Speaking of CPUs anyone have the i5 and explain any reason on having it? Apart from being cheaper if they thought it would increase battery life or if it would keep the laptop cooler

no problem reported by bios. the dGpu is missing in the bios too. by the way the notebook stopped charging the battery two weeks ago, I thought the problem is with the battery and I purchase a new one. the battery delivered half an hour ago and its not charging again. I think there's something wrong with the mainboard. I use premamod bios, it is void the warranty, yes???

My w230ss should be arriving today... took forever, damn. Got the indium foil all lined up and ready, the 2tb drive prepared, the 3g card on hand. I'm literally drooling at this manifestation of my envisioned perfect machine - small, lightweight with good battery life, powerful enough to go full 1080p high/ultra settings, visually pleasing both in form and screen, well cooled (relatively speaking), which can serve as an always-connected machine, and still has space for a ssd + hdd combo. And then there's the OC potential, Prema's wonderful support giving high usability for enthusiasts, oh man, courier, why aren't you calling me already...

money certainly is an issue, but I am trying to build a system which has minimum specs comparable to my studio desktop (thats a Q6600 with 8MB cache), I want as much L2 as possible for audio processing, all the other specs are way above my studio setup, it would be a shame to loose some resources for the sake of a 2MB cache difference

hmm something to think about i guess

but my main question about the screen, FHD or QHD+, still cant decide or find out which is actually better....has anyone used both? can the QHD be powered by the HD4600 to run windows with a Direct Draw program interface (while running each core @ 20% fairly constantly), without having to switch on the GPU and make loads of noise? is the same true of the FHD?

As far as I can tell, the 1440p/1800p screens aren't available until August, across any reseller that didn't already have some stock left (and i don't think there are any).

That model should work. I managed to score a cheap OEM delta unit from Ebay and it works perfectly. As long as the voltage and amperage match up, and the connector fits, it should be fine.

I am a cheapskate though, and these Asus power supplies were reported as having the same size connector as our 230SS computers, and another user reported that he was using an Asus 180w unit with zero ill effects (except ample stable power :D )

Got mine from Eurocom notebooks (Canada) who shipped from New York FedEx to California less than a week in hand from purchase. It was $1088 plus I think $49 shipping No OS and with a 500gb Seagate hybrid HD that I swapped out for a 240gb SSD.

    Clevo W230SS 13 3" QHD Retina GTX 860M 2GB DDR5 i7 4700MQ 8GB 500GB HDD WiFi BT | eBay

The 3200x1800 QHD screen is gorgeous even though NVIDIA GeForce Experience optimizes Diablo 3 at 2160 instead of 3200 but nonetheless stunning. I actually prefer the glossy screen as I do on my iPads.

    2 caveats about this laptop:
    1) You must prepare a uefi usb windows 8 install usb if you want to do a uefi install (otherwise a dvd will default to old bios install)
    2) NVIDIA or Blizzard doesn't seem to have their drivers right yet for the 860m on windows 8.1 - it will give a black screen on Diablo 3 unless because it defaults to monitor display 0 instead of 1. You can Google a workaround for this.

BTW does anyone have a link where to buy the clear plastic back cover to see the insides? Please PM me if you do :hi2:

A number of sellers have had 3200x1800 displays available at various times, but has anybody seen the 2560x1440 screen in the wild? The only place I've seen 1440p/WQHD even advertised is the French clevo site clevo.fr, and it still lists as "pre-order" with no release date. It could be that this model has not yet been manufactured or reviewed.

I'm wondering whether it will be a glossy or matte display, and whether it's worth waiting for or not. I plan to do a lot of code development while on the road, and having more screen real estate and better text sharpness would be great.

Perhaps replacing the 1080p display down the road with an after-market part would be an option, but not sure what that would entail.

Hi guys, first post. I've had the w230ss for a bit now and I'm loving it, but I have a problem with the screen. Ever since I got it, it seems like as if there's a "smudge" inside the screen. Is there anywhere that I can buy a new screen for the w230ss? Thanks :)

Thanks, I've tried it before but haven't thought of it after I tried it the first time (and then reinstalled new drivers which was a while ago) so I'll do just that and report back.
Heard the same sound which usually indicates that the keyboard and mouse will stop working and sometimes the computer stalls as well after that sound but now nothing happened.
I'll try and report back regardless.

It's just a generic card, nothing special about and generally advised to upgrade no matter what. For the small upgrade price you get much better performance.

Warranty is always available no matter where you are. Shipping coverage covers the shipping cost where otherwise it would not be.

LOL :D the 4700mq will blow away your Q6600 :p. My desktop was a Q6600 until Jan of this year, finally upgraded to an FX-8350... and the 4810mq is probably faster than my 8350 lol. You're moving up almost 8 years in terms of technology. Can't just look at clock speeds/cache size/etc. IPC has skyrocketed, a modern Haswell i7 at 3 GHz will shatter a c2q at 3 GHz. Even if the modern Haswell is mobile with 1/3rd the power usage lol.

