Oh I see. That makes sense. Basically theyre happening every 1-2 minutes. This is where the ping test going straight to the router goes up to around 50-100ms, instead of the normal 3ms. But once again its pretty inconsistent. Most of the time it stays solid, otherwise it slightly fluctuates from 3-30 range every second or so. But then you'll see the high ping spike go even higher than these or maybe even a 'Request timed out' message.

I just find this annoying as I mainly play online games, such as LoL, or Battlefield. I haven't actually tested these games, but I might try and download them and see what kind of ping I get. Although my LoL account is in the Oceania server, so high ping is going to be unavoidable playing that game.

I would like to try it elsewhere using a different wireless connection but my holiday plans may or may not allow it. I'll definitely try do my best to get out and try another. If I get a chance, I will.

    Cheers.

If you are still facing problems with your Intel 7265, try driver 17.13.11 from 29.12.2014,
that fixes every of my problems so far...

Hi guys, I was wondering how the NP8652 compares to the AW15. I'm interested in the 4k with the nvidia 980 card. The sager is a little bit cheaper but leaving the price aside, which laptop would you recommend. Thanks.

You're asking in the Sager/Clevo forum. What sort of answer do you expect? I find the thinness and overall lack of bling-bling on the Sager/Clevo to be real strong points of this laptop. Also cheapness can't be overrated. And the graphics dock is a little silly when you have to spend <$800USD to get a maybe 30% graphics improvement over the 980M.

In terms of specs, the AW15 has:
    • Lighting effects
    • A touch-capable 4k IPS panel (presumably Samsung; no idea which model really)
    • One more USB port (three unpowered 3.0, one powered)
    • A much larger battery (92Wh versus 60Wh)

    and the P650SG has:
    • A marginally more powerful CPU (2.6–3.6GHz instead of 2.5–3.5GHz)
    • Options for 4k IGZO and 4k IPS panels; touch is not supported by the resellers I've used
    • Two more Mini Display ports
    • More RAM slots (4 instead of 2; allows for ready upgrades to 32GB if needed)
    • Two m.2 slots instead of 1 (allows for RAID configurations and more storage overall)
    • Two HDD slots instead of 1

Both machines are built solidly (the AW15 should be, considering AlienWare's reputation), with the AW15 being significantly heavier (7.07lb/3.2kg versus 5.6lb/2.5kg). I personally like the look of the AW15 better, but in your position would choose the P650SG because:

    • I wanted a lighter machine to lug around school
    • I know thermal management in the P650SG is excellent; the AW15's thermals are unknown
    • I can buy an extended warranty (2 years instead of 1) from Mythlogic and it works out cheaper than an AW15 with the standard warranty
    • I could choose a reseller with excellent service (Mythlogic), instead of making do with Dell, whose quality of service is more variable

Having said that, your needs and aesthetic preferences may vary. I placed an order for a P650SG a few days ago, and seeing the AW15's larger battery nearly made me regret my decision—but I've owned Dell machines before, and I'd rather deal with a small company that answers my emails in seconds any day. The difference in service quality was ultimately the most meaningful one for me.

    Both of these already exist?
P32S-P32F (M.2 to USB3.0 Extender Board) Indeed powered with a sata power cable
    P34SF-USB (USB to mPCI-e Extender)

They sell mutch more usefull tools like that, for example
    http://www.hwtools.net/ExtenderBoard/P15S-P15F.html M.2 to mPCI-e
    http://www.hwtools.net/ExtenderBoard/P4SM2.html M.2 to PCI-e 4x

Especially the last one is interesting for us, as we have one of maybe 5 laptop types that have a 4x speed M.2 slot, you can make a external gpu setup with that adapter and a x4 to 16x adapter. For now who is going to need a faster GPU then a GTX98/70m? But maybe in the future it could be interesting. Its less then 5% loss over 16gbps vs normal 16x slot in a desktop

hmm, maybe a sli config with a mxm gtx98/70m is possible? No idea how SLI Bridges work in the mobile GPU's. I know AMD does it over pci these days and doesn't need a bridge anymore.

    Food for thought

Thanks for the detailed comparison, I went with the NP8652 because of the weight and also dont want the "flashy" looks.

Actually had this idea in my head for 2 days and was googleing my of to find a reason this wouln't work. You see it mentioned in a few questions but that is with the M.2 Type b slots that only support sata.
And was really doubting my own mind thinking someone must have thought of that before, i must be missing something obvious...

