No cooler required IMHO. Just prop up the back a bit is all you really need. Crucial M500 is perfectly fine. For most users write speed isn't as important as read speed because you won't be doing a lot of large writes typically nearly as much as reads.

hey guys, when connected to an external monitor (not using the 13incher), which screen closed position is better for thermals, flat down as per normal use or vertically up along the back edge of the laptop(where battery is)?

simple physics seems to indicate that the 'standing' position is better due to increased surface area in contact with the atmosphere thus better airflow, but im worried if gravity might affect any internals.

reference for the vertical standing position:

One user on here had problems with cpu throttling with the laptop vertical. I don't believe the heat pipes for the cooler were designed for vertical use.

The heatpipes have actual liquid in them that will vaporize when hot which causes better heat dissipation contacting the copper, then when that heat is lost will cool and pick up more heat to dissipate (very simple way of putting it) So when vertical that liquid pools up and doesn't work as efficiently.

I think I'll be buying W230SS as well. Got tired of waiting for Y50, plus all things point to the fact that it's going to be more expensive than W230SS in Denmark. Most certianly I'll be buying w230 next week, already bought a 24" display for it. :D

Can I use regular DDR3 so-dimm memory in W230SS? The one I am going to buy comes with DDR3L, low voltage.

Interesting issue... I can't even change the shutdown options o.o

Update: Tried your suggestion. It worked! Still cannot see headphone option in Control Panel -> Sound, but there's sound coming through on my headphones now. Thanks!

I was the user Lzealot was referring to. I did some testing after I had problems with the CPU going into some hard core throttling.

The results I came up with was if the laptop base was flat in a conventional orientation and with the underside being raised off the table 1" to 1 1/2" or so for good, unrestricted airflow to the vents the cooling worked very well.

Rotating it 90 degrees where the back of the screen is now the bottom and the underside of the laptop is vertical such as the letter 'L' and the screen is the bottom part, cooling worked very well also....in my tests it seemed to run a tad cooler this way than when being using it in the above described conventional way.

The big flop was when I tried with the underside vertical again but the screen on top leaning up against something to balance it. Basically in a position like the number '7' with the screen as the top part. Anyway....cooling completely halts and thermals go though the roof within about 45-60 seconds after being placed in this position. That's when my CPU was throttling all the way down to 800 mhz and still running at 98-100c. Not the optimum cooling solution by a long shot.

The only way I didn't try was with the laptop lid closed and it running upside down. For that orientation, I can not comment on whether it works or not.

    Hope this helps.

Quad told me how Amazing this little notebook was and got me in to the laptop world again just one day of testing and I can already tell this thing is truly amazing
would be nice to try and overclock the 860m to get extra free performance even if it already plays anything I trow at it.

That is exactly what I had found out in my little test. Before I had this issue I had no clue about the sensitivity of heatpipe angles. After reading up on it, I understand how they work much better now.

Yes most DDR3L RAM should be OK. No one can say for certain every single brand/model will work or be compatible with what ever your machine ships with but for the most part you should be fine with standard 1600mhz DDR3L memory.

After playing with the machine for a couple of hours I can report that it stays nice and cool under normal circumstances I've played a couple of lower end games and the fan hadn't come up. The sound, while nothing to write home about, isn't nearly as bad as I was lead to believe. 1080p on that small a screen is crisp the track pad is pretty meh but thank whomever decided that separate buttons were sourced. I've grown to hate trackpads with integrated buttons (thanks apple and the followers). The system looks nice with no badging. I'll try to put it through the paces soon.

I'm pretty sure I have a couple 4gb sticks of standard 1.5 volt DDR3 in an older laptop I have. I will double check later tonight to see if it is and I will get back you. If it is DDR3 instead of DDR3L, I will stick it in my w230ss to make sure it works. I'd guess it probably would work but I will see what I can find out.

Quadzilla, I think CyberTronics was asking if standard 1.5 volt DDR3 would work in place of the factory equipped 1.35 volt DDR3L.

It does work with DDR3 and 1.5V.

I just plopped in a Kingston DDR3 1.5V 2x4GB 2133MHz kit, and with Prema's BIOS was able to run easily at 2133MHz CAS 11.

edit: It seems I just got "lucky". Apparently mobile Haswell isn't supposed to run 1.5V RAM, and the RAM is likely actually running at 1.35V.

    mathematica1.png

Once this comes in I'm going to try to install arch linux on this with KVM VGA passthrough to a windows VM. I will report back.

I know this card doesn't support passthrough, but this guy seems to have made it work.

If that fails I'll ditch the passthrough, but it would be so fun...

Interesting I could not get any previous haswell machines to work with 1.5v Ram

Everyone switched over to 1.35v and when I tried myself I had no luck either and read many posts saying the same, at least on the Alienware machines.

Edit: Yeah I guess you did get lucky with that set of ram because I was almost certain at the original time of this post that haswell did not support 1.5v RAM

I guess some may work and some won't so they say no support. I certainly would not buy any 1.5 hoping it works.

