Just a relatively minor point but I notice that my order had specifically listed:
13.3” Full HD 16:9 Wide Screen (1920x1080) LED-Backlit Chi Mei AAS ( Azimuthal Anchoring Switching) Matte

    [EDIT]
...and I suppose that I should add that this is a Sager NP7330 purchased through lpc digital...

So, at this point it's likely safe to assume that they're still getting W230Ts with Chi Mei panels, or at least Sager is and presumably the other builder who also claim that screen...

Guys...My w230st came in today and she's a beauty...but she has given me a heart attack already.

I tried turning it on but it wouldn't so I was about to post here asking for help when I saw that the left side of the back casing was popped out couple mm. I unscrewed the cover and popped it back in and now it turns on :)

My idle temperature is at 50Cish but the fan comes on every now and then periodically...but it's really loud when it's on. Is there any way to manage the fan?

On your power option, you can set the fan to passive instead of active on power saver or balanced mode. I only use active on high performance when gaming/benchmarking.

I have two desks at home, both are wood-like material on one of them my current laptop (Fujitsu AH530), when idle is 45C-50C, on the other it's about 5C higher no matter what I do.
    Take this into consideration.

Neither 326.19 nor 320.49 nVidia drivers will install ("Could not find compatible graphics...).

    Has anyone found a solution?

Can you check if it is coming from your speakers? I am having some similar issues with the speakers.

    My Sager Noise:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dGM9OLX_jY&feature=youtu.be

The noise isn't actually that loud, but it is audible.
That alien-like noise is probably due to some noise reduction filter on my phone.

    My GT60 Noise

This one is actually pretty loud if you hear it in person.

Yes, I posted on this already several pages back. Get a modified INF off laptopvideo2go for their latest driver and overwrite the nvwin file and any flavor driver you choose should install. I did run into weird issues where the screen would flash, almost like optimus had a hard time sorting out what it wants to use and then it will go away. Another option is to go into the control panel and set it to the Nvidia card and that should fix it as well. This mainly was occuring after the LCD turned off and back so if you leave your LCD on 24/7 you won't experience any problems.

I got tired of the flashing and downloaded the Windows 8 drivers off Clevo's website for Nvidia 64-bit last night and they install fine under WIndows 7 and I can confirm there is no flashing or anything you have to do with the INF to get them to install.

For whatever it is worth, I modified the INF file for my specific hardware ID to see if the flashing was because of a bad device ID and it still did it so there is something in particular with this Clevo driver that makes everything "just work." You can also copy the INF file from the Clevo driver and use it on a newer set if you wish following the same procedure using the laptopvideo2go file.

Got mine from XoticPC. Chimei screen. No dead pixels and no issues with screen as in bruising and such. Replaced thermal paste with CoolLaboratory Liquid Ultra (I've literally have used every thermal compound) and my idle temps are about high 40's low 50's. I just installed battlefield 3 and civ 5, but about to go to boston on a flight. I'll test battery while I am in the air with civ 5 and see.

I put 2 Plextor 5m5 256gig msata drives in Raid 0. Boot time is literally 7 seconds until I am in windows screen.

I installed the newest NVidia drivers doing a modification of the inf. I've had to do this for my HP notebook with the quadtro to get the regular drivers to work. I also had issues with the screen. IF I close the lid and opened it back up it would have all kinds or artifacts on the screen. Reverting back to the sager drivers fixed this. IF you look at the hardware ID it will have 230 written into while if you look at the NVidia.com driver site there is no hardware id that has 02301558. Maybe specific to our w230st Who knows

I also get the clicking like a hard drive is in there. It is from the fan. I also get squelching from the speakers but that is normal. This can only be heard if my ear is next to the speaker. I can hear the clicking faintly having it on my lap

Try the NVCV file from Clevo and make sure these lines are in there:

    NVIDIA_DEV.11E1.0376.1558 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M"
    NVIDIA_DEV.11E1.5106.1558 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M "

Were you able to get the laptopvideo2go INF to work?

Guys been messing around with mine and I love it. Only problem is one dead pixel bottom left corner. Very rare do I ever notice it. Its running awesome and the 4800 has been holding up well. The 4800 clocks up to 2.7 Ghz on all 4 cores. My temps range 45 -50 idle and about 85 in gaming on the CPU. I bought the coolermaster laptop tablet and it brings my CPU temps down to low 70's when gaming. I just played Diablo 3 (using Play on Linux) for 2 hours and the highest it got was 73 on the CPU. I am running Linux Kerner 3.9.11-1. Bumblebee is holding up well and I am loving it. Using Manjaro as my distro and I have to say I am so impress with it. Ill post some pics and games running in Steam on the Linux forum tomorrow.

