I've been looking into the HDD caddy for my machine to replace the ODD. This has likely been mentioned in the 185 pages, but what is the install process like? Does the ODD slide out with a slight tug, or does the laptop need to be dismantled to reach some screws?

youll need to take off the bottom panel to reach one single screw that holds the caddy inside the system. once that screw is gone u can push / pull the caddy out without problem.

For all MALIBAL customers, we're shipping orders from late Feb and early March now, so if you ordered around then or after - it won't be much longer now!

Wow buyers remorse just kicked in hard, you guys and lpc are shipping, while I just got word it might be up to two more weeks from my seller :(....is sager having any issues with supply, or do different resellers get different amounts of products? (Curious)

Does anyone know how the GTX 460m performs with the game bulletstorm? I still dont know if I want to spend 400€ more on a gpu. Can someone give a good reason why I should buy the GTX 485m instead of the GTX 460m?
    Thanks!

The single GTX 485M performs similarly to two GTX 460M's in SLI. However, I saw a youtube video of bulletstorm on a laptop that uses the ATI 5870 which performs closely to the GTX 460M so I wouldn't worry too much.

If you can wait a little more you may want to get the 6970 instead. Performance seems to be a tad below the the 485 and price seems to be a tad above the 460 :)

I read a LOT of reviews, and the 6970 is very attractive indeed, but the battery life is a bit worse isnt it? And i think AMD doesn't have an quivalent for CUDA right? Maybe I will just take the gtx 470m, but that one is poorly available in europe =/

yep, reviews show a battery time of up to one hour less (at idle), compared to the 485m. AMD´s equivalent for CUDA is called DirectCompute or Stream Computing, only that its not as widely used and compatible with conversion programs as is the case with CUDA.

what resellers have u checked so far in europe? anyone whos still looking for one, heres a very interesting thread i just ran into:

Yeah I know that one has been around for a lot of years. Too bad it has never been updated. But you have a deviltech? I want to buy at one.de (they are dirt cheap, lot cheaper then deviltech) but they dont have international keyboard layouts. There is a new company called skullbone systems, but I have never heard of that one.

For me batterylife is kinda important, I want to be able to at least use it in the train for 1.5 hours until the battery dies. I guess the gtx 460m is suffiecient because it is able to run most games at max settings, but it is not future proof. And since I sold my hp envy 14 last week I am really in the need of a new computer. What to do.. All of these luxury problems!

Is cuda impt to you? What will you be using it for?
I ask because imho the 470m is a poor choice now that the 6970 will be available soon. To me the only logical choices are the 460 if your on a budget and/or want nvidia/cuda, the 6970 if you want bang for buck, and the 485 if you want high end nvidia.

doesnt matter@updates, these resellers usually still sell clevo barebones, including the new models P150HM and P170HM :) and yeah, ive checked One as well, but deviltech was actually cheaper concerning my configuration (ordered with 2GB RAM and basic HDD, gonna upgrade everything else myself, cuz THATS the cheapest way ;) ) and yeah, i can only verify what trvlbug just said, i wouldnt really have any use for CUDA / Stream and im definitely the high end kinda guy in this case :D

Yeah it is important. I am a industrial design student and I use the whole CS5 suite a lot, and as far as I know, Adobe favours nVidia above AMD. I also use 3d modelling programs like 3ds max and solidworks for rendering & cad. I guess the 6970 will be at 470 price range right?

Yeah I know that upgrading myself will be a lot cheaper. Maybe I can even get the laptop as a barebone and buy myself the 6970 from MXM-upgrade. But for me the main problem is that I need a computer quick, I am using my old MSI right now (core2duo) and that kinda sucks after having used my HP envy i7 with vertex 2 for half a year ;) before that I had the w870cu with 720qm and gtx 280m, but the batterylife and weight were really killing me, but that wont be a problem anymore with the p150hm!

I am a part time video editor too and i occasionally use ae and ppro. Adobe is indeed in partnership with nvidia and ppro will only accelerate using nvidia cards ( with the hack). Afaik they are also moving the whole suite to support nvidia/cuda on cs6 and future iterations. Thats a big plus for nvidia right there.
Yes i think the 6970 will be at 470 prices.

