Judging from the cooling system pics posted a few pages back, I don't see how it would handle a 47W CPU at full load (at full load it actually goes into 60W range). The 100c temps seem very real even with a good paste and extra copper. A single 6-8mm flattened pipe of such a length won't cut it. I've been down that road many times. Tried slapping copper heatsinks on pipes and even wrapping them with pyrolytic graphite sheets - no go. So, if you don't want to disable turbo boost to keep temps at bay, 2 piped solution is required.

This LG display that was found a while ago has been transferred to the W110ER by a Chinese person. There's a thread about it (we badly translated it from Chinese). We're not sure if it's true IPS (although it's said to be), it might be MVA/PVA, which is a huge improvement over the TN panel that we have at the moment. It's single channel LVDS, with 8-bit colour. I think the pin pitch is slightly out, but the person in this thread has used some sort of extension I think, which may have solved the issue. There is another screen that is 6-bit colour but should be a straight swap straight into the W110ER as it has perfect pin pitch (0.5mm).

I'd probably be happy with the upgrade either way, the standard screen on the W110ER is pretty damned low quality, so anything is an improvement.

So has anyone tried using Power Management Advanced Options to change the Minimum/Maximum Processing Power? If its possible to decrease the maximum to a certain level, it may keep the processor to an acceptable performance level without going too hot. Can try testing by every 5-10% decrease at maximum using Balanced power settings.

Yep. I'm not at ALL liking the looks of temps beyond the idles, given that he was 30C and above 50C idling. My 8250 in similar temps + high humidity was staying under 50C.

I'd also like to see the Intel PCH temps on this as running Borderlands 2 for .5h or so (GD xp "optimized") had the PCH up to 90C (c. 76F ambient), rest of the temps seemed OK(forgot to record them) but that PCH temp concerned me to the point that I wonder if there's space to add a HS(component/ram like people did to ARM SoCs) to it... OTOH I suppose that even though it's theoretically possible to play demanding games at max settings that it might in the interests of longevity wise to dial back to lesser, less thermally stressful settings.

I was VERY close to ordering one of these as soon as it popped on xotic, but I'm really glad of waiting now... (I don't need it immediately, and could probably just deal with the bricklike 8250 porting but the 7330 would be a much nicer size overall... don't get me wrong the 8250 is a nice change from 17" but still a little big/bulky/"heavy"...)

So... it looks like I'll have to leave Turbo Boost on my W230ST permanently disabled?

If I re-enable it, it'll just go back go nearly 100 degrees again.

I'll wait for the cooling upgrade from my reseller and test the temps again.

The staff did say the cooling upgrade would be designed in-house, though,
Not sure what it exactly is though.

Funny how Digital Storm praises the cooling system on the Veloce - "Zero thermal problems"... Unless it's a custom one

First of all I do not want to start any flame wars. Hope this can be objectively looked at. I currently have an Alienware m11x R2 with core i7 U640 @1.2ghz, 4.0gb ram, 320gb HDD, and nVidia geforce gt335m. Basically stock as it was offered way back when in 2010 when I got it.

It has been a workhorse and mobile as a tablet. Only issues have been the hinges (got replaced along with screen and keyboard). The keyboard got replaced cause I had a super duper additional warranty and they changed it because the left arrow key was stuck and a little worn out.

Anyways to my point. I play total annihilation, supreme commander, StarCraft 2, half life 2, age of empires 3, civilization V, Americas army. Would like to play in the near future the battlefield series, dishonored and crysis and all the new ones as they come out. I was thinking on replacing my system with a new Alienware 14 with i7 4700 CPU, geforce gtx765m but then I wondered into this thread and read about the sager np7330. I like the size of the system compared to the alienware. Physical size and the close to 2lbs less is an advantage this system has. However the temp I've been reading are putting me off.
My m11x r2 while is not as powerful of a system is pretty freaking compact, so I decided to test and stress it for kicks and fun and to compared that what I'll get can stay cool under pressure. M11x r2 ran furmark for a solid 10 mins and GPU never passed 75c. Room temp is 78f. I also test CPU for 10 mins using prime95 and it never went pass 60c. Ive never touch any overclocking or undervolting for any components.

Finally my question is, alienware 14 or sager NP 7330. I realized this is sager and maybe biased towards it but please try to be objective. No flame war, just opinions, experiences, comments, all welcome. Thanks in advance.

