Is there any way I can improve the battery life of the clevo to something more palatable like 5 hours? Any way at all? I'm going to uni and I want to use this laptop for both gaming and work, I don't mind briefly compromising performance of the laptop while I do school related things.

Solved: Like Wingnut said, you have to 1st install the VIA audio driver, followed by the Creative. Then it works fine.

I've also got the same issue. Whenever I launch Soundblaster Cinema from the notification area, it says there's no compatible hardware. I'll post up a solution once I figure it out. Anyone else have this happen, and what did you do?

I wonder if this includes our purchases from XoticPC too?

You married a wonderful lady :) That cooler is the perfect size, but I'm wondering if getting a U2 or U3 would be more beneficial since we could reposition the fans?

Also could you by any chance check to see if you got that "Chi Mei" IPS screen (same that HTWingnut got)? Thanks and congratz!

My PayPal account is American, and I think it sets off some kind of security measure to make a "large" payment to an overseas vendor. I'm opening a German PayPal account but it takes a day or two...

I think I asked this elsewhere already, but has anybody tried to run the Win8.1 preview on one of these? A previous post mentioned improved hardware scaling, and I think that'd be a really nice feature to have on a high-DPI screen like this. I'm getting a "rust drive" plus SSD -- maybe I could dual-boot 8 and 8.1? For that matter, as long as I get installation media with it, I could install 8.1 right away and roll back in the event of a problem...

I can try but it's 3.5GB of data. Funny thing is that Win 7 drivers were on a DVD-R not a mastered DVD, lol. They must have had to do it at the last minute. I don't know if it's allowed to host Sager's drivers without their permission though.

Got mine yesterday, but been very busy since I got em.
Not much time spent on the little beast.

Only manage to try out 3DMark11.

I'm quite impressed with the temp though.
Luckily mine doesn't turn out like one of our owner here from singapore.

Here are the test (ambient 26c-28c):

    CPU Turbo boost enabled :

    CPU Turbp boost disabled :

Edit : My bad. The guy from singapore doesn't have any issues running 3DMark11, but CPU intensive game(BF3).
Hopefully mine doesn't shut down too. :p

Wing - Have you found a way to force the core voltage to stay at whatever values you set with the intel extreme tuning app? I've noticed no matter what I set mine to, eventually it will revert back to the default voltage. I tried using the static setting instead of adaptive and it will freeze/reboot my laptop no matter what values I use.

    Thx.

This is confusing. This is what I got: "I am sorry to say that our system will not allow us to do this with mSATA drives which is why it is not an option on the website." It is a shame, as I would choose PC Specialist... Also damned nuisance about the 250GB HDD I don't want it either! Surely they can just take it out and deduct the value (peanuts)

Well my order through lpc placed on Friday has just changed to final testing. I went cheap o ground shipping this time so I expect that I'll get it some time next week. Wednesday might be a busy day for me as I'm already expecting my shield and nexus 7 then.

I think they get the barebones and add components themselves, since those differs from one shop to another.
Sager is a reseller, those shops are builders no ?

Sager BIOS tend to be pretty sparse from what I've seen.

I remember an easy way to disable turbo: go to the power options>advanced and set the max CPU state to 99%. To enable turbo again, just set it back to 100%. Not sure if this still works though.

I'm having a similar issue with this laptop as I did with my MSI laptop.

I have white/static noise coming through my speakers even when they are set to mute. (My MSI laptop's noise was literally 3x louder, probably because the speakers were a lot better)
Can someone try putting their ear up against the speaker hole at the bottom of the laptop, then use the windows volume control to make that *ding* sound to see if it triggers any noise?
The white noise volume varies. Sometimes loud, sometimes quiet. Once you trigger the noise, putting the volume level to mute does not help.
Only after like 1 minute without actual sound, it will go away.

Yeah that's a good workaround. Although Prema's at work on an updated BIOS, hopefully will include that feature. I just gotta get my butt in gear to get to testing it out.

    Buy a second battery. :p

No, I'm sure there will be ways to improve. I am a bit disappointed in battery life as well. With Optimus this thing should suck no more than 13-14W max while on power saver and 20-30% screen brightness. That should equate to easily over four hours.

    Just ordered this from Mythlogic.

Went with a 4702 based on HTwingnut saying in one of the threads it's a good pick for a stock user who'd otherwise get a 4700. Thanks for that btw HT, that was one of the spec options driving me crazy.

8 gb ram, Samsung 841 256gb ssd, 1 tb 7200 hdd, intel 7260 wifi. I think it's a good config, after I placed the order the guy there was answering all my questions said this is what he spec'd for his own unit.

I'll be going to this from a 1st gen HP Envy 17 (1st gen entry level i7 and amd 5850) which I was perfectly happy with, but I wanted some thing smaller. I'm not expecting a huge boost in power, but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Anyway, anyone know if this will fit in a Slappa rubber sole sleeve? Amazon.com : Slappa SL-NSV-127 15.4-Inch Rubber Sole Netbook Sleeve (Black) : Electronics The sleeve is for a 15.6 but it's only 1.2" and I think this latop is 1.3"?

