found this other thread that deals with my question about dual channel ram. It seems that the debate rages on re: that topic, with no super clear answer. I liked it better when I was totally ignorant of this issue . . .

No worries, if you don't need all juice it is minimal advantage. Besides 8 Gb is better if you want to upgrade later.

I have a W370ST so maybe not the model you were looking at, but i thought i'd just chime in...

I have a 2.5" 256GB vertex 4 SSD as boot drive, 240GB mSATA crucial M500 as a steam games drive - both operate at SATA lll speeds. The other 2.5" bay has the 750GB 7200 rpm mechanical disk that came with the laptop as general storage.

Regarding temps, throttling and fan control:

Paste jobs are awful - my one was missing paste on about 20 - 30% of the CPU die face and hit 100c under load, maybe more if it hadn't shutdown - after a re-paste it doesn't get higher than 80c in 20c ambient. Fan, obviously is quieter now. GPU wasn't an issue, but runs a good 10c cooler, so 65c under furmark type stress.

the 4700MQ I have in mine balances out at approx 2.7GHz under continuous load of all 4 cores, no throttling hardware wise, just drops the multi to stay under TDP limits

Fan control wise, I don't think it goes full throttle for no reason, I have one of the later BIOS updates but it still happens. For me though, it only happens when TZ0_ (I assume the secondary MB temp sensor) gets warm, which happens when the mechanical disk gets hot (torrents etc.) or when I've been using it on my lap on battery, then plug it in to AC - the increase in heat both having it on lap and of the battery heating up under charging raises the temp enough ~55c that the fan is triggered. The problem though, is that the fan is seperated from the chassis - it draws from underneath and straight out the rear, passing over the heatsink assembly, which cools the heatpipes to the GPU and CPU.
What then tends to happen, (until the battery is charged, or you put the laptop on a table, elevated surface etc.) is that the CPU and GPU temps drop into the high 30's, your left leg gets cold, but the main cavity remains 'hot' so the fans stay on.

When the laptop is left on a cooler or table etc. it's fine, as it is on battery, or plugged in with a full battery, or when the mechanical disk isn't in use, but any combination, or on your lap and the fan comes on until the poorly ventilated, main cavity cools down.

    my £0.02 !

P.S. if anyone knows where on the MB this temp probe is located, i'd love to know and test whether cooling it actually shuts the fans off, i'd seriously look to invest in a miniature fan that would fit in there, if one exists and I could give it the correct supply voltage!

I just received my Sager NP 7378 yesterday, with the new Nvidia 860M Maxwell in it. I did not have time to do much with it yet. Should I worry about updating any of the drivers at this point? Or should I change out the sound software? I only have StarCraft 2 and do not intend to install other games, but I will at least check how hot it gets playing that game and report on same here. I do not particularly want to run Furmark or anything that could do any harm to it, but if anyone has any special requests or suggestions, or any questions about this model, just let me know and I will follow up when I can.

So far my impressions are that it is cool and quiet, probably in part due to the fact that this is my first laptop with an SSD. I have not noticed any fan noise issue yet, but all I have done is install software and watched a little Netflix instant play. This is my first experience also with Windows 8.1, which is a bit of a change from Windows 7, but does not appear too annoyingly different. Office loaded incredibly quickly. StarCraft 2, as on every other machine, downloads incredibly slowly.

Should be good to go out of the box. Don't worry about updating anything until you start running into an issue. In that event driver updates may be available that address that particular problem.

I'm thinking of buying the 7358 soon... can anyone with this model confirm that it can run FurMark and Intel Burn Test (or Prime95, but IBT is more intensive) at the same time at stock GPU clock speeds and CPU clocked at 2.4 GHz (that is, at the speed of a 4700MQ without turbo) without overheating or throttling (this is my litmus test; my old Lenovo Y580 whose screen recently went out barely passed)? Also, how reliable are Sagers usually? I haven't read too many reviews of them as a whole; I understand they are closely tied to a direct supplier of some sort so maybe that's why they aren't as well known? Thanks.

Just found this model and am seriously leaning toward it. However, I don't need the GTX860. 840 or 850 would be plenty. Is there a way to get the W355SS chassis with a downgraded GPU to save a little on the cost? I originally was planning to get the W650SJ but then I saw that ridiculous configuration of the 10-key pad and that seems to be prevalent across many of Clevo's 15.6" models, so that's why I'm now landing on the W355SS except the price is a little steep.

Please note that the NEW 15" model is the Clevo W355SSQ NOT the W355SS.

The NEW 17" is the Clevo W370SS. See the User Manual in URL below.... :)

I don't know if the 355SS is different from the W350SS (Sager NP7358) listed on XoticPC, but assuming they're similar, the listed weight over there is 5.95 lbs. As far as laptops go, it's decently heavy (and pretty thick as well), though far from the worst offender either (especially with those 10 pound super gaming laptops out there).

MSI GE60 Apache seems to be about a half inch thinner and weighs about 5.23lbs, so that's another option if you're trying to go for a bit smaller 15" laptop. Sager is about $150 cheaper though (once you factor in the cost of buying an OS and upgrading to 1TB 7200 RPM HD to make it about par with the MSI) and the extra cash can get you a slightly better processor (i7 4810 vs 4700) and Blu Ray drive on XOTICPC and still come in at about $70-$80 less than the GE60. Also, the added bulk of the Sager gives that system room for 2 SATA HD (in addition to the mSATA port) vs just 1 slot on the MSI.

