Thanks for the plot. Which graphics setting looked better to you – the 1080p Ultra, or 3K Medium?

Lol. Repasting is pretty easy. I recommend arctic silver 5 for noobs. Gelid extreme or noctua for the more experienced, or even shin etsu if you can find it. I have not and will not try cool laboratories liquid metal because it is expert level paste and also comes with some downsides, especially for the uninitiated. AS5 is so easy to apply. Gelid and the others I mentioned need a little more TLC to apply but not hard once it gets more malleable. Also, AS5 is easy to find. The others will only net you a few more degrees minus. CLP a little more but not worth time, risk and money to me.

AS-5 is junk and will be insufficient to cool the 4790K.. I'd suggest IC Diamond/ Gelid GC Extreme.. it's not too difficult to apply them tbh.. Just put your IC Diamond tube in a cup of warm water for a few mins and it becomes more liquidy and easier to apply...

I don't think it's junk, but it probably is a bottom of barrel choice for the 4790k. I still stand by my recommendation for noobs and also ease to find.

I will! I have class from 5pm - 1am today (currently in class) and have quite a bit I need to do to the laptop :p

I'd like to think I'm pretty good at repasting things, I repasted quite a few desktops and fixed many RROD's on xbox 360's (most required repaste of gpu)

Decided to upgrade to 980m today about 2 hours after I hit phase 2. Felt like I needed to get a high end laptop, and the 970m was an itch that needed to be scratched. And I don't even game. I like running simulations and analytics. Mostly boinc stuff. Hope I don't regret. Got crazy overtime the last 3 weeks and said what the hell is $300 over 3-5 years. I hope batman impresses me. Batman Jr. didn't feel like enough of an upgrade.

Couldn't agree with you more, Pukemon...if you're going to do it, do it right!

I'm still holding off...still taking in all of the comments/customer reviews/benchmarks...still waiting for better screen choices...still attempting to ensure that this machine is sound before I pull the trigger...and still looking to determine the best vendor/warranty.

I really only need a barebone system, but I want a quality 3 year warranty. So, for instance, RJTECH would be an option (if Clevo starts shipping better screens...I REALLY don't want to have to obtain my own and swap it), BUT...what is this "New Leaf" warranty? Sure, I performed some intel...and what I found was inconclusive.

Also, seems you can buy this machine on Amazon, as reported by a forum member...but the extended warranty is through Warrantech...which makes no sense to me. Why wouldn't the actual seller offer an extended warranty through the company itself? How good is a Warrantech warranty?

I know one line of thought is: don't buy a barebone - buy through a "reputable" vendor and get their/Sager's warranty...and sell the components you don't need.

Nah...too much of a hassle IMHO. My line of thought is...why buy something I don't need? "Hold the pickle/hold the lettuce/special orders don't upset us"..."Have it your way!" :)

    Ah, the good old days....................................

Hold the onions for me... :D

You could always ask Mythlogic to assemble with your parts, they will. Their warranty on the rest of the machine. They have one other screen option at this time for the 17".

Uncanny, Bullrun...I've been leaning toward Mythlogic...even contacted them yesterday. These forums appear to have nothing but good things to say about them.
The rep stated that they could install my components for me, just to be sure that everything tested OK. I'd rather install them myself...to me, it's part of the joy of getting a new laptop.
I was also told that the other screen option will be either an AUO or an LG, depending upon what gets sent to them, but that they won't be available until the end of February. I don't want the LG, so I'll see what they get at the end of the month. By that time, I'll have more info regarding any reported issues with this machine.

Warranty offers are based off a calculated risk, some people choose to offset this by using a third party company who specialises in that sort of thing. This would not be surprising for an amazon seller if they don't have much systems expertise.

This from their warranty is encouraging after reading other experiences here.
    " C. UPGRADES.
MYTHLOGIC Computers gives the customer the freedom to upgrade his or her computer system without voiding their overall warranty."

I'm holding off a little as well for basically the same reasons. If I chose them, I would, definitely, send my SEII SSD to them, no need for another HDD in an external.

    Update time!
I feel bad for my P151SM1 because after I switch everything over I don't think I'm ever going back.

    ---------------------System-------------------------

    Model: P9772
    CPU: 4790 (non k)
    GPU: 970m
    TIM: Stock.........yeh thats right
Ram: 8GB (Plan to switch to 16GB)
HDD: 1TB HDD (Plan to add 250GB SSD)
    PSU: 230W

    --------------------Design----------------------------

    Sexiest laptop I've ever seen
    Build quality is excellent
    Feels super nice
Keyboard is great (Have to get used to the short shift key on the right side though)
Touchpad is actually a lot better than I was expecting
The screen is probably the best/clearest TN screen I've ever seen, though screens are usually a personal opinion.
Speakers are actually reallly good, glad to see onkyo has made tremendous improvements since my P151SM1

    ------------------Temperatures----------------------

    Power Settings: High Performance
    ControlCenter Setting: Performance
    ControlCenter Power Conservation: Performance

All tests include the use of:
    -HWMonitor
    -Core Temp

    Idle:
    -Min: 44C
    -Max: 54C
Stays around 47-50C with light use

    wPrime
    -1024M Integer Test
    Temps:
    -Average: 80C
    -Max: 82C

    BurnInTest
-100% CPU test (disabled everything else)
    Temps:
-Min: 49.0C (started at idle :p)
-Current: 73.5C (It shot to 49C seconds after the test finished)
    -Max: 79.3C

Fans have never hit max speed.. well besides me turning them to max speed to hear them..
Idling is virtually silent, I hear the HDD over the fans which is insane to me..

