Seriously? I am not in a rush but come on. I'm getting a Duke Nukem Forever vibe here. (Though, that is actually releasing now :p) The more time I wait, the more posts I see causing me to second guess this purchase. Side vents overheating, etc.

The "news" is the same information that Sager released last week. Once Clevo gets the new chipsets in the next week or so they will go through thorough testing that will probably take about two weeks, and if it passes their testing they will begin to bring in limited quantities (as many as they can get, but still limited numbers) and Sager is hopeful to begin shipping the finished product again around mid-March for the NP81x0 series and end of March/Early April for the NP51x0 series.

    ive been reading about sandybridge
Intel?s Sandy Bridge i7-2820QM: Upheaval in the Mobile Landscape - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News
says that a i7-2820qm with hd3000 the battery is 71wh gets 416min on websurfing. I know the sager np5160 says comes with the 62wh battery should it get nearly 350min? idk how optimus plays in effect with battery life. like does the nvidia card go into idle? if someone can elaborate more for me lol. Im decided on waiting for this or get the acer 4820tg.

There's no comparison between Acer and Sager

Acer is cheap crap and Sager is quality

    Avoid Acer at all costs.

The Sager is definitely a top notch machine, but the 4820tg is ok for what it is. It is a much less expensive machine, and accordingly of lower quality. The screen quality is just OK, but for $700.00 it's not a bad machine.

Hi Espada- If you want more information you should check out the Acer 4820 owners lounge. I'll be happy to answer your question over there. I just don't want to hijack this thread.

    Quick question, guys-

Im gonna order one of these in a few months (after this SB nonsense dies down). But I think Im going to start stocking up on hardware for it. I just bought a 128gb SSD ($120 NIB off CL), but it doesnt have an enclosure. If I order a 5160 from say, Xoticpc, with like a 120gb HD in the optical bay, can I just switch the SSD for the one it comes with? Basically, Id be paying for the caddy, and sell the installed HD.

Yea or you can also just order a laptop and we can give you a price for a caddy to go with it and you don't have to buy a 120GB HD just to get a caddy. Just PM us for more info =)

I had a little boutique factory where I manufactured my own designs. When a new product was all figured out and customers were waiting it always seemed to take FOREVER! The miracle of these little boxes is how they can be so complicated and so cheap and so trouble free. I say cut em some slack on this. There's always scrabble, or knitting.

I have my own caddy that I used in my 13" macbook in place of the optical drive. So that would work in one of these Sager Models? how does the tray load work? Is there an opening? Would I transfer the plastic? MB had slot loading so it was easy to just swap in and out, unsure about the tray ones found in the Sagers in terms of a caddy.

The tray loading ones have a little screw that holds the drive in place.

Thus, you would need to unscrew the screw, and push it out from inside a bit, and you will be able to find a handle that you can just grab and pull out.

A tray-load may seem a bit complicated at first, but after you locate the single screw, it will be much easier.

Also, you have to transfer the mounting bracket which was held by the screw to the caddy, and you will be all set.

I am thinking of getting one in April and wanted to know if it has a backlit keyboard? if not that might be a dealbreaker for me. Also xoticpc offers custom graphic/logo and I wanted to know if that is any good. I mean does it look high end or just as if a sticker has been stuck on?

it does not have a backlit keyboard hawk, though of all the features to be missing, I can hardly think of a reason why a backlit keyboard would be the dealbreaker. I can't find a laptop with as much power and as nice a screen for the money as this. I think Xotic offers a few different custom graphic options ranging from high quality stickers to straight up paint jobs.

Hi, I'm in the market for a new SB laptop. I'm considering the NP5160 but have concerns about the build quality. If I did my research correctly this has the same chassis as the NP5125 and looking through that owner's lounge did nothing to assuage my fears. Reviews such as the one about the NP5125 on notebookreview.com didn't help either. Can anyone speak to whether or not this is just personal preference or is there really a perceptible difference in the quality of this to say a Sony or Asus laptop? Also Justin mentioned a newer A Surface for this... is it more rigid or merely cosmetic?

I currently own a Dell studio 15 and it does have a backlot keyboard. There have been many times when I was unable to use the keyboard without turning the backlight on but I guess I could do without it. I'll still wait till somebody gets one and posts their review before I get mine. I was going with an alienware m15x but the bad battery life kinda was a deal breaker. So now I am hoping that this with the SB processor and optimus does provide me with enough battery life.
About the xotic custom graphics has any one hot them and do they look any good? I an really concerned that they'll just look cheap

i have been recommended this laptop and just had a few questions, i know its not been released yet but i only play WoW and sc2 and just wondered if there was a similar model and how well that laptop keeps cool, i also understand different cpu/gpu can affect the heat output just wondering if this laptop overall has good heat dissipation

I'm quite interested in this my self. I'm considering this as a laptop that I'd be carrying around quite a lot, and doing a good amount of writing on. The specs sound great, I'd pre-order it right now but for concerns about the keyboard/chassis.

