Optimus can be a bit fickle. Why not make a copy of that file while it's in use, close the program, then put that copied file in that directory (named popcapgam1.exe), select it manually in nVidia Control Panel to use the integrated GPU, Apply, and then delete the file. Actually you could copy and paste and rename any exe file, Optimus doesn't care. It just looks for the file name. Then after you set it up, just delete the program. Optimus won't look for it until it goes to start up.

So I redid my repaste and with -100mv and a mq4700, propped I'm still seeing processor temps of 95c :-/ honestly I'm okay with that but no room for anymore speed. The other concern was a bit of solder on my processor heatsink from factory see the photo, creates a bit of roughness right near the edge. Should I be concerned?[

Yes because it prevents a good contact between heatsink and cpu, that's probably what's causing such high temps for ya.

Can someone with a scale tell me how much this thing weighs without a hard drive? (Only msata)

Oops yeah that sounds right. He can confirm if there was an hdd or not. But the hdd shouldn't add that much, for instance my travelstar 1tb weighs 115 grams.

So then... yesterday i flashed the stock ´05 Bios and EC and also the ME 9 Firmware (Intel ME Version: v9.0, Build 1462, Hotfix 21), all from Prema´s site. Has anyone experienced any improvments on battery lifetime or anything else?

And are there changelogs to the W230ST BIOS´es/ EC´s / ME-Firmwares existing so far? Right after the updates i thought, the erratic fan control is back, but is seems like this fan controller really needs to "groove in" because the longer the laptop runs, the better (and smoother) the fancontrol gets.

I wrote Sager and I'll see what they say. Any idea how something like this is handled, will Sager normally just send a part like this out or would I need to send the whole laptop in. The former would really be a bummer since I no longer have any other computer and that would prove difficult with school.

The good news: I added a 0-byte file called "popcapgame1.exe" in the folder, and it picked it up. It named it "Zuma Deluxe", presumably because that's another Popcap game with the same crazy DRM. The bad news: the dropdown for changing the GPU setting is disabled, and set to dGPU. ? I don't think I've ever seen this before. Maybe I should ask over at the NVidia forum...

I've installed a second msata ssd into my w230st. It is detected in the bios but when I turn the laptop on, it's not detected in My Computer.
Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong? I've never installed a drive on my own before.

Edit: figured it out. I just had to go to drive manager and initialise it.

it may yet not be formatted: Press windows+R , enter "diskmgmt.msc" + return. Then see if it is listed there as an uninitialized disk. You can then format it there by rightclicking on it

hey guys, I've been lurking here for the past three weeks and just recently got my system. I'm very happy that I chose this over the Y410p I initially had purchased.

thank you all for the reviews and help and everything else, this is great, really!

however I'm trying to install Ubuntu and I cannot for the life of me enter the BIOS. I've tried holding down F2 and pressing the power button and I've tried jamming the button and pressing the power button. every time I try it Windows always loads.
I've tried these methods with all F keys, Esc and Delete.

I've never experienced this before, any ideas?

Make sure you are plugged in, not on battery. The bios shortcut it F2

Unfortunately that doesn't work, just tried it again four times, two holding and two jamming the button. Yes my outlet works, I had it recharging the battery all night.

You could try plugging in some USB-Keyboard [preferably a non-wireless one, as they usually got some initiation time on boot] and press F2 there

Sounds like a hardware or bios issue.
Accessing it has nothing to do with being or not on battery.

Does the "F2 for bios" text appears, and lights up when you press F2 ?
I'd try to disconnect the CMOS battery for 5s.

Interestingly, I had the same problem when I turned it on the first time. I was on battery, plugged it in, and voila! I just tried to go to BIOS on battery now, and now it works. So no idea if actually plugging it in had something to do with in the first place or not.

I haven't tried to plug in a usb keyboard yet. I'll try the cmos battery reset after as well, need to go out for a moment.

And no, the BIOS help screen does not show up when booting. It just shows a sager logo followed by the Win8 loading circle. This is so weird.

That's normal behaviour on UEFI - the Bios-text only shows up when set to bios mode

I don't have a sager, maybe the text doesn't show up on those.

edit: don't use UEFI either =)

BTW, is there any advantage / inconvenient to using UEFI ?

Alright so before I left I did reset the cmos battery. It worked.

But now the boot won't recognize my Windows partition, not in UEFI mode. I gotta go right now and I'll mess with \it again in a few hours. I've never had any problems dealing with a BIOS so this is very weird to me.

I have an external partitioned into a FAT32 and NTFS. Ubuntu is in the NTFS partition. I think I'm going to erase the partitions and format the whole thin to fat and then put ubuntu on it again because it's not recognizing this as a book drive either.

Anyone know where I can get the BIOS from, I'm thinking maybe there's an update? Sager's website doesn't have any download center that I can find.

    EDIT:

So I figured out my issue, when I enabled UEFI again the system booted from the Windows partition again. I'm going to change the boot sequence and, enable UEFI again and then see it it boots from the external.

I'm now also looking for an easier way to get into the BIOS (now that I have UEFI enabled again) without having to reset the Cmos battery again.

    EDIT2:

    found this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxKxNSD0chY

UEFI is nice, I'm just not used to it I guess. My problem is now resolved and I'm installing Linux.

