One new question, and one more try at an old one:

Has anybody tried undervolting a 4702? I know it should run cooler than a 4700 with 'stock everything' anyway, but why not save that extra couple sips of battery?

Has anybody tried the Windows 8.1 beta? Specifically, they're supposed to introduce support for dynamic (vector-based?) scaling, instead of the "100% / 125% / 150%" thing that we've had since WinXP. On a screen with such a high pixel density, I'm really hoping I can try that out.

Also: my wife emailed me to say my box showed up today -- can't wait to get home!

hi guys I want some advice , i've placed an order for w230st with 4700mq but the temps are worrying me a little bit. My question is will I be able to undervolt it or stop the clocks at certain point to keep the tempreratures lower? (85c max when gaming) I'm not planning to buy a cooler so its important as I can still change to 4702mq.

Good to know! I'm thinking of ordering a W230ST from PWN PCS too, probably with the 4700 though. How's the performance on the Intel 520 by the way?

I wouldn't install Windows 8.1. Still buggy, and you cannot ensure driver compatibility. Unless you want to become a guinea pig for Microsoft...

Yeah, but I wasn't overclocking, I was undervolting. But the real problem was that yes - I could boot into safe mode ok - but I couldn't run Intel XTU in Safe Mode - it comes up with an error message saying "This programme cannot run in safe mode" (or somesuch). So it was a catch 22. I got around it by booting into low res normal mode (640x480) which luckily worked, then I accessed XTU again and increased the voltage to -70mV from -90mV.

My bad, I should have said overclocking/underclocking.

Well that's certainly good information to know. I never used XTU. I hate programs that are coded to not run in safe mode...

It seems fast, like all SSDs! :) I ran crystal disk mark yesterday at my office, but don't have the results with me - I'll run it again in a sec and repost here.

Also, I tried overclocking the memory (only) on the GPU to +500mhz, but it would hard reset during a 3dmark run. I am running it now at +400mhz memory (only, no GPU core adjustment) and it seems to be running fine...

I can't see why you won't be able to undervolt it to some extent and also limit it to 99% cpu usage (ie prevent turbo boost). Not sure you'll cap at 85C if you're not propping up the back, but I personally wouldn't worry about sustained temps in the high 80s or even low 90s. You don't have to use a laptop cooler - I just use 2 nespresso capsules to prop up the back and it works a treat.

Just got word that my Mythlogic Chaos 1313 (W230ST) laptop is now being shipped to me! YAY!

I'll post pics and thermal numbers (since most people are concerned about this) when I finally get this little monster into my grubby hands.

    Christ, I can't wait!

Here are my crystal scores (2 runs, 100mb: R/W):
    Sequential: 454 / 304
    512kb: 398 / 299
    4kb: 36 / 130
    4kb QD: 287 / 256

Hope this helps. Seems in line with the benchmarks for the 520 on the web.

By the way, gaming at 1600x900 seems indistinguishable to gaming at native 1900x1080 to me. It's awesome.

I've tried this mod on a few machines in the past. It reduces temps initially, then over time it slowly ramps up. Bottom line there needs air to flow over the heatsinks, and to vent out the system to make it worthwhile. With that kind of mod on my W110ER once I pushed air over it, it kept temps lower because the air could dissipate and not just create a hot pocket of air. (mmm hot pockets :p) Plus that laptop is much bigger (17" vs 13") so more air volume and possibly better flow overall.

85C max is pretty good actually, or are you saying that's your bogey? What temps are you running now? Like I've noted numerous times, underclock, undervolt, and limit FPS in games that really push the temps (like BF3 in particular). At 3GHz, -100mV, and limit FPS to 58, my CPU didn't exceed 80C during BF3, and was pegged at 58 fps 99% of the time, with occasional dips to 40's with lots of explosions and action, but popped right back up to 58 after a second or two.

See this one here. It's smaller but on a dark screen it was like an eye looking at me. Photo doesn't show the whole story very well: http://i.imgur.com/XKdkh93.jpg

Normally if your system crashes, when you reboot, it will reset the settings to stock. Sometimes it may take a few reboots, but it will reset.

Surprised it hard locked at +500 since that's really the rated speed of the vRAM, unless this is actually 1.35v vRAM in which case it's already overclocked to 2000 when stock should be 1800. In any case 3DMark is fickle with drivers, and some nVidia drivers are fickle with overclocks. I've had times when I've updated drivers and had a stable OC for months with previous drivers then all of a sudden I couldn't overclock much any more. I think once nVidia starts rolling out drivers with support for 765m we'll see more stable and improved performance.