    Very happy with my purchase.

So I did some testing tonight to see if I could lower the temps without any backplane modifications. I had some true copper heatsinks with thermal backing purchased awhile back for my xbox 360 and they looked about the right size so I figured I'd give them a shot to see if they could help. Placement options are very limited so I pretty much tried them in the main places I could get them to fit and as close to the openings as possible. Overall testing showed my idle temps were lower by 4 degrees initially but once they heated up my temps were actually worse by almost 2-3 degrees. I verified this twice by removing them and recording the temps then adding them back and both times the results were the same.

Just an FYI for anyone thinking of paying extra to have this added to their builds.

Thanks for sharing this rancid. I've found too that those heatsinks don't help much. Only way they do is if additional airflow is introduced into the system to blow across those heatsinks, then it's quite effective. I'd like to put some over the vRAM heatsink plate, but then again, it's probably more limited by voltage than temperature anyhow.

Here you have moddified .inf file for beta NVIDIA 326.19 Drivers, it works flawlessy I prepared it directly for W230ST. Cheers.

Replace nvcvn.inf file in /Display.Driver folder.

would a 4900mq underclocked to run at the speed of a 4800mq run cooler than a stock 4800mq? would it under-volt further?, if cost is of no concern would buying a 4900mq help temperatures?, the laptop seems to run very hot, thanks

Damn, I hope mine is just as easy :)

Oh damn, that's pretty loud. Have you tried messing with the speakers properties in your volume options? Go to the enhancements tab and make sure nothing is checked off? Or try going to the advanced tab and changing the default format to 16 bit, 44100 hz (CD Quality)? IIRC messing with those settings fixed that issue I had in my HP laptop a few years ago.

After you do the "ping ping" thing in the volume bar, and then you play some music from winamp/youtube, does the white noise go away? Or can you hear it through the music?

How does one affix those copper heatsink/shims to the computer? Are we supposed to solder 'em? Thermal tape? Thermal pads? Just lay 'em on? Please advise da newbs, thanks :)

GREAT NEWS for UK buyers: Spoke to a PC Spec representative on Friday (second time lucky) and they have confirmed that you CAN order the w230st with 2 x mSATAs! Also they will deduct the 250gb HD if you don't want it. You have to order online, config the laptop with the 1 mSATA available and then call afterwards to make the changes. PHEW! No rust-drives and I get my RAID mirror. Now there's nothing between my bank acct and this laptop...

The best mSata they offer is the crucial M4 256gb. Are these any good?

I am glad I am not the only Linux user. Some note don't pick the Intel 7260, the drivers for it are not ready yet. You can make them work but you will need to recompile a new kernel. ( that will bring you headaches with the proprietary nvidia drivers) Stick with the 1202 from killer or the Intel wifi card under the 7206.

Battery live I have not tested yet but I can say it has lasted at-least 2 hours. (my guess it will be 3.5 to 4) I can also say my CPU is at 800 mhz when just in desktop surfing. All the functions keys work ACCEPT for the brightness control. I have not mess with that yet. See for more information on the linux forums soon.

    Thanks

No idea... peanuts probably, but its the principle of having to pay for something you don't want when you're spending >£1k with a custom pc builder :D

What's wrong with Kingston Hyper-X 1600 Mhz RAM? What are you using?

This might be a very weird question to ask but here it goes ;) :

I really like the W230st in terms of specs, material, looks, etc but I am afraid the 13" is a bit too small for me. Is there some model on the market (or is there going to be one) which has the same advantages of the W230st but is available in 15"?

Nothing wrong, but since it's so easy and less expensive I prefer to buy RAM separately and install it myself.
Plus, I don't know if that kingston one is DDR3L, and I'll definitely go with the lower voltage memory.

The impression I got is that the configurator doesn't have the last word... but you may want to clarify whether you can opt-out of specific parts. And as you know, you may need to check twice.

You guys are aware of the geforce.com thread to submit device IDs to nVidia for addition to the drivers right? By now I should think that the latest beta drivers should install w/o problems as I seem to recall seeing a request already for W230ST/Clevo 765m...