I have to say my favorite thing about the laptop so far is the screen, it's amazing!! Love it, thank again guys.

really pleased with laptop. just checked out i got the chi mei screen AND no dead pixels. probably cos i took the 1 year warranty cover so its easier for them when testing to get it right 1st time why it took a while to get it to me so props ot them for that. also my fan doesnt seem constant. it does THE burst every now and then. but i think i got the original bios. but ill let it stay for now till i actually know if the bios updates have improved this. overall sound when its on load.

i tried out bf3 and got at least 40fps on ultra with some of the other settings like HBAO off 1080p. it looks beautiful. my temps was crazy, for the cpu. around 91-100c for some of the cores. no shut down though at least. i had stock paste whatever that is they use. but ill put some on if i have any problems.

i had recieved a damaged intel ac 7260. intsalled it. went to turn on. nothing happened. i crapped myself. i thought is it cos i left the battery in which i forgot to take out???. i took it out and replaced thinking ill have to send it back. but no its just the faulty card. i see it arrived a bit dented around the raised metal bits. all good now though.
but what i wanna know is what wwan card can we use? rather than filling 2 msata slots on ssd. would like to use wireles internet. and just get a 512gb msata in due time.

It has worst results than intel n135, at least in my case (N router)
Maybe it's better with an AC router.. or with future drivers.

Just tested this on 4700mq @26x, with stock voltages cpu temps are 75~83° at stock voltages, with -110/125/125mv UV cpu temps are 71~75° =)
That is on a flat table, with 05 bios.
Just to confirm what HTwingnut already noticed, 4702 doesn't add anything temps wise. Not sure if power consumption differs though.

    nop, there's not.
this is a clevo update, some people stated that updating to that may prevent sager users to go back to a sager bios.
you can find it on techinferno or prema's site Prema Mod | Giving you the freedom of choice

Just fixed my rattling fan, the fan would make a rattling sound whenever it slowed down as if the blades were rubbing or hitting something, I opened the base of the laptop and loosened the large screws that connected the fan to the motherboard, this seemed to fix the issue for me at least, turns out the fan blades were hitting the metal cover which caused vibrations that would resonate with the case, cheers.

Anyone has any photos on how to add an mSATA drive to this baby? I got mine without mSATA and would like to add one now/soon but when I open it up I can see the mSATA slot, but it doesn't look like the one from the photo first in this thread.. It's just a connector that is ~30mm wide and ~15mm high, do I need to buy something more? Can I connect two mSATA drives here?

Hmm, having some odd behavior here. Up until yesterday everything was fine, temps maxing out around ~80 while gaming. Today, all of a sudden, temps are getting to 98-99 even with fans blasting at max. The air coming out the side doesn't even feel that hot? I'm not sure what could have happened between yesterday and today that's causing this, any thoughts?

Edit: I'm underclocked, back propped up, again, nothing changed really between yesterday and today. I installed the new nvidia drivers, could that be it? I tried rolling back the system to Friday, but still having the high temps.

Have you tilted your laptop differently? Do you have it on the exact same spot/position? I noticed that when I had my laptop on a 35 degree angle on a laptop cooling stand the temps went up to 99 but when I put it flat on the table they went down to 70.. Just a thought.

Can anyone tell me the maximum multicore clock speed on battery for the 4702, my laptop containing the 4800 only goes up to 800mhz when using 3-4 cores or 1600mhz when using 1-2. Tried using throttlestop but my laptop became unstable due to the higher energy drain from increasing the clock, it would be easier if the cpu itself could regulate its power better, also is there any way to unlock the clocking speed of the intel gpu on battery, my laptop caps the gpu at 400mhz on battery which makes things a tad choppy, thanks

I have no idea but a guess is that the air flow is altered so the hot air is stuck in the machine instead of leaving it. I've played around with fans/airflow in my normal desktop computer and the slightest change can mean a huge decrease in temperatures.

I'll have to agree with that, for me, when I tilt it on its side or when I prop the back up at certain angles, the temperature spikes up pretty fast.
I do have relatively good temps though, 70 deg celsius CPU (4700mq, -85mV), 61 deg celsius GPU when playing Civ 5 at max graphics on 1080p (I don't play games like bf3, though)
with ambient temperature at around ~30-32 deg celsius.
Though, instead of using a stand, I've settled for a stool that has lots of small holes in its top to let the fan easily suck in air

Though, do any of you have problems resuming your laptop from sleep? (like crashes, etc.)
As of now, even without any OC'ing or undervolting, I can't resume from sleep without it crashing.
The sequence is kinda like this: standby, (after a while) open lid to wake laptop, backlit flashes for 1s though screen is off, laptop crashes without displaying anything (power light flashes orange) and restarts.

If not, my multipliers aren't locked at all with 4700mq. Can reach the full clock speeds on battery. Didn't test using dGPU yet.

A tape on Fn key should do the trick ;)
Seriously, I'll try to hook those function keys later on (because I'd like to replace airplane mode with wifi on/off, and switch keyboard backlight mode with standby), but I don't think it's easy, if possible at all.

Same here on the 4702, multipliers for cores are locked on 8x and the intel gpu on 4x - but I couldnt complain for now as gaming on battery would suck anyway

I appreciate all the info in the thread! I was all set to order after reading M Wall's recent review. But for anyone running win 7, at native resolution how is the scaling? (I do not use scaling on my present NB, which is full HD but 17") I would guess I would need to use 125%, I would only be using Full HD (native)