Now to find the ultimate target laptop, something like the MSI gs30 but then with a spare M.2 type M slot and much cheaper :p

tfw HIDevolution doesn't bother to reply to tickets/emails about an order.

This is the most excited I've ever been about any purchase, ever - the wait's becoming really painful but I'm slugging it out till the very end. Already purchased all the games I've either been missing out on or chose not to play on a low graphic setting on my current DV6 with Radeon 6770m. Big jump from that to the 980m. Hell, I'm even excited about the screen which should be miles better than the 1366x768, 200:1 contrast ratio TN panel it currently has

Might do an unboxing video as I've not seen one of the bare/unbranded Clevo 650SG.

So... I assume there are a lot of people waiting on computers to ship. Back when XoticPC first listed the Sharp screen with the 980m it had a January 6th stock date. I was just curious if anyone has received an update now that the stock date has come and gone. Or if one of the wonderful XoticPC reps can chime in on Sharp availability and general Sager production schedule for those orders held up by screen availability. I noticed that it no longer has a stock date listed in the configuration, so I assume standard production scheduling is now going smooth.

Just trying to get by and patiently wait. Any news is good news at this point.

It's currently available and orders are proceeding normally. There won't be any way for us to post one statement that will inform everyone. If you were specifically concerned that your order isn't progressing it's best to contact us directly and get an update rather than through the forums. We're going to be able to help a lot more doing so.

I'm deciding between the 8651 and the 8652, which I'll be buying on Xotic PC. I'm hoping those of you who have one of these fine machines can help a prospective buyer out:

    Display:

The 8651 comes with a TN display stock, while the 8652 comes with an IPS display allegedly from LG.

    1. How is the TN display? Are the colors/angles noticeably bad?
    2. How is the IPS display? Does it suffer from blurring or bad response times?
    3. Is the IPS upgrade option on the 8651 the same display as the stock one on the 8652?

    Storage:

I like to have a medium SSD for the OS (256 GB currently) and a larger HDD for data (1 TB). The 8652 supports this configuration, but the 8651 does not. I've been told that the 8651 can be modded to accommodate this, however

    4. Is modding the 8651 to hold an HDD + SSD recommended, and if so, would I be modding the laptop itself or just the caddy?

    Cooling:

    5. Does one model have a better cooling system than the other?
    6. Does the 8652 capitalize on its 980m's power (vs 970m) by cooling it properly? Or is it throttled such that there isn't as much of a performance difference with the 8651?

    Cheers!

Hmm, also doesn't seem like it would work. Why would they make it go out the side of the SATA port and not to the back where the drive usually goes. I'm not sure which configuration it installs in but neither would work:

See my review here on the LCD: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...e-gtx-970m-htwingnut-s-review.html#components

The TN screen is not so great. The IPS is pretty good and nobody has reported any issues with gaming, and IPS screens are the same for both models.

You can fit two 7mm SSD or one 9.5mm SSD in the 8651. If you want to, you can remove the SSD from its housing and it should fit. You can't modify anything to get two hard drives to work on the laptop, because spacing is what it is. But you can get an M.2 SSD instead of a 7mm one that will work just fine and have your 1TB SSD in the SATA slot.

See my reviews of both machines for the answer to this:

Weird about the CPU throttling on the 8652. If that doesn't get resolved in the coming weeks I'll probably go with the 8651 with the $45 IPS display upgrade.

    Many thanks!

Good grief that is an expensive solution to a simple problem. If you are handy with a soldering iron, it's really easy to desolder the USB port on the board I'll link below. I just desoldered the port and power pins and moved them via wires to the space on top of 2.5" SSD.

That's what I meant in my original post where I said maybe I'll make a few more of these converted 'low-profile' boards for other NBR members that are interested. Certainly no need for a $70 adapter...especially since it appears Wingnut is correct in terms of orientation. You would need to use a small SATA power cable like I did anyway.

I placed an order for the P650SG from ProStar Saturday and it shipped today and is scheduled for delivery tomorrow! It would have gone out earlier but there was a billing issue on my end (bank froze my card for security reasons). I ended up going for the 1080p IPS Panel although I was tempted to get the 4K Sharp IGZO. It has been an amazing experience with ProStar so far, all of my calls were answered quickly by a friendly support team.

I haven't been this excited about a purchase since my Rift DK2 last year.

There are 7mm high hard drives out there. I know, I have the 1TB, 2-platter, 7mm high Hitachi Z5K1000 drive in my Lenovo Thinkpad x220 Tablet.