    HTWingNut,
When you have the higher speed ram installed does it grant any performance gains to the Integrated Intel Video? Just curious. Before things like Opitmus, I know on the earlier versions of the Intel Video that higher speed ram helped the bandwidth greatly.
    _YS

Edit: I see in HTWingNut's picture that the Intel GPU is using the higher speed ram. So it will use the speed. How much it helps is questionable. Thanks.

It will help with IGP, no question about it. Also, those screenshots are with Prema's BIOS. Otherwise stock BIOS will only offer 1866MHz max if your RAM is configured for 1866MHz.

Anyone having issues with headphone output?
It seems to only output 5.1 so I don't hear the vocals in songs at all when using headphones.
I found that adjusting Room Correction in VIA HD panel can get the vocals back, but it still sounds funky.

Just starting using my Eurocom M4 in earnest after installing a sandisk extreme II 480gb SSD and an intel 7260AC yesterday. Everything is really fast, quiet, and smooth. Mechanically everything is great - nice keyboard, good size, weight, etc., and the internal layout is intuitive and easy to navigate. Installing new components was really simple - probably the easiest upgrades I've ever made to a computer (including desktops) despite the small size. Makes a great contrast to the Lenovo y500 sitting next to it, for which I've just discovered I can't upgrade the wireless card.

The QHD screen is still giving me some trouble, and the scaling is really hit or miss. I've adjusted most of the native stuff and chrome to sizes I'm reasonably happy with, mostly by tweaking global fonts and chrome's scale. Tried a bunch of different options (disabling high dpi for chrome, using the global win8 scale, adjusting setting app by app etc), but still haven't come up to a perfect answer. Making one app work well usually means that a menu or title bar somewhere else is too big/small. Some apps are just comically tiny. The Origin example in the notebookcheck review wasn't an exaggeration.

Haven't tried much gaming yet as I try to get the basics in order, but I'll report back when I do.

I can't imagine using hard drives in a laptop anymore. I had an AW 14 last October with 1TB 7200rpm and it was a very painful experience compared to the SSD. Both in performance and noise aspects.

Does anyone know a way to get XTU to load on startup, without it asking for User Account Control authorization, in Windows 7? I keep forgetting to turn it on before I jump into BF4 lol. I tried adding the shortcut to startup folder, but it prompts for UAC authorization every time I boot (annoying but I don't want to turn off UAC).

Google has some ideas about stopping UAC on certain programs, but they involve 3rd part programs I'd rather stay away from.

So, I've had my machine now a couple months and love most everything about it.

One issue I am having that I can't seem to figure out. When cold booting it seems to hang at the BIOS startup screen for a long time. I haven't used a stopwatch yet, but I'd say maybe a minute. It then seems to flash and reappear and then it boots into Windows 8.1. I have tried changing a few of the BIOS settings but I don't really see anything like a memory test running.

Once it gets to the Windows booting screen, it's like normally less than 10-12 seconds into Windows.

I have an SSD (Sata) drive and 16 GB of ram.

Any thought from the big brains on this forum?

I have some outstanding issues if someone can help me resolve it would be great:

    1) I read somewhere that one of the USB ports is powered, so it can charge a device while the laptop is off. Anyone can confirm, and which one is it?

    2) I have installed all the drivers I require, but I still have one device in device manager which is not installed correctly. It is just called "Unknown Device". According to a thread I found: Unknown device with location "on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant - Microsoft Community

It might be Intel Smart Connect Technology which is the missing driver, however that software did not detect the component in my laptop. The Intel rapid start and rapid storage drivers from the Clevo website are also not the right ones.

    3) My keyboard backlight does not seem to be working around the spacebar. Does anyone else have this issue? If I put my nose against the right cursor button I can see the backlight it there, it is just not "pushing up" around the edges.

It's the front most USB 3.0 port on the right side of the laptop. If you look real close, there is a lighting bolt icon below the USB icon.

On mine all three USB 3.0 ports on the right side and the USB 2.0 on the left side stay active when the lid is closed and the laptop is in 'sleep' mode. But if I shut it down completely all three USB 3.0 ports and the USB 2.0 on the other side all shut down....including the one with the lightning bolt. I don't have a hibernate option in Windows 8.1 so I was unable to try that.
But one good thing to know...the front most USB 3.0 port, the one with the lightning bolt will charge at up to 1.5 amps. The other two 3.0 ports and the 2.0 on the other side only charge at 0.5 amps. So if you're plugging in a tablet or something that accepts a high amp charge, make sure you're plugged into the front right USB 3.0 port for maximum charging speed.

Did you try installing just one SSD in the mSATA slot up front that's not being recognized and leave the other out of the laptop to see if the first one would show up. If it doesn't show up, try again with the other SSD in the same front slot and leave the first SSD out of the laptop this time. If it works, try adding the second mSATA SSD in the back slot and see if it will recognize both of them now. If it doesn't, I'm out of ideas. Hopefully some nice person with more knowledge of the above described situation will chime in and correct any bad advise I may have mistakenly given.
    Best of luck Nachy024!

Exactly as lost said. Start with only 1 and see what happens.

FYI - my MSata SSD in in the slot you say doesn't work for you.