    -----------------------Other-------------------------

Let me know if theres anything you guys want me to do/try.

    STAY TUNED FOR MORE

I was expecting wayyy higher temps.. like high 80's-mid 90's AT LEAST, with stock paste at 100% CPU

Games should run much cooler, correct?
I plan to do some game testing, but I have a lot to do on this beast and don't plan on doing any of it tonight since I had class from 5pm-1am lol

also, what else would you recommend I run for these guys? :p

Edit: I only have one issue so far
-Youtube won't show me any options above 720P on ANY video.. which is weird..
-Resolution is at 1920x1080 so no issue there

hm no idea@youtube, check your browser settings? try different browser? update flash version? try HTML5 video versions?

games will definitely run much cooler, tools like wprime, prime95, xtu, intel burn, furmark and msi kombustor just give u an idea of the worst-case scenario :)

Thanks! I updated Flash and now it works haha.

Edit: After updating flash I noticed a single dead pixel.. well hoping its stuck, going to run one of those crazy flashy color things, hopefully that will fix it
Edit2: Ran it for about 10 mins, its still black.. so I'm going to run it for 30 mins, if that doesn't work I will turn off the laptop for the night, if that doesn't work.. well at least its only 1

Lol no its a program that cycles through colors super fast to try and fix the pixel lol

Edit: Yeah that pixel isn't coming back haha

Edit 2: Does anyone know if these drivers will work with windows 7? http://www.clevo.com/en/e-services/download/ftpOut.asp?Lmodel=P770ZM&ltype=9&submit=+GO+

If not where can I find them?

NICE! very tempting. you are correct the game does not support AA natively it ops for resolution scaling as you mentioned. still possible the 3.0 GHz cap on the CPU could of been limiting some frames. the CPU looks hella stressed. this sorta makes me wonder if the GPU was a little on the thirsty side for data from the CPU at higher texture rates of very high and Ultra.
Thanks again for putting in the work to benchmark that and sharing the info very useful for people worried about the 980m's performance beyond 1080p without AA.

    Man, I REALLY hope for a 3k, 1600p , or at least a 1440p option with the 17 inch

Well keep hoping for those screens on the 17" model.. IPS screens are just hitting the 17.3" space.. 3K/4K screens seem to be a long way off.. I'd personally love a 3K screen on my new 17" laptop but it's just not going to happen.. Supposedly the 17" market isn't big enough for the display makers to make 3K/4K screens which is BS...

It is a sudden spike up in temp, but once in the 90s, the thermal throttling in prime seemed somewhat gradual by comparison.

Meanwhile, finally got my dual boot setup. I won't be on here near as often until Feb. 27. Then I'm going to have some fun working on the cooling!

I honestly had a hard time telling them all apart, even 3K at higher settings lol. If there were some bluriness at 1080p for playing in non-native I didn´t notice it. I´d probably pick 1080p because the lighting on 3K medium wasn´t as good.
In Planetside 2 going from 3K to 1080p was more noticeable but that was probably because the UI got so much bigger, the picture was still crisp.

The fps-graph was with stock CPU and GPU. Only the video had the CPU capped and the GPU oc:d which produced the best experience in Shadow of Mordor for me.

Actually the cpu throttled most in 1080p and 3K medium, probably having a hard time with the higher frame rates.

I´ll link my original post before I go totally off topic: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/gigabyte-p35x-v3-owners-lounge.764645/page-70#post-9840545

I figure with Haswell-e and 980m 3k is playable ... then when I upgrade to broadwell (lower TDP) and 1080m or 1180m (w/e its going to be called) FPS will only get better in the 3k space

If you got it with OS installed it should already be taken care of for you. If doing the install yourself use the drivers disk that came with and install the drivers included there.

Geesh...that stuck pixel would drive me nuts! And to think...you were soooooo close to not even opening that box! And...since the Amazon seller actually has it's own sales website, my suspicious nature (yep...I not only admit to it, I EMBRACE it!) makes me wonder if the "dead pixel" machines (or others that might be problematic) get dumped-off to Amazon and Warrantech....!??

Or maybe they bank on a healthy percentage of buyers choosing to just "live with it"?

But then again...you did say something about contacting the seller before you opened the box and that they stated they would honor some sort of warranty...so maybe you're covered?

Would be interesting to find out.....

I mean other than the one dead pixel this machine is amazing, and sometimes **** happens, thats why I'm not too worried about the dead pixel. I believe all warranties cover dead pixels (up to a certain amount of time) if you accrue enough of them.

Still looking for win7 drivers or to see if the 8.1 drivers on here will work

    Hello

mysn's XMG U705 has new Win 7 and 8.1 drivers, in addition to updated BIOS
I do not know if they are valid on a Sager/Clevo, I believe they are the same hardware, could be customized BIOS/boot menus ???

Aw it's cool. Overdue for a new laptop by a year going by my 3 year cycle. What's a few more grueling days. But only have ~3 days left to test RAM I ordered a little too early.

Found the drivers for windows 7 here

Use the Windows 8 version of HotKey (or else you lose like half your FN buttons and cant change your keyboard lighting)

When I clock down to that (3.8 4 cores), after having swapped stock TIM for MX-4, with power settings to balanced, I get the same idle and max temps (Idle is 47-54; 50-51 avg; max temps in BIT is 78.5 and most common 76.5 for the peak high); Intel is down at 78 max

For those talking about 3K and 4K screens... keep in mind its only a 17" and its not going to give that much more sharpness but your framerates on the other hand will go down much more... just my 2 cnts.