Nope, that's just the way the image looks for some reason, possibly diffuse reflection. The screen was perfect with only a little backlight bleed in the corner, just that dot in the middle was annoying.

    I'd say bottom 1/4" yes.

I've landed on a safe setup it seems for me and my 4800MQ. Using -70mV undervolt, stock CPU multiplier, GPU core +100mhz, GPU mem +400mhz, my 3dmark scores are (max CPU temp 90C, max GPU temp 67C):
    - Icestorm: 85653
    - Cloudgate: 13590
    - Firestrike: 2605

Went home sick today (am actually sick!) but powered through to get Win8 installed, and I'm almost done with drivers. Just wanted to say:

    * I ordered from HawkForce, and my panel has the hardware ID "CMN1343" which appears to be Chi Mei not-actually-IPS-but-close-enough. Looks awesome!
    * I checked for dead pixels and couldn't find any. No apparent bruising either (!) but a moderate amount of light bleeding in the bottom right corner. Only visible on totally black screen, though, soooo...
    * I haven't had a chance to benchmark anything but Windows 8 boots to login in about 5 seconds (!). I got an M4 and a TB HDD
    * It's just a bit heavier than I expected but it still feels really portable. For now I'm running everything at default (i.e. tiny) font sizes; may or may not bump that up.

If anybody has any Germany / HawkForce specific questions, fire away!

I come from a 17" 1080p monster, so I have just as many pixels in something like 60% the screen size. If I bump the text, for now I'd probably just use in-browser zoom. I've had too many things go wonky when you use the OS-level font sizing. Of course, Win 8.1 claims to fix that, but NVidia doesn't have any mobile drivers that work properly in 8.1 (or so I'm told).

that is my fear. I am using a 6yr old 15.4" inspiron 6400 with the default 100% applied in win 7 control panel and the sizing is perfect for me. as great as the 13" portability is, I think I'd struggle greatly with text beibg too small and the issues it throws up. after moving on from the idea of gettung the 230st I was considering the alienware 14 but now think even that may not large enough?

I've never used anything bigger than 1366 res on 13.3 laptop I should be getting my w230st next week with full HD IPS panel after much consideration cause I had an option for 1600x900 but was told that IPS is so nice that I paid extra, time will tell if I like it so small or not (thats what she said)

Am I being thick here? I installed the iGPU drivers, then the Nvidia drivers that came with the computer, and while it says something about showing Optimus status in the system tray. I see a green Nvidia logo, but it doesn't seem to "indicate" anything as far as I can tell. I have a context menu for running an individual program with the dGPU, but I run Steam all the time and I'm told that this is one of the "problem" programs that will keep the dGPU active all the time. How can I tell? How can I fix it?

You need to enable the indicator in the nvidia control panel in one of the drop down menus.
The activity indicator will change to rainbowish color when the dGPU is being used.
You can also click on the indicator and it will show what is using the dGPU.

When I initially ran a couple steams games it would automatically select the intel 4600 instead of the 765m. I went into the nvidia program and manually selected my 765m to be the default for each game.

The trick was that I thought I'd turned on the "show indicator" option but I hadn't. :(

Once I got that, it's a little black square that (as you say) turns "rainbow-ish". Thanks!

Wing - The Windows7 drivers for the Intel Wireless AC works fine. Software Upgrade

Run the setup under the Windows7 directory and it will open up the installer and you should notice in the bottom right taskbar the wireless will go in and out while it configures everything. If you can't get it to work let me know and I will find the exact files I used but that is the download package that finally worked for me.

I installed and it detected the hardware just fine but then it would never show any available wireless networks. At this point I've installed Windows 8 and have it configured well with third party start menu, so I'l stick with what I have. Thanks though. Maybe I'll give it another shot later.

Well mine showed up after the ups guy got his thumb out. (New guy. Apparently went on a field trip before realizing oh hay deliveries on this block.)

Ordered with Windows 8 pro, metro sucks even more than I remembered.

Screen looks OK on brief first view, but general metro uselessness defeated any further delving ATM.

Much nicer size and weight versus my 8250-s. Wingnut was correct that 11" would've likely been to small.

Got delta electronics power supply. Don't recall about hearing about them or chicony for that matter.

