Why I am a bit puzzled is Clevo during the development stage (literally months ago) had to of validated the dual cores along with the quad’s, thus they know these will work with the machines.

Also I can see how Sager would want to test them, as any responsible company would. But to wait till then to actually update their website (thus allowing the resellers to follow suit) seems to be a bit overly cautious.

By the way I am still interested in the 5160, but unfortunately very recent circumstances has put that on hold indefinitely. :(

My guess would be to avoid another issue like the ones that are currently being faced (better safe than sorry). I don't know the volume of units sager sells, but not being able to ship units for two months can't be good for their bottom line.

Also, if you are referring to the freezing issues thread, it gets more confusing/depressing everyday that such a new laptop could have these issues.

Would a "total price" quote of $1,593.18 from MYTHLOGIC include sales tax, or does that get factored in later? I live in CA.

Edit: Can I avoid sales tax through Xotic PC or MYTHLOGIC if I live in CA?

We only charge sales tax to people who buy in MI (because we are based in MI). Other states do not get charged tax.

Did you see mythlogic post on the issue? That is why I felt compelled to write my statement. But yea I imagine caution is in order right now.

Nope it has to do with personal financial issues. If I could, I would still order one right now. :(

I'm assuming no one has first hand info about this, but perhaps the resellers might know... What touchpad does this laptop use? Synpatics? Size? What's the qualitative assessment? Any info appreciated!

I'm finally closing in on a laptop purchase now that almost all the SB models that I'm interested in are out and starting to look at some of the details.

Synaptic touchpad, multi-touch enabled. Size I don't know off hand, but if its the same one as was on the 5135 (which by all accounts it should be), then its a decent pad, the finish of it gets a little dirty after awhile but doesn't impact performance.

This issue matters to me also.

So, I can't disable the NVidia GPU on the bios?
I use Linux as well and I know that Optimus still doesn't work properly on it.

On that situation, I rather use only the iGPU, to save battery. I can't do it, is that you're saying?
And if I decide to eventually turn the NVidia GPU on (on bios), I will not have access to its full capacities on Linux?

And if I have NVidia GPU on, it will spend the same amount of power, even that I'm really using the iGPU?
    That's lame...

    Just trying to clarify it...

    Regards.

Yea you can shut down the dGPU in the BIOS and it won't even be detected.

Hey, that's nice to hear. Thanks.

But still I couldn't have Nvidia's full power on Linux, right?
(Not that it will be much of a deal, but then I wouldn't bother trying to figure out how to fix it hehehe)

And some other thing that passed on my mind:

How would you compare the battery life of this notebook while using th iGPU only or when using Nvidia's Optimus?
Would the iGPU get an hour more or so?

    Regards!

For those interested the I5's are now released on the Sager NP5160 and NP5170. Also the new Intel 510 Series SSD's are now available for order. :)

    EDIT:

Along with the above I posted on early this morning also:
Sager is offering a new wireless card: Bigfoot Networks Killer™ Wireless-N 1102.
    More info here:
Sager has tested this exciting Gaming Wi-Fi card offering from Bigfoot networks, however they have noticed that on some of the models the hardware Wi-Fi LED indicator does not function. Sager has tested and the card will function as it should 100%, you will need to view if the RF Signal is being turned on / off with-in windows.

Alright, Im still on the fence between the 5160/8150. With all the upgrades I want, the 5160 comes to $1100 while the 8150 comes to $1560. And Im only going to be playing SCII, WoW, and maybe KOTOR online. Do you guys think the GT540 can handle these games with a decent framerate on med-high settings with the FHD screen?

Justin or any of the other resellers,

What's the real difference between the i5-2520M and the i7-2630QM on this model? I know the battery life is better on the dual-core and that the quad-core is better for applications using multi-threading, but there has also been talk about WiDi and other stuff that seems to be different between the two. Anything more concrete would be great.

The main differences are as you mentioned Dual Core vs Quad, cache size and GHz. I haven't heard anything on WIDI in relation to the CPU.

    Hey,

The 2630qm is the odd ball processor in that it has a lot of features disabled. The dual-core line up all support WiDi properly and the other technology.

just saw the addition of the FHD matte screens with the 95% ntsc gamut on xotic (i think this has been an option for some time now on mythlogic). any experience or pics that compare this with the regular FHD glossy regarding contrast, color representation, brightness, viewing angles, etc? is it worth the premium?

    Edit:
nm, just found the shweet photos posted by mythlogic: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...-between-different-screen-options-photos.html

    Is it possible to add 16GB (2 x 8GB)?

I would really like the option of have 16 GB for RAM on the 5160. The only other alternative is selecting another laptop such as 8150.

Funny you list those games, if you just add Guild Wars 2 then we would be talking about the exact same game list ;). If you check on Youtube, there is a guy with a Sony Vaio F series i think that has a first gen i7 processor and an NVIDIA 330M graphics card which is between 20-30% less powerful than the 540m in this Sager. He is playing wow on high settings at FHD and his framerates are 50+ all the time.... it only dips into the 40s when he is using FRAPS. So yeah, I think the 540m will be able to do well with those games, though I think Guild Wars 2 might strain it a bit and don't expect to go ultra with SC2.

Hi guys, I've been following this thread since the beginning. I'm considering the NP5160 or NP8130, I like the idea of mobility; since my current laptop is heavy and aging, moreover, I need something that runs in 64bit.

However, I'm concerning about the speaker position of this laptop, can anyone who owns or have experienced with this laptop give me some idea of what I can expect?

This is my very first post here in the forum! :)
    Thank you in advance.