My stock WiFi card has been rock solid - no disconnects or other annoyances with it. It is only a 2x2 card, and maxes out at about 8mb/s doing local transfers. Latency is great so I honestly have no reason to upgrade unless I am going to an Intel 6300 3x3 card (I have a 3x3 router as well for 450 mbps throughput).

I have never done a LAN file transfer using one of the 7260's on a wireless N access point, but I doubt they would be much better. If you have an AC access point, than obviously the 7260 will yeild far better performance.

I can obviously only speak for my personal experiences though.

Your experience isn't the typical experience I hear of. I personally recommend the upgrade every time I talk with someone. Those who opt to stick with the default I pretty much plan on getting called when the machine arrives and setting them up with an RMA upgrade to a different card.

I've had the Q6600 since they first came out, its still a beast of a machine for what I do and i'm amazed its still goin, i dont plan on ditching it any time soon lol

i've not tried any i7's at all (got an i5 laptop aswell), good to hear there has been such an improvement, I expected it would be mainly power management advances rather than significant performance boosts - very good to hear

stiiillll looking for answer on the 1800 vs 1080 question tho lol  i'm leaning towards the 1800, but not if its going to make the machine significantly hotter/noisier

Hotter/noisier? No... but the color is pretty bad (particularly yellows look horrible), it's rgbw pentile and therefore not really 1800p (just abuses pentile to artificially inflate the stated DPI), and it will make your life harder with applications that do not properly support DPI scaling. Not worth it.

The 1440p panel might be worth it if you can find somewhere that sells it. IMHO, the 1800p is never worth it.

but you should be able to run games @ native looking 1600:900. Get a decent fps boost compared to fullhd gaming and with a fixed fps limitter i would expect less heat. Nevertheless the panel can run 1080p too....

I respect all the comments about the bad 1800 panel so i had a look at the Lenovo Yoga 2 pro at a local store here in Germany for myself. It uses the same Samsung panel like our Clevo does. Its less glossy than expected. For me it looked really good. Its a very bright panel even in the direct neon light in the store. (Maybe because of white pixels??). In my opinion its not as bad as people are talking it. 1080p also looked pretty fine.

I am not colour blind but did not see problems with colors. Does this problem exist permanently or only when on battery without PSU (LCD power saving)? The yoga was connected to the PSU all the time.

The native looking 1600:900 is the only good part about the panel. Yellows look pretty bad on it. Even after calibration. It was a huge problem for both of the major laptops that used the panel, the Ativ Book 9 and the Y2P. The Y2P was exceptionally horrible at launch, they eventually released an update that calibrated a bit better, but drew more power. On battery, yellows still look pretty bad.

The bad color reproduction, the awful software support for XHDPI displays, the lower battery life both from the panel itself and the GPU(s) powering them, the fact that it isn't actually 1800p, the extra cost, the awful software support for XHDPI (mentioning it again because it's a huge problem)... I would not get it even if it were free lol.

Okay, thanks for your opinion. For myself colors did not look that bad - i don't edit photos. Scaling will be fixed in the future - i'm pretty sure Software devs will work on it. I don't have a lot of special Software that would have scaling problems. Mostly surfing and games. So it fits my needs. Got a very good deal so i paid only 24€ more that are 32,5$ and for me its worth it. I come from 17" fullHD (p170em) so maybe that is why i like 1600x900 for 13,3" gaming that much.

Hi guys. I gave up the 2014 Razer Blade's svelte looks, GTX 870M and 1800p screen for this beast - HTWingNut, you might remember me from that forum. My main reason for foregoing the Blade was that the Blade was forbiddingly expensive (SGD$3000), and I'm still the equivalent of a high-school student, restricted by parents. (I'm 17). Anyway I've ordered it from the Singapore reseller, they call themselves Aftershock, for SGD$2183. You guys can do the maths. Here're my specs:

    Intel Core i7-4710MQ
    8GB DDR3 1600 MHz RAM
    GTX 860M with 2GB GDDR5 VRAM (duh)
    2x 120GB Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSDs
    1TB Hitachi 7200RPM HDD
    1080p screen (didn't choose the 1800p screen - can't hackintosh)

So, I'll be joining you pretty soon (it's getting delivered in a month or so). Meanwhile, do you guys have any tips to improve performance and battery life? I plan to install Prema's BIOS mod, for OS X. Anything besides that? Thanks guys.

hmm well personally, apart from Adobe (which I know are still working on their retina/HDPI scaling issues), all the other programs I need to use scale perfectly upto 4K

the color issue is a concern tho, when you say that Yellow looks bad, what exactly do you mean? having spent most of my life doing graphic design and CGI, I have yet to come across any monitors that can truely represent colors in the way that I would want, its just something I've learnt to live with and adapt my techniques to...but, if yellow looks green or red, for eg, then thats definitly going to far in the wrong direction lol

regarding other HDPI windows compatibility, i know also that Microsoft are working on this issue, but that most of the ''proper'' windows 8 apps (using the new interface) work great at any DPI, the issue seem to mainly arise with programs which are based on the old window design? this is only what I have read however, my only direct experience with 3K and 4K screens is with Mac (never an experience i enjoy very much lol)

As long as you're happy with it :).