Anyone got the latest Clevo Control center for the W370SS on Windows 7. Clevos website only lists the windows 8 drivers and Sager which has windows 7 options doesnt have this model on it yet. The windows 8 version installs but doesnt work.

    Quick question,

The new W370SS *seems* to be identical to the W370ST aprat from upgrading the GPU from 765m to 860m.

Can I buy a replacement motherboard and 860m (I assume they're soldered) for the W370SS and install it into my W370ST?

Problem is find someplace that will sell you just the motherboard. We cant even get them individually from Sager. Any motherboard issues that come up the whole computer has to be sent in to them.

Bugger.speaking to you guys was my next port of call.

That's annoying, though I imagine they'd much rather sell a new laptop,I was thinking of contacting clevo or sager, but if you chaps have to Rma then there's not much hope.

Unless, do you know what the make and model motherboard is? I.e. are Asus or gigabyte etc contracted to produce them? Maybe could intercept before clevo, though again,a company that big is probably unlikely to care to deal with individual...

Not sure who produces them. Because of how the ports like USB etc are placed on the chassis and internal layout of the computer you wont be able to put another one in there. Your real only bet to find one is on Ebay but probably wont have any luck with that on a current model.

So, the W350SS is listed as having:

    "1 CRT output Port"

I've never heard of this port before and I can't find anything about it through Google. It looks like this:

    Can anyone else say?

It is just a VGA port. Many monitors and most projectors have that port. It is designed to send an analog signal to a monitor.

maybe it's a language thing? In the olden days we used to have these massive big square things, they weighed a ton, chewed AC and blasted electrons at a phosphor coated screen. Luckily we don't use them anymore :p

i'm sure the last thing I saw with a VGA port was a nintendo wii.

I guess they had so much free space they thought the'd just throw one in!

How have people got on putting performance ram into these machines?

When I bought my W370ST the company said all they could get to work was samsung basic ram, but now I have the BIOS unlocked, it has a 'max frequency limit' drop down which goes up to ~2666

The problem I have at the moment is that I can't seem to make manual timing adjustments or frequency adjustments save and be applied after a reset. I'm not sure if it's becuase the ram can't accept timing changes, as it's basic pc-12800, or whether i just need some ram with XMP profiles

I want to upgrade my wlan card since I now have a AC router. I've purchased a new Intel 7260 AC half mini card and just waiting for it to arrive.

I tried to find where this is located in the notebook but don't see it anywhere in the manual. Can anyone tell me where it is?

So I think I'll be picking up an mSATA SSD for my 7358/W350SS (when it arrives). I'm curious if Sager provides the screws needed to keep it in place or whether I need to find these separately (not sure if they're supposed to come with the mSATA drive)?

Also just to confirm what I read in this thread, the mSATA slot is under the keyboard, and the service manual for the W350ST should be accurate for the details in how to open up the W350SS?

I just installed a crucial M500 mSATA into my W370ST, screws come with it, although I only had a hole for one. To be honest, for a card that's smaller than a business card, I don't think you even need to put the screw in, the connector offers a lot of friction, you'd have to throw the laptop down a flight of stairs to dislodge it :p

I've just ordered 2x4gb 1.35v 1866MHz ripjaws to replace my 3x4gb 1.5v 1600MHz bargain stuff. will update on compatibility when it comes in the post :-s

Thanks for help carbide and Meaker. Guess the first thing I'll be doing with my 7358 is opening it up and slapping that mSATA SDD in there so I can install Windows on it. Never had an SSD before so I'm expecting quite a nice bump in performance.

    Clevo w370st (860m 17" Matte) or w650sj (850m 15" IPS)?
My concerns are: ips or no ips, battery, temperatures, fan noise.
About the price, here in my country(Brazil) the difference is $300!!!

Hello people I have a new W355ST and are having some problem.
First off I installed win 7 on it, so the driver cd that came with it says "can not recognize your OS". And the clevo site only shows drivers for Win 8?
Also my wireless internet is working fine, but the ethernet port does not react to cables?

I also read somewhere back that there have been release an EC flash for these systems to fix the sudden burst of the fans at medium load? But the link does not work ?
Also, is it hard to "flash" the EC? how hard is it compared to the bios?

    Thank you very much :)

Have you tried one of the free third-party driver finders like Slim Drivers or DriverMax? If there are Win7 drivers available for the hardware in your laptop, they should be able to find them.

I have the same question as Rahldrac. Can someone please provide a link to the BIOS and EC files for the NP7358?

So the resellers (Xotic PC, etc) are the ones that have the BIOS and EC files? Sager (or is it Clevo?) doesn't have them on their site?

And you have CONTACT them to get these files? They don't just have them listed on their website? That's the craziest crap I've ever heard. So if I want a BIOS update I have to wait until they get around to giving it to me?

They are not posted because updating the wrong can cause the computer not to work. Its not like installing drivers where its pretty foolproof. Once requested they will be sent to you, all you have to do is contact your original reseller and they will email them to you.

That's real nice and all, but practically EVERY PC manufacturer I've ever had to deal with has the BIOS files posted on their website for download.