First of all, you can't compare the M11x R2 with the W230ST. A four generation old 18W dual core CPU in the M11x R2 vs a current gen quad core 47W CPU. That's like 2.5 times the TDP and about ten times the performance. Same about the GPU with the 335m that even the 4600 IGP in these CPU's alone are at least double the performance, and the 765m is about five to six times the performance.

The Alienware 14 weighs a full two pounds more, and is nearly the size of a 15" notebook. So they're not even in the same class IMHO. If you're looking at the Alienware 14 then consider other 15 inch notebooks instead of 13 or 14 inch notebooks because they are sure to cost the same and have better performance. Heck the Sager NP8250 isn't much bigger than the M14x and comes with the 770m and much better cooling than either the NP7330 or Alienware 14 (why did they go away from the M14x moniker?).

xD I think most people here don't value abstract things like brand names over concrete numbers and figures that represent the laptop so don't worry too much about subjectivity.

I was considering the alienware 14 too but I ordered w230st because I got better parts for the money with it and most importantly, the w230st is little over 4 pounds when the alienware 14 is over 6 pounds. I have a large 15.6 laptop now that weights like 7 pounds and I wanted more mobility with my next laptop. I need to look up exact figures but I think alienware is also thicker.

Just look at the first post of this thread where I compare other machines. The M14x is 0.7kg heavier and 10mm thicker not to mention 30mm deeper and slightly wider.

I appologize if I came out like that. I wasn't intending on comparing the CPU or GPU from my little guy with these monster cpu and gpu of current generations. My intention is to try to get the best system blending size, performance, price and dimensions. I would like to stay away from the 15" just due to sheer size and weight even though I understand that's where the best combo is due to sheer cooling power on that size.

I will look into the Sager NP8250 but I think its size will put me off. Maybe not. What I like about my m11x and what I want to achieve here with my replacement is cool as a cucumber gaming and I don't mean cpu & gpu temps. I never even knew what the temps were till I decided to stress them out today. I like the fact that the top side of the lap to stays cool or just slightly warm. Nothing hot at all. I know today's components heat up more, a lot more but cooling design has to stay on par or otherwise this is a dying breed besides the behemoth 15 chassis and back breaking 17"+ sizes.

    Anyone else received their W230ST?

I'm really hoping to see if other W230STs have cooling problems, trying to find out if it's a design problem or mine was a bad egg (or maybe the thermal paste just wasn't applied well).

I don't have any thermal paste, I need to bring it back to the store to do it, anyway it's free under warranty.
Also, I need to bring it back anyway to change the wireless card to the Bigfoot Killer 1202, which I ordered, but wasn't put inside because they ran out of stock for that, so they replaced it with the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235.

Well, I just posted keyboard temps in first post (it will be updated regularly) and temps at WSAD were only 37C, the IOPJKL area of the keyboard was 47C. Palmrest and everywhere else were 37C after a 20 minute gaming session with BF3 which taxes the CPU and GPU extensively.

So rlrh temps went as high as 100c while HT temps went as high as 90c and both of these are running in normal stock and default clocks/voltage with cpu turbo boost on?

If that is the case then there is probably a defect on rlrh w230st what do you guys think? rlrh did you ask your reseller to replace it with another one?

SO I was wondering if I use 2msata cards for storage and leave the HDD bay alone, if the bottom casing could be modified with air vents and a fan put into there, or even some heatpipes to go over there with fins and fan. Just curious.

Doesn't the GPU simply transfer heat to the CPU, thus making the CPU reach higher temps when both are active? Or were you talking about something else?

I think the CPU would reach higher temps when both are active, because they share a common heatsink and fan, so it has to cool more heat density. I am going to repaste tonight and inspect the heatsink more closely to make sure there is nothing wrong, but I don't think so.

What do you guys think the difference in gaming is between the 4700/4800/4900qm?

Allright folks, I'm in. I ordered through LPC for one reason: no restocking fee in case of return and a full 30-day return period. I was also seriously considering mythlogic and RJ Tech, look like great companies but they had restocking fees and (for RJ Tech) only 15 days return. Also appreciate the fact that LPC doesn't say "gaming" on the home page (for the first few moments, anyway... it eventually does manage to get the word on there)

I got the 4700MQ + 16GB. I plan to separately get two fast mSATA SSD and install the OS on RAID0 onto them. Should be a good adventure---I hope to be able to get at least 700MB/sec sequential assuming I spring for the Samsung PRO series mSATA.

If it works out, I will also get a SquareTrade ADH warranty.

Has anyone who ordered from Xoticpc received theirs yet? Do we know which LED panel is going to be in that one?