This isn't even an extreme example of it. I've definitely seen worse cases on YouTube. Might not be as bad on the Clevo, might be worse. Their color calibration might only work on Windows and not Linux. etc.

So my machine arrived :) I'm really loving it so far in terms of design, aesthetics and performance, but i'm having some trouble with the drivers, methinks. I'd read prema's description of some power management settings at one point, he mentioned he used entertainment mode for the most optimal fan behavior, but i have no such option.

I've been trying to install my old Ericsson f3507g 3G card, and the same drivers that used to work on my old lenovo don't work on this machine. It's detected and named in the device manager, but fails to recognize any drivers.

Heatspring started out a little hot yesterday, but temps dropped 10C over the night, so today I'll be looking into a bit of XTU and nvidia inspector play.

I'd saved up about 5 webpages worth of tweaks and fixes for the machine and now i forgot them all. Sigh.

There was at one point a posted install order for the drivers + some tweaks for various issues with the w230ss. Can anyone point me a link if they ran into something like that? I haven't managed to find it anymore.

Hard to tell with no control panel to use as a reference, but that does look depressingly dark/bland to be yellow. Seems very similar to the Y2P pre-calibration update.

is that running from the HD4600 or the 860M? is there any difference between the two?

Maybe this is interesting regarding scaling on QHD+ screen:
(Both are 3200x1800 pixel first shot is @100%, second @200% scaling in Win8.1):

How is the battery life with the QHD+? (for anyone who has it) The standard battery with the FHD is around 5.5hrs so I'm wondering if anyone with the QHD+ has tested the battery life on it, thanks :)

I have added an estimated Battery score by PC Mark 8, don't have one for FHD panel for comparison.
Maybe someone with FHD and a similar configuration can make one...

Well, I finally rebooted and it appears that CpxAzn's solution for killing the right swipe charms in Windows is the one that actually works! Thanks so much for that. Original Post: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...er-np7338-owner-s-lounge-101.html#post9673875

I was also able to fix another issue that cropped up, when playing my first game on this PC (Bioshock 1).

Windows 8.1 Update 1 was triggering Low Memory Warning, and kicking me back to desktop and crashing the game, even though I had plenty of free memory. After hunting around the interwebs, I found a solution on this thread, by disabling the warning via Group Policy: Crysis on Windows 8.1 triggers low-memory warning - Super User

Please keep us updated with your experience installing OS X and maybe even a step by step guide would be nice. I came from a macbook, and while I can't think of a reason I would need to dual boot at the moment, I might in the future, if I know that it works. Here is the latest guide I can find, specifically for OSX Mavericks: How to install OS X Mavericks on your PC with Niresh

Lastly, I cannot get more than 4 hours of battery life with my machine no matter what I do, at the moment I have it set to "Power Saver" and BatteryBar says (and I have run it down to confirm) that my maximum runtime is exactly 4 hours. I don't know what else I can do to get to 5-5.5 hours without playing with clock speeds.

Yay, the heatspring kicked in. Now a full session of SC2 maxed out extreme everything in a game with over 400 units onscreen maxes out my CPU temp at 85C (4700mq OC'd to 3.6GHz) and the 860m maxes out at 69C (1100core/5000ram). Now I just need to make that power profile work. Maybe uninstalling/reinstalling the hotkey will fix this.

Decided to make a .reg file for this fix - it works for me as well. See attachment.

I'm using Synaptics driver version 18.0.5

Windows only displays battery percentage, you should download BatteryBar to give estimates on battery life.

In Germany MYSN started a promotion:
    https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?...154.1073741828.187233354796358&type=1&theater

You get Watchdogs for free if you buy a custom build P304 = W230SS machine.

Refering Notebookcheck it will run on medium Details and 1366x768:

for 1080p you should disable MSAA to get the needed FPS boost.

I'll test with 1600:900 after i have recieved my W230SS with 3K panel....

    Did you hit Fn+F10?

I've played it on high no AA at 1080p and it runs 35-40FPS just fine.

Does anyone know if Metabox has an online rep here on the forum?

More specifically, I've just got my hands on a W230SS and am interested in flashing Prema's BIOS (like I did with the W110er), however, I'm not entirely sure if Metabox is cool with that for warranty purposes (thank god nothing happened with the W110er).

Yeah, definitely. However, I'm not using that guide, and I already have a hackintosh (Samsung RF411-S03SG), and that has a Sandy Bridge CPU. I don't want to use distros, and Niresh is a distro (i.e pirated copy of OS X). I'll definitely keep you updated, and yes, I do intend to get out a guide once I've installed OS X well and stable. I'll be installing Mavericks first, not Yosemite. My main reason for dual-booting is that I need Xcode for iOS development.

I am using Mavericks on my Desktop PC with no troubles (680 SLI, 16GB ram,SSD..), but I can't manage to reach the apple logo boot screen with any way (MyHack, Niresh, Unibeast...).
Are there any setting I should disable in the bios other then disabling intel virtual?
    I appreciate any help.
P.S: I am using the default Mythlogic bios that came with it (not wanting to change bios as I prefer to keep the boot logo).