Thanks for the replies everyone! @ trvelbug: ideally I want to have the exact same setup as you, it is "future proof" and yet you save a lot of costs by taking the "stock" i7 and "only" 4gb of ram. Its bad that the high end graphic cards always stay expensive, even if a "higher end" videocard is released. I think 400 euro EXTRA on a gpu is a lot of money. Still wondering what to do, I can afford it, but that will make me a poor student again ;)

    Considering getting an 8150.

Does anyone know if it comes with the latest drivers installed, as well as SP1 and all the updates that go with it?

I don't for sure, but from what I heard all the sellers are shipping laptops with SP 1 standard if you order it with Windows, plus all updated drivers as well. It was posted to another thread awhile back.

I know mine came with a driver disk with all current drivers, though I ordered mine without an OS as well (I checked them against the ones online. Only the Nvidia driver was older, but they don't offer anything for the 485m online yet).

Hey dudes! New here, just ordered a Deviltech Devil 9800 DTX with the following specs :

    15.6" LED FHD
    Intel Core i7 2630QM
    8 GB DDR3
    NVidia GeForce GTX 470M
    Seagate Momentus XT, 500GB

Basically, I'm new to the gaming laptop world since I used to use a ty HP for work and consoles for gaming so please pardon my lack of knowledge! I've noticed that most of you have opted for the matte screen.. I wanted to know if there's any reason you did that other than avoiding the annoying reflections. I went for glossy since I only work/play indoors in a fairly dark enviornment and now it appears they've already sent my laptop to the distribution house so it's probably too late to switch. Wondering if I've made a mistake! Thanks

You're probably fine. I was almost regretting not getting the 95% color gamut matte screen for my 8150 (Malibal didn't offer it). I got mine in on Thursday and I have to say, the glossy screen is pretty nice. It's much nicer than my older laptop, so it's not like it's crap or anything (old laptop was an XPS m1530).

I've always preferred glossy though, since it (artificially) gives the impression of better contrast and color. Now the glossy plastic around the screen on the other hand...

Quick question for current owners - how many monitors can the laptop support? If you hook up via HDMI and DVI, would you have 3 displays (internal/hdmi/dvi)?

I'm pretty sure it only supports two total. Either two external, or one external and the internal. My work Thinkpad is the same. I'll have to check when I get home from work though, as my desk in the datacenter only has a VGA + DVI monitor setup.

Great - even having 2 external would be nice. I know there are USB->DVI adapters, but I'd rather not buy one if I don't need to.

    Thanks in advance!

They do come with the latest drivers installed. I popped in the driver disk just to check, and when I tried to install the very first one (don't remember which), it said that a newer version is already installed. Makes you wonder why they included an older version of driver with the disc

Got my system on Friday ... right on time like Larry (reseller) said it would ... very impressed and highly recommend LPC Digital. Booted it up, installed the two programs I needed, and was up and running 8 minutes later.

    Sager NP8150
    i7 2720, gtx 485m, 12gb RAM, SATA 6.0Gbs Intel 510 SSD 120GB, Centrino Wireless Card

    Performance:
As good as I'd expect. The PassMark tests has my laptop performing better than average in each and every test (as compared to other's posted results)
Here are the results of my PassMark Tests:

    PassMark Rating
    This Computer 2428.4
    CPU Mark
    This Computer 7744.0
    2D Graphics Mark
    This Computer 324.9
    3D Graphics Mark
    This Computer 2167.9
    Memory Mark
    This Computer 2769.5
    Disk Mark
    This Computer 2650.8

    Usability:
I've already tried plugging it into the Big TV, and it works good on the big TV. The screen looks fine, the feel is rubbery, but I plan to get this thing all scratched up, so I don't really care too much about the overall look. The more scratched up it is, the less likely it will get stolen(?). Windows 7.

    Keyboard and Buttons:
I'm getting used to it. I definitely liked my Lenovo keys. I could feel when I was in the center of the key. There are no Volume Keys.

