Anyone here have experiencing ordering laptops without any HDDs? I'm going to install a 1TB SSD in my P651SG from mySN and then install the OS myself. I figure everything I need to install the SSD will be included/ inside the laptop?

Besides that, it's hard waiting! I spent about two hours looking through reviews and the owner's thread for the MSI GS60. The 970M would be a downgrade (even though it's still a very capable GPU), but having such a slim laptop is so tempting! Especially seeing as it would get to me by Monday if I ordered it today.

But all the same, I think that having a Clevo is a real advantage. I love being able to repaste and clean my laptop without having to worry about warranty. I mean, you can literally just find an official manual telling you how to take your laptop model apart! I love that.

The GS60 has some problems too, like noise and bleeding panels, although overall it seems like a very good slim gaming unit. But I think I'll trade a nice slim chassis for 30% more GPU performance and better cooling :) The P651SG is already a lot slimmer than my current lappy in any case! :D

Wait, what? I thought December 9th was just the date they got the 980Ms? I mean, I hope you're right, but are you sure? December 9th seems to be the date all resellers are giving for P650SG/ P651SG builds to commence.

dell, lenovo etcs all provide hardware maintenance manuals for most of their models. the general trend with warranty nowadays is that you can mess around if there's no warranty sticker, unless you are msi which I just don't even know why they would bother sticking warranty stickers to scare people off when it's completely unnecessary

The 840 Pro 512GB I already owned and the 850 Pro 1TB I got for free from Amazon. Had nightmarish experience dealing with cloning OS drives with my former Gigabyte so decided to go all out on the Plextor M6e 512GB to avoid the need to do that again. Still expensive though, yeah!

I ordered from scan.co.uk. The ETA they gave me when I ordered was the 12th December. I hope that's still the case.

Delivery was very, very late so they refunded the original order and did not charge for the replacement order. I sent the original back when it did finally arrive a month later than it was supposed to. They never tried to claim money for the replacement order they sent me. So the end result was me getting a completely free Samsung 850 Pro 1TB B)

It is sad to know Clevo's design is not making use of the added height to the advantage of having both 9.5mm and 7mm together. Maybe they are using the same MB as of 8651, which maintains the same gap between the two SATA slots. Guess what? Not even their 17 inch models (8671/8672) allow both 9.5mm and 7mm to be added together. Come on Clevo!!!

    Question for you guys...

    I ordered np8652 with 1x8gb ram cas11 but purchased 2x8 sticks cas9 :)

would you leave the original stick in the system or take it out? Will it downgrade performance not being in dual channel and running at higher cas timings?

or will having 24gb be better?

In dual channel scenario, it is always good to have even number of sticks. Having odd number of sticks like 1 or 3 will make it run in single channel. Also, I wouldn't mix CAS 11 stick with 2 of the new CAS 9s you have got. Because the best performance will always be limited to slowest ram stick.

Not always in the case of 3. It depends on the CS lines and addressing, as well as what pages are being fetched or written. Interleaving can help too. There also can be many times where 4+4GiB in one channel and 8GiB in another can actually result in the same performance as a single 8GiB in each channel.

The biggest issue with going 2R unbuffered is that the clock is usually reduced, due to added noise.

Depends on the timing at what speed. There are many cases where they are actually the same or similar timing, because the CAS11 is at 1866 or even 2133, while the CAS9 is at 1600. The underlying latency of the DRAM cells are the ultimate factor when it comes to timing, as latency remains constant, regardless of clock.

Not true. As long as you have 2 sticks in opposite slots (1a+1b, or 1a+2b, etc) you will have dual channel. 3 sticks will run in dual channel as well. Just max dual channel RAM amount is limited to the smallest of opposing sticks. i.e. 4GB + 4GB + 8GB would only offer no more than 8GB in dual channel.

Speaking about ram speeds and CAS latencies... Would 1600 MHz CAS 9 rams (56.25 access time, I always forgot the unit) be slower than 2133 MHz CAS 11 rams (51.57 access time)?

I know it also depends on the D latency value, and of the intended usage of the laptop, but say in global behavior and gaming, would one notice the difference?

Depends on usage, largely burst writes v. random reads where latency factors in more heavily.

Also remember that whole numbers are usually not whole numbers, but often have fractions that are not listed. I.e., even the JEDEC timing numbers reported by most SPDs on DIMM would often equate to fractions, because the "frequency" is actually not the frequency, but actually an "equivalent."

Thanks for the advice, that's a shame. I ordered the Eurocom M5 Pro and have an SSD waiting, it comes with a 7mm 500gb 7200RPM HDD and I thought it was convenient, not knowing
that I could just have a 9.5mm HDD. The specs on their sites say otherwise but I am hearing you can do a 9.5mm + 7mm. Oh well, still feeling good enough about what I'm paying for.

Since the M5 Pro 970m/980m are both called M5 Pros regardless of 650SE/SG, is there another way Eurocom differentiates what chassis it is?
and how do you edit your signatures, can't seem to find it -_-

i dont think any reseller is gonna go for that, bitcoin is just too jumpy in its value :p good luck tho! ;)

edit: whoops, didnt see myth´s post, nice! :)

u can just check either the driver section of a clevo reseller / vendor or check clevo´s website itself to see what kinda hardware u have inside your laptop. you can also use tools like HWInfo to have more insight. then u can either check the component manufacturer´s sites for updated drivers and/or go to www.station-drivers.com, very recommended especially for hard to find / not so common stuff :)

nice, ill add those to the OP shortly :)

umm...ok, where do u get that info?

one more time for those of you who apparently havent read the OP here yet:

    P65xSE = 970M = 2x7mm or 1x9.5mm 2.5" storage

    P65xSG = 980M = 2x7mm or 1x7mm + 1x9.5mm 2.5" storage

    /rantmode on

this is how it is!!! so please stop repeating / complaining that the added space in the SG is not used for 9.5 + 7 mm storage :p

its just strange how many questions here are already answered in the OP, so please please read it before asking! ;)

    /rantmode off

@Kerune: eurocom just renames the clevo models to fit into their own branding / naming scheme. as such, it does not change the actual hardware, namely different motherboard of the 980M / SG with the accompanying thicker chassis. so once u choose an M5 Pro with the 980M ull automatically get the SG with the different backplate.

as for signature editing: go to forum - userCP - left side under "my settings" - edit signature

not sure tho if one is required to have a specific amount of posts before being able to have a custom sig....?

XOTIC PC | Sager NP8652 (Clevo P650SG) - 15.6" Gaming Notebook - Under tech specs. It mainly confuses those who couldn't
come across the info that the P650SG isn't literally exactly like the P650SE minus the 980m. To be fair, I was told by a reseller
through PM that they are identical lol.

Jaybee, much appreciated. I figured that I was getting the P650SG, I was just wondering how Eurocom differenciates it like Sager calling it NP8652 vs 51. Looking forward to
    being a first time gaming laptop/clevo owner! Got my order in on an M5 Pro with a 980m w/ 128gb m.Sata + 500GB HDD + 8GB RAM. I think I'll be mind blown
that a laptop can be so powerful as a first impression. And yes, I can't see a signature section so it must be the minimum posts.