I've heard rumors that Schenker will have them in about 2 weeks. Hawkforce.de has them right now -- I ordered, and I think it's set to ship out as soon as I fix my broken PayPal account. They have a user on these boards ("HawkForce") and he's offering €50 off if you PM him before ordering, for the next week or so.

    Hi.

I will be ordering mine today/this weekend. But I have three questions:
    1) linux support ? Does anyone installed linux on this laptop ? Can you use bootalbe usb and run ubuntu desktop and tell us if basic devices (trackpad, keyboard and backlight, shortcuts etc) and if you have extra 30 min run steam with some 3d game for gpu??
    2) windows 7 - is it working ok ? all features (maybe without new intel wi-fi - i will buy 6235 dual band)
    3) does anyone know where I can get Crucial 480 gb MSATA[!!!] drive in Europe today? It is listed on Amazon.co.uk with great price and shipping in 3 to 6 weeks :/ I really need it faster :/ Or maybe other drive ? 480 or 512 is minimum for me and i need it to be msata.

I would be very grateful for quick answers :)

I originally bought an MSI GE40 a while ago before I had found out that the W230ST was available. I couldn't justify another purchase, so I tried something I had never tried before - I bought the Clevo barebones - completely empty.

Moved my i7-4900, 2x Plextor 256 mSATA, 1 Segate 1TB drive, and 16GB of Kingston memory over. Fiddled with the bios settings to enable RAID. On first reboot it didn't recognize the RAID 0 mSATAs. On second reboot, the Intel RAID BIOS appeared and it booted into Windows 7.

I was prepared to do a complete re-install, but I didn't have too. Just put on all of the proper drivers and it's working like a charm. Very happy with the W230ST. The screen is so much better than the MSI GE40. By feel, it seems a little bit heavier, but much more solid. Happy to have a backlit keyboard.

Im having some trouble finding one of these with an IPS screen as standard in the UK. So far none of the UK resellers ive been to make any mention of an IPS screen in the specifications. Ive spoken with PCSpecialist and they confirmed that their model does not have an IPS panel. Whats going on over here in the UK?

    @Amal

You mentioned that your i7-4700mq temps are under 90c when gaming/benchmarking at stock clocks without any mods or cooling, how come rlrh, htwingnut and some others are getting 99c on their cpu temps?

Remember i'm talking about the first test you did and not after when you had to put a stand or cooling or repasting or whatever, i'm talking about when you just got your w230st and you did your initial test with the 3dmark11 and you posted a screenshot and your cpu temps didn't even exceed above 89c.

Why are the others after running just 3dmark11 or several minutes of a game, the cpu shoots up to 99c and with rlrh at 100c and yours stays a lot cooler in the 80s?

Another thing for all w230st owners, does your fan make a noise like a grating/grinding noise the same kind of sound like a mechanical drives does? I only have an SSD inside so the only moving part inside my w230st is the fan and I hear this grating noise.

There are no IPS panels in w230st.
It's an IPS-like screen, apparently called AAS ( Azimuthal Anchoring Switching).

PCSpecialist should have it, since they told me they're shipping it with the CHI MEI INNOLUX panel.

IPS is just a trademark name owned by LG for a type of screen technology, but everyone refers to screens of that type as IPS because they are using almost the exact same tech. Kinda like the same way everyone refers to every tissue as a Kleenex.

I don't think the rest are having high temp on 3DMark11.
It is those games that highly rely on CPU speed.

I haven't fully test mine yet on those games, and I suspect I might have temp reaching 90c and above with the CPU turbo boost enabled.
Currently popping in my old Sager NP8150 HDD, with most games outdated, and haven't had the chance to re-update it back home. :p

Well RLRH and me, a simple 3dmark06 and 3dmark11 which takes 5-10 min to complete and my cpu reaches 99c core and idles at 50-55c. Are you telling me that after you ran a simple 3dmark11 or 3dmark06, your cpu temps never goes above 89c? See this is why i'm asking you if yours is like that before you did any of the mods or whatever, all i'm asking is when you did it @ stock no cooling mod, no lifting the bottom none of that etc..

Can you do a simple test for me, say a 3dmark06 or 3dmark11 which takes 5-10 min to complete if you have time. Do this test with your i7-4700mq and everything stock and no voltage adjustment and no disabling turbo boost and just sit the laptop flat on the table without any cooling pad or mod or that raises the laptop and please tell me your cpu core max temp and gpu. Thanks

The first test I did was without any adjustment on anything, all at stock, with the turbo boost enabled, and on a flat surface without cooling pad or anything.

    .
    Copy Paste :
So, max CPU is 86c and Max GPU of 64c.

Yeah your cpu at 86c is the perfect temperature after running that 3dmark11, but I do not understand why mine is 99c after 3dmark06 or 3dmark11 with the same conditions as yours. What could possibly be wrong?