    Trackpad:
The track-pad seems just fine. I'm sure when it gets 'greased' up like any laptop (oil, grease, wear, tear), it will be even smoother. I'm an absolute expert in trackpad usage (on the airplane often), and this one will be no problem getting used to.

    Storage:
I have a DVD drive now, but after I'm done with all my computer installs, I'll be taking it out and putting in a Disk Caddy along with a whopping drive, for more local storage. I'm pretty excited about both the USB 3.0 and the ESATA.

    Disk Drive:
Yea, the disk drive I have is FAST... I might actually think about keeping programs un-installed if I don't use them frequently. The install is so fast, it might just be easier to save the drive space till I actually need the program again.

    Wireless:
I got the upgrade one. Seems to download stuff from the internet faster than my old Laptop. I'm glad I went full out on the wireless card, because the internet is where this computer is going to be 25% of the time.

    Overall Recommendation:
... only 2 days in, I'll need to put this through the ringer, but so far, so good.

I'm considering switching out the 510 with the G3.

On this page everything is slower than what the 510 Intel SATA3 6gbs provided ...
PassMark Software - Hard Drive Benchmark Charts

The score on this laptop was >> 2650
    ...

Here is more on how it's scored in more detail ...

    Disk Mark
    This Computer 2650.8
    Disk - Sequential Read
    This Computer 341.4
    Disk - Sequential Write
    This Computer 202.2
Disk - Random Seek + RW
    This Computer 189.3
(those last 3 numbers are MB/s)

    ...

I haven't run enough games to be able to tell the difference between this and any other SSD I've run (this one does seem faster though on other tasks).

I went for this config because it was SATA 6.0GB/s, and I figured I'd be ahead of the times for a bit.

Hopefully I can keep the Drive clean enough so that it performs well.

But what I did do is add an extra partition (right in W7). This is basically a temp drive that I'll use for fast & clean data access (temporary data access), or fast & clean installs (if I need to install a program temporarily).

Anyone have a 2x4GB DDR3 1600 on their machines already?

I'd like to ask a question; can the 1333 MHz and the 1600 MHz coincide with each other ? e.g. 8GB 1600 and 8GB 1333 on the laptop? Contemplating on getting the 1600 off somewhere...

No that's not the question; NP8150 supports 1600 MHz but only on two SO-DIMMS. So it will run at 1600.

What I'm asking is, is it possible to have both frequencies; 2 for each slot ? So will two RAMs run at 1600 and the other two RAMs run at 1333?

i have an additional 8gb ram lying around so i will be upgrading the machine to a total of 12gb ram. 4gb ram is just not enough for even 720p video editing.
i agree that 400euro extra is quite a big investment if you are a student. in the adobe suite, gpu acceleration will only help with transitions and effects. everything else including rendering is mostly handled by the cpu. im not sure how it goes for 3d max and your other programs. with that being said, you may be set with the 460 or even the 6970. let your cpu do most of the the work, as the 2630m imho is no slouch.

No, as was said previously you'll get 1333. The system only supports RAM at the speed of the slowest sticks, it doesn't matter how may slots you have.

    if you use 2x4GB 1600MHz, you'll get 8GB 1600MHz
    if you use 2x4GB 1333MHZ, you'll get 8GB 1333MHz
    if you use 2x4GB 1600MHz & 2x4GB 1333MHz, you'll get 16GB 1333MHz

all the ram in any system will always run at the same speed. The faster ram will just downclock to the speed of the slowest ram in the system.

Well for me 8GB 1333MHz is plenty enough for me. I don't do that much multitasking anyways...And if in the future it's not enough, I'll just double it to 16GB :D

It's noted on the service manual included in the laptop.

    Only supports 2 slots though.

And for eyecandy purposes :) :

thought this was interesting for those of you still trying to decide between 460 and the 485/6970.. this shows 15fps vs 30fps vs 60fps. if it makes a difference to you, you might want to splurge/wait for a better GPU so you get higher fps