Well, I found some info regarding WoW and a 330M video card which is between 10-25% less powerful than the 540M that is in this Clevo. I believe there is even a youtube vid of some guy playing WOW on his Sony F series (with the 330M) with some really great framerates at FHD. I think WoW will run perfectly on this machine, and SC2 will run great on detail High or less... you will not be able to get desirable framerates with Ultra on. Hope this info helps!

According to the rumor mill, the highest i5 dual core isn't even as fast as the base quad-core so I'm not exactly sure why anyone would get the dual core unless the price difference is THAT great.

For what I will be using the laptop for an i5 2520 will be more than enough.

Also I want a 35W part instead of a 45W part to get the best possible battery life. This lappy will be used more for portable use unplugged.

The cost difference will be around $100-$150, so the savings in money and the battery life increase works out well for me.

I have no doubt they exist, just not sure the highest dual core is worth it since it isn't that much different in price. Now the one right below the fastest dual core actually seems to save a decent amount of money, now we just need some benches to see if it actually saves that much on battery.

I am interested in getting one for moderate gaming and college school work. I am torn between the decisions of staying at 4GB ram or upgrading to 8GB however. I don't know if I will ever need the 4GB extra RAM. Otherwise, I am excited for this laptop because it is of very good value considering that the specs packed in this device could run for over a grand easily. I also heard good things about its reliability and longevity.

If your use would be with apps that are single or dual threaded only the i7 2620m would own the i7 630QM, but for muli-threaded I would say go for the quad. I imagine the price difference between the 2 processors will be pretty small, so the choice would really depend on your use now and in the future. However for the i5 2520m at a price point of around $225 (125-150 less than the above models) that really is a bargain. According to Sager engineers the battery life is around 4.5-5 hours with the quad. I would bet the 2520 being lower clocked and 10W TDP less will get well above 5 hours even if Sager numbers are a bit exaggerated.

Edit: I know benches would sure be nice, it would give people a better idea what to get based on their needs.

We have some orders that already have those processors. We're just waiting for the shells to come in. So they will be released at the same time as everyone else's orders. Thats only for us, because we are Clevo system builders and not sager resellers we are quicker to release this kind of stuff as we build our own machines.

Sager will be releasing the i5's as soon as these models come into stock. They are awaiting for testing first for final confirmation before launch. Offering a new item without some initial testing in the model is a little risky. Any customer that has a order in can always change to the new i5's once they launch. Sager has confirmed they will be available once the first 5160/5170's arrive and they do some testing on each CPU.

Has anyone actually gotten their hands on one of these, yet?

I'm asking because I'd like someone to confirm whether or not the BIOS has configuration options for switching between Intel Graphics HD 3000 / Discrete NVidia 540M and Optimus modes (that is, you can choose a "switch" at the BIOS level between exposing either 1) one or the other graphics solution ONLY or 2) exposing both via the optimus API). I know that some already-released optimus laptops support this switching feature in the BIOS config, and I'm curious if the 5160 does as well.

I only ask because I'm a linux user and I know that, for optimus systems, the laptops tend to be "stuck" in the integrated graphics mode unless you can configure the system, at the BIOS level, to enable the discrete graphics. This issue is, basically, a show-stopper for me and I'll have to settle for a system (like the 8130) without optimus if this can't be configured in the BIOS. I prefer the tighter form-factor of the 5160 and hope that it can be the model that I purchase, eventually.

Also: anyone noticed that the official nvidia drivers (for windows and linux) don't support the 500M series of chipsets, yet? How is anyone supposed to have working graphics with this? Are there reference drivers that Clevo/Sager are distributing?

    Thanks.

All our machines are tested, then tested again, by us =) Plus we already have our confirmation that they work just fine. We wouldn't put it on our site if we weren't 1000% sure it would work and work well.

Its a standard optimus implementation. That means in linux the only thing that will work is the iGPU, as it doesn't have true switchable graphics so you won't be able to get the dGPU to work in linux except for some cuda work.

I am sure all sellers test the items they sell, just getting at Sager is not taking that leap of launching the CPU's until they are hand tested first. How can anyone be 100% if not a single 5160/5170 has arrived in the US? Since your machines are purchased from Sager and Sager is not planning on listing the i5 until they receive models and test it personally, there is no guarantee on it as "stuff" can always happen. :) .

Was pretty sure Mythlogic doesn't actually purchase from Sager, I thought they purchased from Clevo (but I could be totally wrong). In other news, no... the 5160 cannot upgrade the graphics processor because the GPU is permanently attached to the logic board. If Clevo decides to use the 555m it would probably be in an entirely different laptop.

The ONLY North American Importers from Clevo are Sager and Eurocom. You are exactly right about the GPU. :)