Project shield also showed up today but no joy on PC game streaming yet. Nexus 7 showed on Monday, nice.

Enough for now phone entry is painful even with swiping.

...and an almost entirely unrelated note, nvidia cocked up fw release which at some point between roughly now and c. 11A EDT appeared which leads to as functional pc game streaming as it gets ATM...

AS to fixing win8, it's waiting until tomorrow, which is fine as I have a funny feeling that I'll be buying some msata ssds tomorrow or not long after and re-installing...

7330 specific: Yet again I'm NOT an initial fan of the keyboard, but perhaps it will grow on me like the 8250's keyboard.... time will tell...

I love the keyboard compared to my Asus G46VW. On that machine, the space bar would not respond if I did not press it hard enough (since the day I got it), whereas this one understands that I don't need to smash my keyboard to type seamlessly.

Oh, and the screen... wow. This thing is synonymous with beauty.

Well, my 7330 anything that hits the nv GPU kicks up the fans to, I guess, max...

e.g. GPUZ -> pick nv GPU...

o.w. on basic win8 pro install/balanced/batt CPUs are now c. 53C, although right hand side/wrist rest(?) feels QUITE warm.

via hwinfo/etc. looks like the 16GB is again patriot 1600 2x8GB

750GB hdd is yet again a craptacular seagate drive

Screen is the Chi Mei, but hwinfo says something about unknow mode(IIRC)....

    [EDIT]
Oh yes, in case you missed above, PSU is Delta Electronics(July 2013 build date)... no idea if these guys or the Chicany(?) were "better" v. my 8250-s coming with an FSP PSU whom I knew of good quality desktop PSUs a few years back, so...

Be aware: if you turn on the "one finger scrolling" option for horizontal scrolling, the bottom of the pad becomes a "deadzone" unless you're using it for horizontal scrolling. I see no reason to turn on one-finger scrolling when you have the option for two-finger scrolling. Be aware, though, when I first installed my drivers it was set to "reverse" scrolling, but the checkbox for that option was *not* checked. I toggled it a few times and it started working the way it should, though.

What about something more in the lines of this.
I'm guessing changes would be dramatic if just a little bit of the heatsink comes out of the chasis, plus it doesn't seem too complicated to do, I mean, it's just making a hole and sticking the heatsinks to the heatpipe right? (given that the cpu and gpu have kind of easy access).
    One pick from the link..

LOL. If you want a massive heatsink jetting down from the bottom of your laptop, say goodbye to it being a "laptop", and snagging and scraping on things. I really don't think that extreme is necessary unless you want to seriously overclock the CPU. So far my experience has been that undervolt and underclock even a little, and prop the back end helps temperatures immensely.

I fussed with Win 7 a bit more and I think I've narrowed it down to the SB Cinema causing a BSOD. Problem is I can't install it completely because it will crash. But it's installed enough to start up at boot and will cause a crash. So I can't uninstall it because it never gets complete enough to put a listing in the add/remove programs, so I have to completely reinstall Windows. I'm going to do another install when I get a chance and avoid SB Cinema altogether and see how it goes.

BTW those wi-fi drivers did work great. Thanks. I had another set but for some reason they just weren't working on that machine, although they work fine on my NP9150.

run in safe mode F8 and uninstall then maybe? or does it happen there as well?. I will be getting w230st next week and still can't decide which system I should go for as both need tweaking win7 driver and win8 to make it look like win7 and disabling alot of stuff

OK, I'm 99% certain now it's the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Drivers. I installed various ones (yes and ones provided) all with BSOD.

edit: downloaded 12.5.0.1066 directly from Intel's site and seem to have no issues so far.

In case I didn't mention it enough yet, the size of this thing is just awesome... so capable, yet so much more portable than the 8250, which makes it look tiny and feel as light as a feather...

Anyways, I need to make a bootable win8 USB install disk(I expect that I'll break things) now and then attempt one of the godawful metro ui exorcising mods. (I essentially have most of this morning to attempt to correct win8 deficiencies, just hope that I can get it to a state that I like w/whichever of the start mods ends up being my preferred, which I assume will likely need fresh installs maybe, but we'll see...)

Are the drivers THAT different from win8 to win8.1 ??
Someone stated that there was no nVidia drivers working with 8.1 yet, and that's what I'm planning to use..

Are you using the drivers from the Nvidia website?