I'm also concerned on this! And if Optimus is on or if its disabled, how about the difference in the battery usage?
    Anyone?

    ccfu,
about the sound, I've just read bad news.
But again, I would not expect a good sound quality for a notebook, even that I really use it for music and movies. I use external speakers or headphones almost every time.

It takes space for the sound to be projected in a really good way, and it's not what can be done on a notebook.

But even then, if your question is about the difference between other models, it seems that this notebook is below average on the sound quality.

Noone has this laptop to confirm battery times yet but I'd speculate web browsing battery life with 60% screen brightness to be around 4 hours, potentially even more.

    Depending on its battery capacity...
There are more than one battery capacity option, right?

I will depend what a local Clevo reseller (or should it be assembler?) and what they will offer.

4 hours sounds nice to me.
I know there are other models that promise more, but I actually never had a notebook that could take it that long.

Hi, can I ask several questions? I am about to buy Sager NP5160.

Which processor should I get? I want to know the differences between the i5 and different types of i7 processors. I tried googling, but to no avail.

Next, the NP5160 comes with a glossy screen, right? But I want to see under the Sun, as I will use my notebook in a bus while traveling too. Would pasting a matte screen over it work?

Finally, I see an option to upgrade the battery to "NP5160 SMART Li-ION BATTERY PACK 6 CELLS 62.16 WH". How does that work? Is it like the slice battery found in HP Envies? How much weight does it add? And how much more juice do I get, compared to the normal battery. Or is that option just to get another battery? (I suspect the later, since it has the same amount of Wh as the original battery, but it doesn't hurt to ask)

Depends on what you want to do with the machine. For most people the dual core processors will be more than enough for what they want to do with them. Especially if they are being used for light gaming / office work.
It does come with a glossy screen. You could either get a matte cover or we also offer that laptop with a matte screen in it (You can PM me for more info)

The batteries are all standard size of the 62.16 WH. There are no slice options, just to get another battery.

    thanks!

Sweet deal, Im definately leaning towards the 5160 now. $500+ just doesnt seem worth it to play a few more games on high (For video editing and such, I understand). Now I just gotta wait for resellers to get them in stock. :(

Thank you for the reply, well, I know I can't expect a good sound quality out of a notebook. I just hope that the speaker can be at least on average. :(

I believe I'll need to wait a little longer here in Brazil...

    ccfu, I really can't tell.
I don't know of any reliable test on the sound quality...
The speakers are at the bottom of the notebook, right?
Take a look on this review.
NP8130 has even a subwoofer... but I wouldn't expect a very good sound on it. Besides the extra weight...

Yes, I believe the speakers are at the bottom... That's what I'm more concern about, especially when I want to browse on my bed or say on soft surface.
I currently have a 17" Dell which the weight is probably at (or close to) 10lbs include the power brick. I definitely want my new laptop to be as light as possible, but I also do a lot of graphic intense work like photoshop, maya, zbrush etc... That's why I'm thinking about NP8130. But the weight and battery life on NP5160 seems so sweet... :p

Thanks for the link of the review :D

any news on when the OCZ Vertex 3's are gunna be available, and if it will be available on this machine?
i keep hearing different estimates, from end of march to as late as may. seems like it's supposed to be faster and cheaper than the intel 510. and since the release of the np5160 is backed up anyways, it just might be worth the wait.

I know, right? My Inspiron 9400 has been dead for over 2 months now. My only option over the past 2 months has been to use an old 2.8 GHz P4 with a GeForce4 Ti graphics card on a 720p HDTV. And I don't have a comfy way to use a mouse with the set-up either. I sure hope we hear some news about actual shipments next week!

Out of the box (before extra packaging) 19 x 14 x 7 12lbs So I would add a pound or two once they get fully built up.

Yea our latest estimate from OCZ directly is June. So its going to be quite the wait. We'll probably have them when they come out, but as I said its going to be a while =)

Don't use a laptop on soft surfaces. Just buy a lap desk for approx. $20 (or make your own for even less) for use on your bed or other soft surfaces and always use your laptop on a hard surface. In addition to muffling sound when speakers are at the bottom, on most laptops there are vents on the bottom that would be blocked by placing it on a soft surface. Cooling is very important, especially on gaming laptops, especially while gaming. Don't compromise the cooling by placing it on a soft surface. You will cook it and greatly reduce the life of it.

I put in my pre-order for this little baby yesterday! Very excitedly waiting now :).

I plan on using it for work (software dev) and home. I look forward to not taking 30 minutes to build a small huge project!

I was wondering if anyone has a preference on a usb docking station they intend to use. Right now my laptop has the supplied dell dock, and I don't have much in the way of peripherals. 1 monitor, keyboard, ethernet, mouse if I wanted.

Wireless ones look interesting, but apparently suffer with HD video. I really wish I could find a cooler dock solution with USB 3, but I do believe I'm living in a dream world for that :).

Anyways just wanted to get the communities thoughts!

    Wait a second!

Does the 5160 offer dual HDDs without having to swap out the optical drive? This is odd because that feature is not offered on xoticpc, and yet on mythlogic it is an offered option. Any explanations please?

    Welcome robobzzoy!

    And congrats on your purchase!

As for the dock station, you might try searching / posting in the Accessories Forum.

Doesn't this have Wireless Display 1080p w/ bluetooth & Wifi? So there's less reason to use dock. I'm sure just a matter of time before usb 3.0 dock becomes reasonable.

With Intel Advanced 6320 and Ultimate 6300 (and possibly higher), you get WiDi automatically. :D