Well you're talking 1C to 2C less heat at best. And get one of the Logitech N315 lapdesks. They work great, and are cheap, and retractable mousepad is great for the mouse, and best of all, keeps heat away from your lap.

Did you run any test ?
Currently reading about ddr3L, one review noticed a 4W (idle) & 9W (full) difference for the whole system between 1.35V & 1.65V on a desktop PC.

Can't find any measurement on temps though, but this manufacturer is stating up to 10°C

First of all, that's desktop RAM. Laptop RAM won't even draw close to 4W power as it is.

    And see these tested differences:

Technology Primer: Low Voltage RAM - Puget Custom Computers

Benchmark Results: System Power Consumption And Single-Thread Efficiency - How Much Power Does Low-Voltage DDR3 Memory Really Save?

Puget systems compared 1.65v vs 1.35v vs 1.25v using an Intel i7-3770k

Toms Hardware testing 1.5v vs 1.35v vs 1.25v using an AMD Phenom II

Result at idle was pretty much negligible. Puget Systems review at peak it was 3.7% between 1.35v and 1.65v with 1C system temp difference, and Tom's Hardware run was 1.7%. So realistically you'll see 1.5% reduction in power consumption at load. And those results are all using much higher power and heat desktop components. So on the laptop, if the RAM is drawing 4W, that means 0.06W power reduction.

And yes I have tested it and there is negligible power draw difference or effective heat generated between the two.

I've tried almost every combination. I tried changing to 16bit 44100hz, disabled/enabling enhancements, disabling all other sound devices including recording, but the noise is still there.
The noise is still there when music is playing, although I can only hear it when the music volume is low since its not too loud.
The noise does not get louder when I increase my volume.

I also tried uninstalling the sound drivers but it didn't make a difference.

I am still having trouble with sound blaster cinema, I know someone had resolved the issue by stating that both cinema and via audio drivers had to be re-installed, but the drivers i found for via audio would not properly install, and i was unable to find a "driver" for cinema. If anyone has the proper links to both that would be amazing, also i reconfigured some settings for the audio and it now sounds perfect, wit just the base via audio! Any other driver info for other components would also be greatly appreciated! btw people had been asking for temps, and my gpu was running around 80 c max on ultra 1600 x 900p and the same for high settings @ 1920 x 1080p in bf3, and 46 on idle. i also had the ic diamond compound on my laptop. the only hot spots i have encountered are around the "j" key and the right palm rest next to the track pad but it wasn't unbearable heat.

    Hi,

I have a question about Intel XTU: does need to run in background? Or settings are stored in bios/firmware so I can use Linux and downvoltage?

    Best regards.

The VIA Audio drivers and SB Cinema software (it's not drivers) are on the drivers disk and Clevo's Website.

    What CPU do you have?

Set it and forget it. Once you click "apply" it changes it in the BIOS.

I fixed mine under Windows7 finally. Go to Clevo's website and download the VIA HD audio driver package for Windows8/Windows7 and reinstall, reboot, the SB Cinema should be working. I had the Cinema installed as well off Clevo's website before I updated the VIA driver and it fixed it. My drivers disc that came with the laptop does not allow for the video card or the SB CInema to install, the rest works fine off the disc.

Dookie - The heatsinks have thermal tape on the back which is sticky when heated up, that is what allows them to stick to the heatpipes. I wouldn't bother with it, nor would I pay to have the cooling system upgraded from a 3rd party vendor unless it is modifying the backpanel with another fan. Undervolting and a laptop cooler are the best things so far to help with the heat IMO. The problem I am running into with undervolting is the Intel app will default back to stock voltage after awhile and I haven't found a way to force it to stay at whatever you set it to.

Undervolt a little bit less and see if it resets over time. Mine has only reset after a CTD or hard crash.

SB Cinema would actually blue screen with Windows 7 install and I couldn't get the Intel 7260 AC wifi card to work either. So I'm sticking with Win 8 for now with startisback start menu.

HTWIng I'm about to order w230st and wanted your proffesional opinion. I would like to go for 4700mq and to my understanding i will be able without much trouble undervolt it to make to cooler like 4702mq. Or should I just get 4702mq? Thanks in advance

p.s. Is there any cpu and gpu throttle some guy mentioned on other fourms ? He said GPU throttle is fixable by o/c the GPU which makes little sense to me
