know that the LG firmware update program does not impress, since it doesn't seem to work and you can't close the window once it starts without killing it through the task manager. Mythlogic was prompt and helpful using online chat here, and they answered some questions and got me going enough to get my software installed eventually, but it is more of a hassle than it should be to use it.
All in all, I am really happy with this machine! Mythlogic has been great to deal with and I can fully recommend them. -
Hello Everyone,
I was going back and forth between the Sager NP8170 & the Asus G73SW-A1. I finally decided to get the Sager but I have some questions that need answers before I can fully say "This is the Laptop I'm gona get":
1- What's the difference between Sager NP8170 & NP8170-S1 if both were customized exactly the same? Is there a difference in cost?
2-Which screen so you recommend? Going through the posts it seems the "Matte Type" so wonderful. Is it that different from the stock glossy one?
3- I'm considering going with the i7-2720QM processor. Will I be missing a lot if I don't pick the 2820QM or the 2920QM? Is it possible in the future to upgrade to those or to different ones like the i7-90/970/990X processors?
4-Is the difference noticeable between the HD6970 & GTX485M Video cards? Will the HD6970 be able to play 3D video and games like the GTX485M?
5- Is the SSD drive really a MUST or will a hybrid drive be enough?
I think that sums it up. All I know is that this laptop is great and how badly I need to get one. That's why I need all the info that you can share. Other info about the noise/heat level and the best reseller to buy from would greatly be appreciated.
cheers -
-
2 - Matte! all the way! its my first one ever, and its WORLDS apart from all the glossy "crap" ive had before!
3 - the 2720qm has actually the best bang for the buck ratio, since its around 10-15% faster than the 2630, supports DDR-1600 (which the 2630 doesnt) and is only 5-10% slower than the top model 2920XM (which is like....what? 800-900 bucks extra? so not worth it!)
4 - depends whats important to you. best bang for the buck is definitely the 6970M sine its just like 250 bucks more than the 460M (but pretty much twice as powerful), as compared to 450-500 for the 485M. theyre almost on par, with the 485M having a slight advantage in total performance (5-6%) and battery life (3.5 hours vs. 2.5 hours max on the 6970M).
5 - again, depends whats important to you. a hybrid drive is a nice compromise between speed, pricing and storage space. BUT: once u switch to an SSD, ull never wanna go back, i can promise u that (especially after switching to my very first SSD myself, boot and loading times are a dream, same goes for reaction speed during every day work)
cheers,

Sorry for posting in the wrong thread.
Jaybee83..1000000 THANKSyour answers made my day. I'm going to go with what you said. But one thing is still hanging:
Regarding the video cards, I understood that i can run a beta driver on the GTX485M to play 3D games and video (on a suitable 3D TV or projector). What about the 6970M ? Will I be able to do the same?
Thanks in advance bro. -
hum, good question, i havent really worked myself into that whole 3D thing yet, ive just read that the 6790M supposedly only supports a total of two displays as opposed to the 485M which is able to control up to three (two externals plus the internal one). also, i think that nvidia has a slight edge when it comes to 3D support on notebooks, at least thats the impression im getting so far, since theres basically no example of an AMD powered 3D notebook that comes to mind..... anyone else got any thoughts / knowledge on that?
cheers -
kinda sucks to hear about the external bluray though since i did the same thing.. hmmmmm. that could be a problem lol -
-
Has anyone tried using wubi (Desktop Ubuntu) on their 8150 yet? Just got it set up and I'm having trouble getting it to recognize the wireless card and native screen resolution (It won't even recognize the monitor).
-
I'm not a gamer, but I want to get this "gaming" laptop for software development, and virtual machines, etc...
Does anyone have an opinion on getting this new ATI 6970 vs the NVIDIA 460M ? -
I have receive an e-mail from RJTEcH.com. The customer can buy standalone HD6970m (probably together with new heatsink compatible to NP8150) and install by themselves.

When you guys set the fans on max, does the fan hold max RPM the whole time? My fans reduce the RPM for a 0.1 sec and goes to full speed again. This happens every 2-3 sec.
-
Mine is audible most of the time due to the second monitor plugged in. -
-
-
-
I know this 6970 is new but do you imagine a more powerful processor (like this) running hot even if I'm not gaming ? (like using virtual machines) -
Can someone post a link to the video of that 95% matte thingy...hehe

Hi All,
I am really considering in ordering a sager 8150 after reading so many positive reviews.
Few questions though, does anyone know how the sandy bridge recall is effecting the sager laptops. This is one of my main reasons that I am withholding my decision to purchase and waiting until later when all the sager notebook supply have been fixed from the faulty processors.
Second question, does anyone know the sager product life cycle and if and when sager will be releasing a more updated model for the body (ie back-lit keyboard, better touch pad, and better keyboard quality) ?
Third question, how portable or unportable is the 15.1 incher?
Also, does anyone predict sager supporting video card switching (dedicatd to integrated and vice versa) to save battery life.
Thanks! -
Can't comment on the longevity.
It's about as portable as a 15" macbook except the power brick is HUGE and the computer itself is a tiny bit heavier. This will be subjective (obviously) but my personal opinion is that it's portable enough. -
Product life cycles..well, it usually comes to the release of new technology. If deemed sufficient, Sager/Clevo will include them in newer models, or an updated revision of their current lineup e.g. the NP8690 1st gen didn't have USB3.0, the later gens have USB3.0, but both support the use of newer CPUs/GPUs. From here, it'll be a few months or so before seeing something new in the current lineup, and we are already seeing new models from Clevo as we speak (e.g. 3D 120Hz NP8170 and GT 555m on the lighter models).
From the standpoint of the features in the laptop, I do not think a change in build will be applicable in the current lineup (backlit keys, better keyboard). Maybe for Clevo, it is better to release a new product rather than changing the design of their current ones.
The NP8150 is quite portable, not so heavy. The problem lies on the power brick; it's VERY big and you can kill someone just by throwing it.
Lastly, I do not predict the video card switching to ever come around in these models, mainly because of compatibility issues that harbour around them. -