Just because a number of OEMs aren't offering them doesn't mean they don't exist.

The new crop of 2.5" hard drives are now using ...
    - 3-platters in 9.5mm high
    - 2-platters in 7mm high
    - 1-platter in 5mm high

    I also have the 2TB, 3-platter, 9.5mm Samsung/Seagate ST2000LM003 as well. ;)

I think the cpu temps here are just a result of one of the following things. The cooling system is the same so it really shouldn't be a issue

    1. Crappy paste job, we all know that can have amazing differences. Heck there are 20 page articles about paste and paste laying techniques
    2. Crappy CPU, there are allot of tests here and on techinferno about overclocked laptop cpu's and there have been huge temperature delta's between cpu's of the same type and between higher and lower tier version.
    3. One or more of the heat pipes are defect or badly made, heat pipes are not just a static piece of copper and a better filling of the refrigerant can have huge impact.

Oh right, it's just that I've seen pcspecialist offering 2x Plextor M6e drives in the P650SX. So Plextor M6e are M.2. SATA drives? I did not realise that; I thought they were PCIE x2.

Hello, I have basicly read this entire thread and every other thread on NBR in regards to the clevo P650SE, have decided to make the plunge and get one
Now here's my problem..... I'm looking to buy from a UK re-seller since I live in the UK. I have 3 options, PC specialist, mySN or Scan.

    I want the 970m, 8gb RAM with a 1tb hdd and a 250gb SSD.

Scan are cheapest, around £1150. BUT only sell the stock TN panel, how bad is the TN panel compared to the IPS screen?
PC specialist are cheap too, around £1250. and they do the matte IPS panel, with 2 year warranty
mySN, quite expensive, costs 100 quid more for same specs as PC Specialist (including IPS), but they also do a 4 year warranty deal for an extra £256, totalling around £1560.

I need some solid advice, is it worth going with mySN and paying for the extra warranty? (4 years parts labour & shipping) or Pc Specialist with IPS panel OR Scan who are the cheapest but only do the stock TN panel?

Bare in mind I am a student (comp sci) with a one-off budget (loan ftw) wanting this machine to last me ATLEAST the duration of my course (4 years)

Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong place, thanks guys.

Scan also have the Sharp 4K IGZO panel available, which is definitely an IPS panel - I bought my P651SG from them :)
EDIT: or not... I just checked myself and you're right - they've taken that option away from their configurator for whatever reason. Can only assume there are stock shortages. That's a darn shame.

Wait... so how can pcspecialist offer two M6e's in the P65xSx if it only has a single PCIE M.2. slot? It's there on their website configurator: PCSPECIALIST - Defiance 15, Gaming Defiance 15, Build Your Own Defiance 15, Buy Defiance 15

thats one thing we never really put to the actual test samot :) but the assumption is out there!

@willyi: the 4yr warranty from mysn is a steal, if u ask me. think about it: with both cpu and gpu as soldered components, if one of them fails during those 4 yrs ure planning to use the laptop, the whole motherboard has to be exchanged! so all it takes is one single warranty case and those extra costs for the extension are already back in ur pocket :)

this is also the main reason im going with mysn on my new rig (see sig), just that no other reseller/vendor has this kind of extended warranty option :)

There are two stores in Portugal that offer options for extending the warranty, including accidental damage and theft insurance.

Regarding the m. 2, I thought it was already tested. According to the Clevo spec sheet description it seems that only one m.2 drive is possible if it is a pcie one. Hummm, maybe we could ask some shops if they can test it, they have the hardware.

So if I was to purchase two 7mm drives (HDD & SSD), would this fit inside the laptop?

    HDD: http://www.amazon.com/HGST-Travelst...J22423/dp/B00B4QESVQ/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
    SSD: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-2-5-I...cs&ie=UTF8&qid=1420742224&sr=1-1&keywords=ssd

Or would keeping the stock 3.5 1TB HDD and adding a m.2 SSD be better?

    Thanks!

2x7mm would work on both models, keeping the 9.5mm and add the 7mm would only work with the SG

    Hey all,

Have the NP 8651 shortlisted as my work + mid-tier gaming PC.
Any developers out there using this to code? How does the keyboard stack up?

Also, is the battery swappable / replaceable? Is it possible to send it to Sager or some other shop to get it replaced? Couldn't find anything conclusive on this.

u can remove the battery by removing four internal screws that keep it installed. also u would be able to get a replacement at the reseller/vendor u got the laptop from. or basically any shop that offers clevo machines :)
