Now you're just making me feel bad for creating groups

One more thing I should also mention for Coaxer is that many of the resellers/rebranders also offer the option for barebones if you want to go that route.

yeah, I like the option w/out the OS, since I have a spare w7 key... will probably go for a Sager re-seller.

last question: does anyone know if they allow international credit cards, or better said, non US-based credit cards? even tough I'm shipping in the US.

I don't see why they wouldn't, but it's always good to ask before purchasing. You should also speak to a bunch of resellers before making your final decision.

This is more or less my thinking. I realize that they're comparatively stronger systems, but I'm wondering which would be more efficient.

    Thx

Along with the above I posted on early this morning also:
Sager is offering a new wireless card: Bigfoot Networks Killer™ Wireless-N 1102.
    More info here:
Sager has tested this exciting Gaming Wi-Fi card offering from Bigfoot networks, however they have noticed that on some of the models the hardware Wi-Fi LED indicator does not function. Sager has tested and the card will function as it should 100%, you will need to view if the RF Signal is being turned on / off with-in windows.

Question, how come the 8130's GTx460m doesn't feature Optimus? On Nvidia's site they list it as an optimus enabled GPU

my understanding is that the mobo isn't wired for optimus. sager decided optimus had too many issues to be present in a high end gaming machine

Doesn't the 5160 have a manual button? Why not use that?

The 5160, with the 540m, is not meant for high-end gaming, and thus, is better suited for optimus.

Because as others have said, it's buggy. There were enough downsides to optimus that more people would be upset by it on the 460m than not. It tends to crash games and have funny driver issues. For a laptop marketed for gaming, it was too much of a downside I assume.

Also, I spoke to Donald from PNB about this once before. In addition to the bugginess, its too difficult to switch from a high end card to the IGP. Like going 100mph down to 40mph in one second. It'll have side-effects as time goes on. He didn't get into too much detail about it, but honestly 2-4 hrs doing various things is very good for a gaming laptop. If you want something with optimus I suggest the Dell XPS 17 3d with the 555m. Its not the same, but it will get the job done.

I would get the Dell if it were 15" :(

Well, it lasts 2-4 hours for casual work/fun? That's not too bad.

Hey, I've been looking at this laptop for awhile. Reviews and such have said that it gets around 2-3 hours of battery life on a light load, what are your experiences with it? I mean when using word/the internet and stuff, not like gaming.

My 8130 will last just under 2 and a half hours while browsing over a wireless connection. If actually gaming, probably closer to 50 minutes.

I'm considering the NP8130 when they are available as a replacement for my Sandybridge HP DV6 and after watching some reviews on Youtube I have two questions.

Does the 8130 have a backlit keyboard?

Is the power brick as big as it looks in the videos? The thing looks HUGE in the videos. Not that I travel very often with my personal laptop but I would hate to have to lug a giant power brick around when I do bring my laptop out. The one I have now for this HP is about as large as I would want to carry around.

The 8130 does not have a backlit keyboard. As far as I know, no Sager/Clevo models have that as an option.

And yes, the power brick is that big. Just think of it as good exercise when you're hauling it around :)

But they can put an option in boot like press F5 to boot with IGP. So when you know you want to type your essay in word and nuthing more you can use the IGP that way

Right. That's what my wish has always been. It doesn't need to by dynamically switching. Manual switch at bootup like you suggest is perfectly fine with me, and actually preferable so you don't have to live with hybrid drivers.

I have a question: It's impossible to remove the IGP from the CPU. So, it's in our laptops right now. So is it possible to get switchable graphics by driver updates or even hacking?

    Damnit!

It seems like it's impossible to buy a 15.6" laptop with 1080p display, DDR5 Video card and a backlit keyboard for around $1,300 - $1,500.

    Any suggestions?

    Sorry guys,

The way this laptop is designed the ALL the outputs are wired to the MXM slot. So while you might be able to get the iGPU to turn on it won't be able to display anything because all the outputs run through the MXM slot. Its a physical wiring thing, not a driver thing :)

A backlit keyboard was high on my list of wants when I started researching. The Toshiba Qosmio, a few of the MSI machines, and some HP machines have them. All of them are missing something more important in that price range, though. MSI only has 720p in that range, Qosmio don't have the power at that price, etc. Ultimately, I decided that the price vs. specs on the Sager was a much better deal, despite the lack of backlit keyboard.

Well.... they did have a good four weeks or so to look at making a modified motherboard! Instead I guess they just rested on their inventory instead of using as an opportunity to improve. sigh.

I'm pretty sure they didn't re-design the motherboard at all since all they had to do it swap the chipset chips. Re-designing it would've most likely cost them more since they'd have to print out new PCBs etc. and they'd be wasting their current stock of components.

Hi guys, I'm also interesting in NP8130. So far this laptop seems like a sweet deal, but I'm wondering if anyone know how much of a performance boost can I gain from 2720QM instead of the default 2630QM?

Also I notice on the XoticPC that they start to offer the option of matte screen for NP5160 with 95% NTSC Color Gamut, is the matte screen on the NP8130 the same?

CPU boost for what? Gaming? Very little. I got it mainly because of the AES new instructions and VT-d.

The matte screen on the NP8130 is NOT the 95% color gamut screen.

Boost for photoshop, maya, after effect, premiere and etc.
So the matte screen on the NP8130 is not as good compares to the 95% color gamut screen?

No that standard screen that comes with the 8130 is not as good as the upgrade. If I remember correctly, the upgraded 95% was a matte screen too. So, if screen quality is important too you, then I suggest getting the screen.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't see the 95% matte screen as an option for NP8130 on XoticPC website though. and NP8150 is over my budget.

For the apps you mentioned, the more CPU horsepower the better. Mainly just reduce time to process the images or rendering.

Thanks for the link htwingnut! Morning and how's going?

Well, judging by the pictures took from a digital camera(I assume it is), I most definitely want the 95% gamut! Maybe I should go with NP5160? But I really don't know if I'll like the speaker been on the bottom though...

Looks like the G53sw might not be available for some time. I'll probably stick with the 8130 despite the lack of a backlit keyboard =/

I do like the layout of the ports much better on the Sager. How these companies think that it's a good idea to put the power jack on the right side of the laptop is beyond me.

If you're looking for a graphics driver, I'd suggest you get the video drivers from Nvidia's site. They have drivers for the 460M.
